Player Ratings: Paris Saint-Germain 1-2 Stade Rennais

An incredible match at Parc des Princes saw the visitors snatch three points with only nine men, and Goal.com was on hand to judge the performers

By Robin Bairner

    Salvatore Sirigu

Could do nothing at all about Alessandrini’s opening goal, but his positioning will be questioned as he allowed Feret’s free kick to beat him.

  • Thiago Silva

    Thiago Silva

Neither of Rennes' goals could have been prevented by the central defenders, and the Brazilian gave another strong account of himself when required.

  • Zoumana Camara

Zoumana Camara Flop of the Match

With Jallet injured and Gregory van der Wiel banned, he was in the team in an unfamiliar position and was given the responsibility of captaining the side. Caught a little out of position in the lead up to Alessandrini’s goal, but it was a minor error emphatically punished. Could not be faulted for his effort, but he did look a fish out of water at times.

    Alex

Provided a big threat in the opposition box and was unlucky not to get himself on the scoresheet with a number of headed attempts. Did not put a significant foot wrong defensively.

  • Maxwell
    13
    10
    2.50

    Maxwell

Continues to give his side a very reliable presence on the left of the rearguard, where he is a solid and steady player. Another well-measured performance from the Brazilian full-back.

  • Jérémy Menez

    14

    Jérémy Menez

Although his final pass was missing at times, the movement and pace of the attacker posed Rennes major problems. Got in behind the defence constantly and drew the foul from Costil that saw the goalkeeper dismissed. Went off in the first half with a slight injury.

  • Nenê
    21
    7
    3.50

    Nenê

Fractured a cheekbone last month and back in the side for the first time, albeit wearing a Zoro-style mask. Marked his return with a goal, finishing well after a Pastore pass after earlier hitting the post. Struck the frame of the goal in the second period too and was very lively.

  • Blaise Matuidi
    7
    17
    2.50

    Blaise Matuidi

After giving away possession too cheaply for Montpellier’s goal in the 1-1 draw last weekend, the midfielder made an identical error before conceding the free kick from which Feret scored Rennes’ second.

  • Clément Chantôme
    2
    19
    2.50

    Clément Chantôme

Picked up an early booking for a rather rash challenge but played a decent first half before being replaced at the interval.

  • Javier Pastore
    16
    14
    2.50

    Javier Pastore

Not guaranteed a spot in the starting XI, the Argentine gave an encouraging performance in the centre of the field, with the highlight of his evening being a neat pass through to Nene for the Brazilian to score. Was regularly involved.

  • Ezequiel Lavezzi
    17
    9
    3.00

    Ezequiel Lavezzi

An enthusiastic performance down the right from the former Napoli attacker, who might have been amongst the goals had the service to him been a little more adroit.

Substitutions

  • Adrien Rabiot

    Adrien Rabiot

Brought on at the interval to add more physical presence to the midfield. The teenager gave a good account of himself once more.

  • Guillaume Hoarau
    2
    16
    2.50

    Guillaume Hoarau

Introduced in the first half to replace the injured Menez, he posed questions with his height, but Kana-Biyik got the better of their individual duel. When he had a chance to pull the trigger six yards out, he misfired.

  • Kevin Gameiro

    13

    Kevin Gameiro

Brought on as PSG really went for it as Camara was the player taken off. Was very lively and was denied only by some fine goalkeeping.

  • Benoit Costil
    1
    7
    2.00

    Benoit Costil

His evening lasted little more than 25 minutes as he was caught out of his box when he fouled Menez and earned a red card as a result.

  • Kevin Theophile Catherine

    4.00

    Kevin Theophile Catherine

Shrugged off an injury problems to play in this match but he was constantly caught out of position early on, which allowed PSG several breaks down his flank and resulted in the red card to Costil. Was terrific thereafter.

  • Chris Mavinga

    Chris Mavinga

Came through the PSG youth system and gave a decent performance at his former home. At times he struggled to contain Lavezzi, but he had the measure of the attacker in the main.

  • Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik
    11

    4.00

    Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik

Seemed to be in the right place at the right time to snub out countless PSG attacks, the Cameroon defender was the centrepiece of the Rennes rearguard throughout and their best player over the course of the game.

  • John Boye
    12

    3.50

    John Boye

The Ghana international is a prospect but he remains raw, and it was his lack of position that invited Nene through to score the levelling goal.

  • Julien Féret
    8
    1
    3.50

    Julien Féret

Helped to construct the break that saw Rennes go into the lead and then scored the second himself with a free kick bent superbly round the wall. Withdrawn as his side became more defensive.

  • Jean II Makoun
    4
    5
    2.50

    Jean II Makoun

Guilty of dallying too long on the ball on occasion but gave an energetic performance for his side. Foolishly booked for dissent after Costil’s red card and saw his second yellow for a silly lunge on Maxwell early in the second half. Should have known better, frankly.

  • Yann M'Vila
    6
    7
    2.50

    Yann M'Vila

Returned to the starting XI for the first time last week after around a month out and looked busy in front of the rearguard on this occasion. Was not quite on his game, though, and was replaced at half time.

  • Romain Alessandrini
    14
    1
    4.00

    Romain Alessandrini

Scored a brilliant goal last weekend and looked like a player high in confidence as he offered a shooting threat from distance. With quarter of an hour gone, he cracked home a fine volley from 20 yards out. Withdrawn for the more defensive Danze after Makoun was dismissed.

  • Jonathan Pitroipa
    8
    1
    3.00

    Jonathan Pitroipa

An offensive catalyst for Rennes on so many occasions, the attacker was effectively stifled by the events of the afternoon, but his industry allowed him to win the free kick from which Feret scored his side’s second. Once his side were down to nine, he offered an invaluable outlet.

  • Mevlut Erding
    2
    4
    2.50

    Mevlut Erding

Has been in red-hot form in front of goal lately, yet it was his profligacy in possession that allowed PSG to start the move that got them back on terms. His evening ended prematurely as he was sacrificed in order for his side to bring on a goalkeeper as Costil was dismissed.

Substitutions

  • Cheick Tidiane N'Diaye

Cheick Tidiane N'Diaye Top of the Match

Made just his eighth Ligue 1 appearance as he came on with less than 30 minutes played. Did not always looked completely convincing in his actions, but made a number of important saves.

  • Romain Danze
    5
    2
    3.00

    Romain Danze

Came on to shore things up as soon as Rennes went down to nine. Gave his team energy and was willing to offer support to lone forward Pitroipa.

  • Vincent Pajot
    6
    1
    3.00

    Vincent Pajot

Introduced at the break in place of M’Vila. Worked hard in front of the rearguard, but his task to quell PSG was a virtually impossible one in the circumstances and he gave his task a great go.
