Danny Rose is ineligible to play for Sunderland against his parent club, so will return to first-team action in the New Year.

Wes Brown (knee) and Lee Cattermole (knee) remain major injury concerns, with both expected to miss a number of games with knee injuries.

John O'Shea missed the Black Cats' victory over Manchester City with illness, but should be available against Spurs.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto's return to full fitness continues, but he may not start this game as his recovery begins to gather momentum.

Mousa Dembele was replaced during Spurs' win over Aston Villa with a knock and is doubtful for this game.

Clint Dempsey missed Tottenham’s 0-0 draw with Stoke and the clash against Villa with a groin problem, and continues to be a doubt.

Adam Johnson

Games Goals YC RC

After his goalscoring exploits against former club Manchester City, Johnson will be confident of further success against high-flying Tottenham. The midfielder has scored three goals in the league so far this season, and will be a crucial attacking outlet for his side.
Gareth Bale
Gareth Bale
Position: Midfielder
Squad Number: 3
Games Goals YC RC
32 20 5 0
Bale will hope to keep up the form that saw him score a hat-trick in Tottenham's 4-0 demolition of Aston Villa on Boxing Day. He presents an incredible threat with the ball at his feet, and Sunderland's defenders will need to be at the top of their game to stop him running riot.
Prediction
On their recent good form, and with home advantage, Sunderland should provide a stern test for Spurs as the holiday fixtures come thick and fast.

However, with Bale on song and their attackers firing on all cylinders, the away side should be confident of success at the Stadium of Light.
