    Asmir Begovic

Has been touted as a potential Manchester United signing and the Bosnian goalkeeper had plenty to do to impress his suitors, but was unable to keep the visitors at bay and saw his goal breached in only the fourth minute by Carrick. Did well but could not keep out Van Persie's penalty.

  • Geoff Cameron

    Geoff Cameron

Handled the threat of Kagawa well and didn’t let the Japanese star pass him on many occasions, but did struggle when Evra came to support his team-mate. Replaced by Jerome in the 71st minute.

The German struggled against United’s front two and gave both Van Persie and Chicharito far too much room to control balls and turn towards goal. He threatened in the opposition penalty area and should have done better with a free header in the first half, but he couldn’t direct his effort on goal.

    Ryan Shawcross

The Potters captain didn’t have one of his strongest games as the relentless visitors’ attack gave him plenty to deal with. He was never close enough to the United front two and gave away some needless free kicks.

  • Andy Wilkinson

The full-back returned to the starting line-up in place of Marc Wilson and did well against Valencia. Didn’t give the winger space to get the ball under control and run at him, which limited United’s options down the right, but mistimed a challenge on Van Persie to gift the visitors a penalty and condemn his side to defeat.

  • Ryan Shotton

Ryan Shotton Flop of the Match

Ran his heart out for his team, but it’s not just effort that Stoke need and his delivery to Jones was poor and easy for United’s defence to clear. His long throw was again a weapon but one that the hosts could not use to their advantage.

  • Glenn Whelan

    Glenn Whelan

The man charged with conducting the Stoke midfield returned, but he looked off the pace and gave Carrick and Rooney free reign in the centre of the pitch to control the game.

  • Steven N'Zonzi

    Steven N'Zonzi

The protector of the back four had a tough task on his hands with Rooney playing in central midfield and he gave the United man too much room, which he was lucky not to be punished regularly for. Looked to play simple passes when he could, and tried to give Adam something useful to work with.

  • Charlie Adam

    Charlie Adam

The home fans have been desperate to see the Scot start in the Premier League but he hardly lit up the game as the hosts struggled to get the ball on the floor too often. He did provide good support to Kenwyne Jones but found it hard to get his shots away to test De Gea.

  • Kenwyne Jones

    Kenwyne Jones

The big striker led the line well but in truth it was a thankless task as the hosts struggled to create him anything of note in the opening half. Things improved slightly after the break when he had some good crosses to attack but the United defence handled them well.

  • Jonathan Walters
    3
    17
    2.50

    Jonathan Walters

Stoke’s top scorer was out on the left hand side and that meant he had a quiet and frustrating afternoon with little to work with. Battled hard with Phil Jones but struggled to find the kind of crosses Kenwyne Jones needed to work with.

    Peter Crouch

A late replacement for Kenwyne Jones but he failed to have an impact.

  • Cameron Jerome

    Cameron Jerome

He replaced Cameron in the 71st minute to give his side more attacking threat.

  • David de Gea

    David de Gea

The Spaniard saw his run of six games without conceding a goal broken against Manchester City but he began a new run today. Commanded his area well and kept his side moving with quick and precise distribution.

  • Patrice Evra

    12

    Patrice Evra

A solid performance from the full-back, who didn’t give Shotton any chance to run at him and was very quick to make a challenge and generally won the ball back for his side well.

  • Phil Jones
    143
    15

    Phil Jones

Battled well against Walters and restricted the opportunities for crosses to be launched into his penalty area. Showed good anticipation to intercept passes from the Stoke midfield and gave good support to Valencia.

  • Rio Ferdinand
    134
    14

    Rio Ferdinand

Used all of his experience to keep the threat of Kenwyne Jones and Adam at bay, not giving either man chance to bring loose balls down or fire shots at De Gea. His partnership with Vidic is very impressive and together they organised the United team on a fairly easy afternoon.

  • Nemanja Vidic
    162
    11
    3.00

    Nemanja Vidic

Had a real battle with Kenwyne Jones and came out on top with a solid performance. Didn’t always win aerial duals but picked off the loose balls well and was grateful to Ferdinand for dealing with anything he couldn’t.

  • Antonio Valencia
    78
    81
    3.00

    Antonio Valencia

Did his best to get at Wilkinson down the right and had some success, but his final ball lacked precision, meaning Van Persie and Chicharito did not test Begovic as much as their dominance suggested they might have.

  • Michael Carrick
    199
    19

Michael Carrick Top of the Match

This was possibly one of the easiest games of the season for the midfielder, who strolled through the match in complete control. Always available for a pass and his vision meant he could keep the ball moving and keep his side in possession. Grabbed the game’s opening goal in the fourth minute as he poked a shot past Begovic.

  • Wayne Rooney
    212
    17
    3.50

    Wayne Rooney

Deployed in central midfield alongside Carrick and the lack of pressure from the Stoke players meant it looked like he’d been playing there his entire career. Looked particularly dangerous breaking from the halfway line and stung the hands of Begovic with a long range drive in the first half.

  • Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
    147
    28
    3.00

    Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez

A willing runner for the visitors as they looked to stretch the Stoke defence, and it worked well as space opened for Rooney to take advantage of. Sights of goal were not forthcoming, but his work for the team will have pleased his manager. Replaced by Welbeck in the 78th minute.

  • Robin van Persie
    196
    26
    3.50

    Robin van Persie

The goal scoring drought is finally over as the Dutchman grabbed United's second goal from the penalty spot after being brought down by Wilkinson. Throughout the game he held the ball up well for his side and linked up nicely with Rooney and Carrick in the middle of the park, and could have had more goals but for Begovic.

  • Shinji Kagawa

    Shinji Kagawa

Drifted in and out of the game on the left without ever really imposing himself on the game, his control and vision were second to none but he was unable to find the key passes to unlock the Stoke defence.

Substitutions

  • Danny Welbeck

    Danny Welbeck

He replaced Hernandez after 78 minutes and continued the good work done by the Mexican.
