Player Ratings: Swansea 1-1 Manchester United

Michu's first-half strike cancelled out Patrice Evra's opener but it was the Swans' wide men who produced the best displays, while Wayne Rooney struggled to make an impact

By Tom McKeown

  • Michel Vorm

    3.00

    Michel Vorm

Made a long-awaited comeback after 10 games out with injury and looked rusty early on after making hard work of Rooney's 20-yard strike but redeemed himself with a fine save to deny Young before tipping Carrick's header onto the bar.

  • Chico
    47
    17
    3.00

    Chico

Regularly in the right position to cut out passes and crosses and worked hard to stifle the threat of Van Persie, regularly belting forward some long defensive headers. Picked up a booking for a late clip on Rooney.

  • Ashley Williams
    59
    53
    3.00

    Ashley Williams

Has been on excellent form recently and showed good anticipation to block out Rooney early on before making another vital block from Young's shot in the second half.

  • Dwight Tiendalli
    30
    15
    3.00

    Dwight Tiendalli

Had his work cut out with the ever-present threat of Ashley Young but coped well and pushed forward regularly, causing Evra some real problems, though the United full-back got behind him more than once at the other end.

  • Ben Davies
    22
    20
    2.50

    Ben Davies

Kept Valencia quiet for most of the afternoon and got forward well to support Routledge but not involved as much as Tiendalli was on the other flank.

  • Leon Britton
    13
    28
    2.50

    Leon Britton

Regularly dropped deep to spread the ball around but was caught out for Evra's goal, failing to clear off the line when he was the man on the far post. Replaced by Ki on the hour mark.

  • Michu
    113
    15
    3.00

    Michu

Out of the game for large periods and wasted his first opening after a fine ball by Agustien but he showed true striking instincts to follow up De Guzman's shot and tap home for the equaliser.

  • Nathan Dyer
    32
    21
    3.00

    Nathan Dyer

Proved to be a threatening outlet for the hosts, linking up well with Tiendalli to throw in some dangerous crosses, as well as often drifting inside to add an extra man in the centre of midfield.

  • Wayne Routledge
    59
    20
    3.50

Wayne Routledge Top of the Match

Registered the first shot on target with a weak shot at De Gea before releasing De Guzman in the build-up to Michu's strike. The winger worked hard, swapping flanks and nearly gave the hosts the lead with a near-post effort.

  • Jonathan De Guzmán
    51
    15
    3.50

    Jonathan De Guzmán

A very assured, confident display from the midfielder, always involved in Swansea's pushes forward. Forced a parry from De Gea which led to Michu's equaliser, before wasting an opportunity to set up a team-mate after doing well to keep the ball in play.

  • Kemy Agustien
    37
    22
    2.50

    Kemy Agustien

Clearly selected for his defensive-mindedness but nearly released Michu early on with a superb ball. Let Swansea's attacking players steal the show but worked hard and had a fine game in the middle.

Substitutions

  • Sung-Yong Ki
    40
    23
    2.50

    Sung-Yong Ki

Came on for Britton with half an hour to go and made a couple of decent challenges in midfield but did little else as United had the majority of the possession.

  • Itay Shechter
    15
    21
    2.50

    Itay Shechter

Came on for Agustien with a few minutes left and nearly had a chance to push forward in stoppage time but had no real time to get properly involved.

  • Luke Moore
    13
    25
    2.50

    Luke Moore

Replaced De Guzman with 20 minutes remaining but failed to register any sort of impact on the game as United monopolised possession.

  • David de Gea
    83
    62
    2.50

    David de Gea

Only had to deal with a couple of tame shots in the first period but will be disappointed to have parried straight into the path of Michu for the equaliser.

  • Patrice Evra
    80
    47
    3.00

    Patrice Evra

Made his first real impact on the game with a fine header to give United the lead but had a troubled afternoon dealing with Dyer. Routledge and Tiendalli. Pushed forward in the second half and regularly got behind the full-back to deliver into the danger area.

  • Phil Jones
    25
    76
    2.50

    Phil Jones

Made some good runs forward down United's right-hand side but did not make the most of his crossing opportunities. Picked up a yellow card for a poor challenge on Davies.

  • Jonny Evans
    29
    69
    2.50

    Jonny Evans

Like Vidic, was exposed regularly at the back as United's defence looked shaky in the first half, but things tightened up as the game went on. Was not involved as much in the second half as United spent most of the period camped in Swansea's final third.

  • Nemanja Vidic
    95
    44
    2.50

    Nemanja Vidic

The Serbia international made his first start since September and his lack of match play did not help the visitors as they lost their lead. United's defence looked shaky and Swansea often found gaps but Sir Alex's half-time talk clearly had an impact as the defence was much improved and Vidic looked much more like his old self.

  • Antonio Valencia
    24
    112
    2.00

    Antonio Valencia

It was a very quiet afternoon from the winger, with the Ecuador international wasting his first real chance to deliver after being released by Carrick, and was eventually replaced by Chicharito after producing nothing of significance.

  • Michael Carrick
    97
    38
    3.00

    Michael Carrick

Carrick has been rejuvenated this season and looked on excellent form once again. Regularly tidied things up in midfield and made several key passes, including a superb ball to release Young early on. Almost scored himself with a header against the bar.

  • Ashley Young
    39
    73
    2.50

    Ashley Young

Tested Vorm early on with a decent low strike but, as the game went on, he drifted out of the action and failed to produce decent balls into the box from the wing.

  • Tom Cleverley
    67
    50
    2.50

    Tom Cleverley

Moved the ball around quickly and confidently and was always looking for a forward option when on the ball but often left Carrick exposed in the heart of United's midfield.

  • Wayne Rooney
    64
    159
    2.00

Wayne Rooney Flop of the Match

Not a good afternoon for him. Regularly sloppy in possession and struggled to find his rhythm at the Liberty Stadium. Fired at least two efforts straight at the goalkeeper and generally looked frustrated, summing up his afternoon with a yellow card for a foul on Tiendalli before finally being replaced by Giggs.

  • Robin van Persie
    127
    54
    3.00

    Robin van Persie

United's top scorer showed brilliant touch and close control throughout the match but had fewer have as many looks at goal than he would have wanted. Hit the bar with a superb volley in the second half.

Substitutions

  • Ryan Giggs
    88
    33
    2.50

    Ryan Giggs

Came on for Rooney with just over 10 minutes left and constantly found a good pass, using his experience and vision to cause problems for Swansea at the back.

  • Paul Scholes
    58
    46
    2.50

    Paul Scholes

Replace Cleverley late on and got straight into the heart of the action, spreading the ball around as United pushed for a winner.

  • Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
    53
    63
    2.50

    Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez

Replaced Valencia on the hour and nearly had an excellent chance to grab the winner but failed to control the ball quickly enough and the chance went begging.
