Player Ratings: Norwich 2-5 Liverpool

Luis Suarez scored his second hat-trick in two seasons at Carrow Road and delivered a remarkable performance to lead the Reds to their first Premier League victory of the season

    John Ruddy

Little he could do to stop Suarez's brilliance. Did make a good save from a Gerrard header, but his efforts were all in vain.

  • Javier Garrido

    2.50

    Javier Garrido

Struggled to deal with the combination of players popping up on the Liverpool right, as the likes of Gerrard, Suso and Wisdom passed triangles around him.

  • Michael Turner

    2.50

    Michael Turner

Troubled by the pace of the Liverpool attack but he was coping credibly until Suarez robbed him of possession to score his second goal of the afternoon. In the second half, he was hung out to dry due to the amount of space they had to break into.

  • Leon Barnett

Leon Barnett Flop of the Match

Struggled from the start, with his distribution often badly wayward. Should have been penalised for fouling Suarez in the penalty area but got away with it. An afternoon to forget.

  • Russell Martin

    Russell Martin

Reliable as ever at right-back. He was not overwhelmed by the pace and power offered by the very attacking Glen Johnson and kept a lid on Sterling too until the youngsters left him for dead to initiate the move for Liverpool's third. His powerful shot resulted in Morison's goal, though.

  • Bradley Johnson

    Bradley Johnson

Had difficulty getting his foot on the ball amid Liverpool's heavy pressing and his set-pieces and crosses from deep were often very disappointing.

  • Robert Snodgrass

    Robert Snodgrass

Has been a shining light for Norwich in recent weeks but less involved here and somehow missed from no more than two yards out in the second half.

  • Jonny Howson
    10
    20
    3.00

    Jonny Howson

The most influential player in the Norwich midfield and carried the ball into dangerous positions on occasion. Kept trying despite the scoreline and was rewarded when he picked out Holt for Norwich's second.

  • Andrew Surman

    Andrew Surman

Had a day to forget. When the team plays badly, he struggles and he eventually started taking some criticism from the home supporters for a poor display.

  • Simeon Jackson
    17

    3.50

    Simeon Jackson

Bright when the ball did reach him in attack. Volleyed one difficult chance narrowly over the bar and his pace and intelligent running did cause problems. Unforunate to be subbed at half-time.

  • Steve Morison
    17
    20
    3.50

    Steve Morison

Fared reasonably well in attack, receiving his chance to start following the slow start of Holt to the new campaign. Clever hold-up play created good chances for both Jackson and Surman and he scored his first of the season in the second period from close range.

    Wesley Hoolahan

Called for by the Norwich supporters but the game was over before he entered it and only got worse afterwards. Got between the lines and showcased some neat passing but the contest was over.

  • Alexander Tettey

    Alexander Tettey

Introduced late on to make his Premier League debut.

  • Grant Holt

    Grant Holt

Busier than he had been in recent weeks, but still looked laboured and slow off the mark at times. Appears as if he is at the end of a gruelling season rather than the start of a fresh one, but found enough energy to finish past Reina after Howson had set him free.

  • José Reina Paez
    107

    3.00

    José Reina Paez

Looked back to his best, making a string of timely saves in the first half despite Liverpool's general domination. The Spaniard moved across goal quickly to deny Jackson and later did well to push away a deflected shot, although the flag was up for offside. But then allowed an error to creep in when he parried Martin's shot straight to Morison.

  • Glen Johnson
    125
    11
    3.00

    Glen Johnson

Attacked aggressively down the left but did not neglect his defensive duties. Struggled to get much change out of Martin when he went forward, however.

  • Daniel Agger
    148
    10
    3.00

    Daniel Agger

His lovely through ball set Suarez through on goal in the first half but the striker shot wide. His comfort in possession is a real asset and helped Liverpool control the ball but Norwich were not without chances.

  • Martin Skrtel
    103
    37
    2.50

    Martin Skrtel

Troubled on occasion, along with Agger, by the physicality of Morison and Holt but generally kept his foot on the ball and helped Liverpool exert some control from the back. They could do better in dealing with crosses, however, and he should not have allowed Howson's pass to reach Holt for Norwich's second.

  • Andre Wisdom
    162
    9
    3.50

    Andre Wisdom

Coped well on his first start at right-back. Limited in an attacking sense but took care of his defensive work first. Was alert enough to make an important tackle on Holt from a quick set-piece which prevented what would have been a good chance. Combined well with Suso given the pair's inexperience.

  • Nuri Sahin
    266
    4
    4.00

    Nuri Sahin

Quickly adapting to life in the Premier League. He played as the most advanced of Liverpool's central midfielders and Suarez benefited greatly from the support. Grabbed a deserved goal in the second half.

  • Steven Gerrard
    178

    3.50

    Steven Gerrard

A couple of moments of individual brilliance, such as one run on to a wonderful Suarez pass that ended in his header being well-saved by Ruddy.

  • Joe Allen

    Joe Allen

A joy to watch. Simply does not give the ball away, even in compromising positions. The foundation of every good passing move Liverpool manage.

  • Suso
    164
    14
    3.00

    Suso

Started well but faded as the match wore on. Good in front of his marker, playing some dangerous through passes, but struggled to get behind Garrido and offer much penetration.

  • Raheem Sterling
    173
    14
    3.50

    Raheem Sterling

Quiet in the first half, but arguably the most dangerous player on the pitch in the second. Started the moves which resulted in Sahin and Gerrard's goals by leaving Martin and Garrido for dead.

  • Luis Suárez
    283
    23

Luis Suárez Top of the Match

Sublime. His second hat-trick in as many seasons at Carrow Road but his contribution was not limited to goals. The pass that created a chance that Gerrard headed at the goalkeeper, for instance, was exquisite. Abuse was hurled in his direction all afternoon and he was denied a penalty but responded in the perfect way.

    Oussama Assaidi
