  • As the match finishes 1-1 Norwich will be the more satisfied of the two teams, having weathered Southampton's expansive attacking play for 90 minutes with a competent defensive display. Aside from a spell shortly after the start of the second half where the Canaries were on top, the Saints showed more prowess going forward and frequently looked threatening through first-half goalscorer Rickie Lambert's intelligent leading of the line, Jason Puncheon's pace, and the trickery of Adam Lallana and Gaston Ramirez. Nigel Adkins' side demonstrated their new-found stability in defence against the effective counter-attacking of Chris Hughton's side, but were not threatened for much of the game and only conceded due to a goalkeeping error. Each side leaves with their confidence intact, Southampton now three and Norwich seven league matches unbeaten, but Paulo Gazzaniga will rue his error on the cusp of half-time that robbed his side of two points.
  • Joe Doyle at St Mary's Stadium: "Southampton were dominant at home, but just couldn't find a winner that they deserved. An impressive performance from Luke Shaw was tempered by a late injury to the left-back, while Norwich will be quite happy to return to Carrow Road with a point."

  • 65'
Hoolahan appeals for a foul but is unsuccessful after a challenge from Schneiderlin. The Ireland international is playing higher up alongside Holt as Norwich adopt a more confident stance that appears very effective.
  • 64'
Snodgrass beats Yoshida in the box and wins a corner after he is eventually stopped. Grant Holt loses his marker at the back post and Gazzaniga is forced to make a good save, but on the second corner Bradley Johnson badly miscues a free header.
  • 63'
Norwich are on top at the moment and Snodgrass takes a free kick from the right flank. When Southampton clear, the ball comes straight back to them via a Garrido long-ball, and Adkins can be seen telling his side to calm down as Norwich look impressive.
  • 62'
Bradley Johnson picks out the overlapping Garrido in acres of space on the left flank. The Spaniard whips in a cross with a good shape but the Saints clear it successfully.
  • 61'

  • 55'
Southampton exchange passes across the centre of the pitch but Morgan Schneiderlin loses control of the ball for a Norwich throw. The Canaries have held a higher line since the start of the second half and the Saints have had less time on the ball as a result.
  • 53'

