Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Nurnberg: Kuba double sends BVB second

The Polish winger was in fine form as Jurgen Klopp's men eased past the Bavarian side, though Bayer Leverkusen only need a draw to regain the position behind the league leaders

Borussia Dortmund were in complete control as they coasted to a 3-0 victory over Nurnberg at the Signal Iduna Park.

The reigning Bundesliga champions secured all three points with a competent display that was decided by a first-half double from Jakub 'Kuba' Blaszczykowski. Jurgen Klopp's men could have added many more but it was not until the 88th minute that Robert Lewandowski netted his side's third.

Dortmund's superiority shone through in the opening stages and they had a golden opportunity to take an early lead with just five minutes on the clock.

Kuba countered with a fantastic burst of pace and having entered the area he cut the ball back for Lewandowski, but the striker failed to steer the ball into the gaping goal from 10 yards out.

Despite controlling the game, BVB suffered a scare as Tomas Pekhart was allowed a free header in the 15th minute. Fortunately for the hosts, his effort was straight at Roman Weidenfeller and the keeper made another great save at his near post from Markus Feulner's follow up.

But der Club were unable to build upon that chance as two minutes later BVB were awarded a rather soft penalty as Timo Gebhart felled Lukasz Piszczek in the area. Kuba was handed responsibility and he buried the spot-kick to the keeper's right in cool fashion.

Nurnberg have not won a game after going behind since March 2011 and any hopes of bucking that trend were abolished as Kuba swept home from a low Mario Gotze cross, doubling his side's advantage in the 21st minute.

The chances continued to come but, after springing the offside trap, Piszczek was unable to lift the ball over Schafer. Feulner then suffered a similar fate at the other end soon after, though his effort was nowhere near beating Weidenfeller.

Shortly before the break Lewandowski finally got the ball in the net but was dismayed when he turned around to see the assistant referee with his flag raised.

Although they remained in control in the second half, it was not until the 60th minute that BVB truly threatened again. Once more, Lewandowski spearheaded the attack but instead off finishing from the Pole's pass, Gotze hit the ball back to his team-mate who was unable to beat Schafer.

The Dortmund midfield had been sending pass after pass over the top of the Nurnberg defence and after 67 minutes a ball from Sebastian Kehl put Marco Reus in on goal. He tried to guide an angled lob over to the far corner but his intelligent effort dropped narrowly wide of the target.

Lewandowski's persistence finally paid off in the 88th minute as a long ball from the back was cushioned into his path by Reus and the striker rifled an emphatic volley into the roof of the net.

Victory sends Dortmund temporarily into second position, nine points behind Bayern Munich who face Stuttgart on Sunday.
