Goal.com casts a studious eye over the performers at Camp Nou as a calamitous error from Victor Valdes left the tie on a knife-edge

Víctor Valdés Flop of the Match

Hung out to dry by his defence for the opener, but was always convincing when striding off his line to meet crosses. But it all fell apart for him five minutes from the end, as a shambolic piece of control gifted Di Maria the second Madrid goal.

  • Adriano
    192
    162
    3.00

    Adriano

Shrugged a little too easily off the ball by first Benzema and then Ronaldo, and did not really make much of an impact on either end of the field, but was solid enough in his duties.

  • Daniel Alves
    249
    134
    3.50

    Daniel Alves

Looked a little stifled in the first half, but came alive after the break as the match opened up. Almost scored with a sneaky effort after stealing in from the right flank.

  • Piqué
    225
    152
    2.50

    Piqué

Good job defensively reading the game, though he did lack a tad for pace towards the end of the game and let a few plays pass him by.

  • Andrés Iniesta Luján

    4.50

Andrés Iniesta Luján Top of the Match

The only consistent threat in the first half for the home side, as his nimble feet and silky passing kept Madrid on the back foot. He did not let up after the break, and a sublime manoeuvre teed up Xavi for a goal.

  • Javier Mascherano
    307
    134
    4.00

    Javier Mascherano

Not shy to put his body on the line to block Madrid’s route to goal, and came up trumps at the other end, setting up Pedro’s goal with a perfectly weighted ball over the top.

  • Xavi
    318
    127
    3.50

    Xavi

Found it a bit difficult to manufacture space in the first-half, and was restricted to a few pot-shots on goal. His passing expertise was more on show in the second half though, as he exploited the increased gaps in midfield well. Scored Barcelona’s third with a tidy finish from a wonderful Iniesta feed.

  • Busquets
    265
    168
    3.50

    Busquets

The Barcelona midfielder was given a rough ride by many members of the Madrid team, as they did not hesitate to send him down to the turf with some meaty challenges. His toil was not wasted though, as he forced more than one Madrid player into the book.

  • Alexis Sánchez
    195
    223
    2.50

    Alexis Sánchez

His pace was an intermittent threat, though his propensity to fall in the box under minimal contact in search for a penalty was an eyesore.

  • Messi
    378
    233
    3.50

    Messi

Spurned the best two chances of the first half, failing to find the target from good positions. Was able to enjoy more freedom on the ball after the break, and buried the penalty that put Barca up for good.

  • Pedro
    278
    133
    3.50

    Pedro

Tried to get involved in the attack often, but often found his path to goal blocked by multiple white shirts. He took his goal well though, sprinting away from Coentrao and finding the bottom corner, despite suspicions of offside.

Substitutions

    Late cameo.

    Cesc Fàbregas

Came on for the last few minutes and had a few touches of the ball as Barca held on for victory.

  • Tello
    195
    131
    2.50

    Tello

His speed caused one or two nervy moments off the bench.

  • Iker Casillas
    301
    128
    4.00

    Iker Casillas

Came up with a few solid saves to keep his side in the game, but will be disappointed with conceding three goals.

  • Raúl Albiol
    139
    214
    2.50

    Raúl Albiol

Put in a willing effort at the back, but his clumsiness betrayed his enthusiasm as he was guilty of a few ungainly fouls. Deservedly booked in the second half for a challenge on Busquets.

  • Arbeloa
    142
    219
    2.00

    Arbeloa

Certainly put his work in on the right flank, but tiredness caused one or two lapses in the second half.

  • Fabio Coentrao
    204
    184
    3.00

    Fabio Coentrao

Had one mistake in the first half that was not punished, but recovered well to solidify the left flank, and even provided a rare outlet once or twice on the break. However, he was at fault for the Barca equaliser, allowing Pedro to escape him in behind.

  • Sergio Ramos
    212
    182
    3.00

    Sergio Ramos

Gave a decent effort defensively in the first half, but as is always the case with Ramos, his recklessness is only a moment away. A clumsy, mistimed challenge on Iniesta led to a blatant penalty which handed Barcelona the advantage, and he looked nervy thereafter.

  • Mesut Özil
    188
    239
    2.00

    Mesut Özil

Games such as this, where defence becomes a priority, never suit Ozil well. His first half was one to forget, but as Madrid’s tactics changed in the second period, so, ever so slightly, did his influence. His pinpoint corner assisted Ronaldo’s goal.

  • Sami Khedira
    169
    180
    3.00

    Sami Khedira

Dished out his fair share of physical retribution in midfield, but was given the slip more than once by the elusive Iniesta. As ever though, he toiled diligently and was not lacking for fight.

  • Xabi Alonso
    231
    141
    3.50

    Xabi Alonso

Did not appear scared to put his foot in, and came up with a few crunching tackles to attempt to stop Barcelona advancing through the middle. An early yellow card saw him walk a tightrope for much of the game. Was able to launch a few attacks from deep as the second half wore on.

  • C. Ronaldo
    367
    298
    3.50

    C. Ronaldo

Starved of the ball in the first half, but showcased his increasing trend of scoring against Barcelona, with a bullet header that broke the deadlock and livened up a tepid match.

  • José Callejón
    154
    213
    2.50

    José Callejón

Saw precious little of the ball, and was forced to pull back and defend in his own half for most of the match. Pulled off just after an hour.

  • Karim Benzema
    159
    210
    3.00

    Karim Benzema

Made a few clever runs that were not picked up by his teammates, but that was not surprising given their isolated numbers in attack. Never had a chance on goal, and was replaced after an hour.

Substitutions

  • Marcelo
    172
    159
    3.00

    Marcelo

    Given a late run out

  • Ángel Di María
    321
    107
    4.00

    Ángel Di María

Was quick to pounce on Valdes’ moment of weakness, and secured a potentially priceless goal for his side heading into the second leg.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín
    211
    128
    3.00

    Gonzalo Higuaín

Came on for the last half-hour and looked lively at times in his appearance.