  • 49'
Mark Bunn hits a goal kick wide to the left flank but Southampton win the ball straight back again after a loose first touch, and Puncheon drifts into the centre of the pitch and wins a foul outside the edge of the box from Bradley Johnson.
  • 47'
Norwich started the second half with a spell of pressing keeping the ball in the Saints' half, but Clyne got to the right byeline after combining with Puncheon and put in a dangerous low cross across the box.
  • 46'
Southampton get the second half underway.
  • Southampton have been the more enterprising of the two sides going forward, with attacking midfielder Adam Lallana impressive in a side that frequently build moves through quick passing exchanges. Norwich however limited their opportunities in attack and were unfortunate to concede after a poachers finish from Rickie Lambert followed a series of deflections from a free kick on the left flank. The Canaries' stroke of good fortune on the edge of half-time rewarded the more attacking approach Chris Hughton's side espoused after going behind, after they had put together some good spells of possession, and the two on-form sides will continue their battle in what should be an intriguing second half.
  • Joe Doyle at the St Mary's Stadium: "Southampton were coasting through most of that first half, but a poor mistakes from Gazzaniga in both the positioning and size of the wall, as well as letting the ball slip underneath him, have cost Nigel Adkins' side."
  • 45' + 1'
The referee blows the half-time whistle.
  • 45'
    Goal Robert Snodgrass
Robert Snodgrass notes Paulo Gazzaniga's position far to the right of his goal, and opts for power as he strikes a curling left-footed shot as hard as possible around the left edge of the wall towards the bottom-right corner of the goal. The ball bounces just in front of the Argentine, who gets a firm hand to it in what should be a routine save, but he fumbles the ball and it finds its way into the back of the net.
  • 44'
    Yellow Card Nathaniel Clyne
  • 44'
The corner is taken short and Snodgrass wins a free kick after luring Nathaniel Clyne into a rash challenge on the edge of the box. The right back receives a yellow card.
  • 43'
Norwich enjoy a good spell of possession with Tettey growing increasingly influential, and the Norwegian wins a corner after attempting to run inside the right edge of the box.
  • 41'
Ramirez arrows in a powerful free kick from the right flank with his left foot. It bounces narrowly wide of the far post but Mark Bunn could do nothing as it seemed any player in the box could manage to get a touch on it.
  • 40'
Ramirez displays excellent technique to receive the ball in Norwich half and lay the ball off to Puncheon, who is fouled by Garrido.
  • 39'
Steven Whittaker disappointingly overhits a cross from the right flank after many teammates had surged into the box after Tettey won the ball high up the pitch.
  • 38'
Grant Holt does well to keep the ball for the Canaries after a disappointing free kick from the right flank.
  • 37'
Lallana shows impressive poise to hang onto the ball on the right edge of the area and create space for Jason Puncheon, who darts to the by-line and floats in an arching cross that evades his teammates and flies narrowly off the pitch.
  • 35'
The Canaries will consider themselves unlucky at the deflection but Southampton will rightly feel rewarded for their enterprise going forward.
  • 32'
    Goal Rickie Lambert
Goal Rickie Lambert! The Saints win a free kick on the left flank and Adam Lallana strikes a long ball towards the far post with his right foot. A Norwich defender gets his head on it but Southampton benefit as the ball next strikes another Canaries defender only to fall into the path of Lambert, who finishes confidently.
  • 31'
Luke Shaw wins a free kick on the left flank after a tackle from Sondgrass.
  • 28'
Southampton are having the better spells of possession, but Norwich are staying solid at the back and have not allowed the Saints much by way of clear opportunities.
  • 26'
When Holt's heavy touch results in the ball going out for a throw-in, the home fans develop a disparaging chant comparing him to their opponents' Lambert.
  • 24'
Adam Lallana watches a Rickie Lambert cross as it loops over the Canaries defence from the right wing and volleys first-time over the bar.
  • 22'
Left-back Luke Shaw impressively dispossesses Alex Tettey as he embarrassed centre-back Maya Yoshida with a dribble into the Southampton box.
  • 20'
And another over-hit delivery from Pilkington, though Bennett at the far post could have perhaps kept it in and put it back across the box.
  • 19'
Clyne is penalised for a late, lunging tackle on the free-running Holt down the left, risking a yellow card.
  • 18'
Signs that Norwich are growing into the game as they get a spell of possession in their opponent's half. Sadly, it goes from the ridiculous to the even more ridiculous with their crossing, Pilkington hitting in a well-overhit effort.
  • 16'
Norwich put together a neat set of triangles on the left flank, with Hoolahan and Pilkington heavily involved. Pilkington wins a free kick for his trouble and stands menacingly over it with left-back Javier Garrido, but the delivery is poor and fails to beat the wall. The Canaries do however continue the move, which ends when the Saints repel a right-wing corner.
  • 13'
Norwich retain their shape at the back with two banks of four and have been in position to repel Southampton's attempts at through-balls into the channels after quick attacks throughout the last few minutes. The Saints are now attempting a more patient style of build-up.
  • 10'
Southampton are firmly on the front foot after 10 minutes, and Norwich have 10 men behind the ball while the Saints exchange possession on the edge of the Canaries' penalty area.
  • 9'
Joe Doyle at St Mary's: "First sight at goal, Jason Puncheon floats a ball over the top for Rickie Lambert. The striker nods it back across goal but it's just behind both Gaston Ramirez and Adam Lallana. Puncheon then follows it up a minute laster with a shot blocked. Saints on top early on."
  • 8'
Snodgrass is exasperated after right back Steven Whittaker attempts an impossibly long pass across the pitch rather than a shorter option.
  • 6'
Rickie Lambert receives the ball with his back to goal and attempts to find Adam Lallana running in behind with an overhead kick, but the midfielder is outmuscled by Sebastien Bassong.
  • 5'
Southampton look to consolidate after a confident beginning, exchanging passes along the back line before moving forward and winning a corner off Alexandre Tettey. Ramirez takes the kick and Mark Bunn punches clear twice.
  • 4'
Wes Hoolahan makes an interception as Gaston Ramirez attempts to pass back to Jack Cork. Bradley Johnson wins a corner after nearly finding Anthony Pilkington with a ball down the left wing. The kick is taken short and ends with a Robert Snodgrass shot which is saved.
  • 2'
Southampton make a confident beginning in building an attack down the left flank, but 17-year-old left-back Luke Shaw over-hits his cross bringing it to an end.
  • 1'
The referee gets the game underway at the St Mary's Stadium, as Norwich win a throw-in.
  • Chris Hughton brings in Mark Bunn at goalkeeper after injury to John Ruddy, but his side are otherwise unchanged as the Canaries look to extend their six-match unbeaten run.
  • Nigel Adkins' side name an unchanged line up in their search for a third consecutive victory. The Saints have scored in 11 of their last 13 league games but also conceded the most, with 30.
  • Norwich: Bunn, Whittaker, Ryan Bennett, Bassong, Garrido, Snodgrass, Johnson, Tettey, Pilkington, Hoolahan, Holt. Subs: Rudd, Martin, Howson, Jackson, Morison, Elliott Bennett, Barnett.
