Valenciennes - Paris Saint-Germain Preview: Ancelotti's men aiming to continue resurgence

Valenciennes - Paris Saint-Germain Preview: Ancelotti's men aiming to continue resurgence

The visitors appear to have turned a corner, but will be wary of Daniel Sanchez's tricky side who boast a formidable home record

Nery, Isimat-Mirin, Benjamin, Bong
Ducourtioux, Saez
Dossevi, Pujol, Danic
Le Tallec

Jallet, Sakho, Thiago Silva, Maxwell
Pastore, Verratti, Motta
Menez, Lavezzi

Valenciennes coach Daniel Sanchez will be without defender Gil for the visit of Paris Saint-Germain due to injury, though otherwise, the team should not differ greatly from the side that drew 1-1 with Nancy on Saturday.

Anthony Le Tallec could be preferred to Vincent Aboubakar up front, with David Ducourtioux likely to be given the nod ahead of Remi Gomis in midfield, as Loris Nery maintains his place on the right flank.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti will be boosted by the return to form of his players, as well as the scoring return of injury absentees Thiago Motta and Kevin Gameiro on Saturday against Evian.

Blaise Matuidi is suspended, with Ancelotti set to continue his faith in Javier Pastore, who shined in the 4-0 win over Pascal Dupraz's men.

  • Valenciennes sit in fifth place in Ligue 1 with 26 points from 16 games so far this season.
  • Daniel Sanchez's men have the second-best home record in Ligue 1, with five wins and three defeats.
  • This fixture last season ended in a manic 4-3 victory for PSG, who were 2-0 down after just 11 minutes in a match which threatened to derail their title hopes.
  • Victory for Valenciennes will put them ahead of Les Parisiens in the Ligue 1 table.
  • Paris Saint-Germain sit second in Ligue 1, though level with Olympique de Marseille.
  • Carlo Ancelotti's men are the joint-second top scorers in the division, level with Olympique Lyonnais, and one behind Valenciennes.
  • Defeat would put Paris Saint-Germain further behind Lyon, with the two sides set to meet in the next week.

Players to watch

G. Danic

The midfielder is one of the most under-rated in Ligue 1, constantly coming to the rescue of his side. Danic, who leads the division's assists charts is a fine a player, able to intelligently compose play and instigate attacks. His wingplay and width is also one of his main assets, and will surely give the likes of Gregory van der Wiel or Christophe Jallet a headache. Definite man to watch,

Thiago Motta

Position: Midfielder

The former Inter and Barcelona midfielder made a scoring return on Saturday, and it really is evident how much PSG have missed him. With his steel in midfield and great passing ability, he has given more freedom to those ahead of him, namely Javier Pastore and Ezequiel Lavezzi. Will want his good form to continue and make up for lost time.

Editor's Prediction

Daniel Sanchez's side are a tough team to beat at home, as PSG found out last season, but their richly assembled side has surely enough quality to edge this one out. It will be close, but the Parisians will get the three points.
