Player Ratings: Team GB 1-1 Senegal

Craig Bellamy had given Stuart Pearce's side the lead before half-time although Moussa Konate's late second-half equaliser spoiled the party for the Olympic hosts

    Jack Butland

Was rarely tested in the opening half as the GB defence stood defiant and blocked everything. Was let off after clearing the ball straight to Mane, who shot wide, but was powerless to stop Konate's late effort being chipped over him.

  • Neil Taylor

    Neil Taylor

Playing on the right-hand side of defence rather than his natural left, the Swansea man had a good game and kept Pape Souare fairly quiet. Having to constantly cut inside onto his left foot meant Great Britain were sometimes very narrow but he generally kept possession well.

  • Ryan Bertrand

    Ryan Bertrand

A solid performance at left-back from the Chelsea youngster, he kept Konate at bay well with some important tackles when it looked like the winger was going to threaten the GB goal. He tried to support attacks down the wing and linked up nicely with Rose on a couple of occasions.

  • Danny Rose

    Danny Rose

Although not normally a winger, Rose worked hard down the left side and got into some very promising positions, his delivery let him down at times but he gave good balance to GB attacks.

  • Steven Caulker

    Steven Caulker

He was a steadying influence for Richards and held the defensive line well for Stuart Pearce’s side. His reading of the game is impressive for a player of his age and he made some excellent last minute blocks to protect Butland in the GB goal.

  • Micah Richards

    Micah Richards

He is still learning how to be a centre-back and at times that showed as he was caught out of position, but as the game went on he grew into the role alongside Caulker. He was strong in the air and used his pace well to deny Sadio Mane and Ibrahima Balde.

  • Tom Cleverley

    Tom Cleverley

The Manchester United midfielder was neat and tidy in the middle of the pitch without ever really imposing himself on the game. He made some dangerous runs but the opportunity never really materialised, or his late runs into the penalty area were not spotted by his team-mates.

  • Joe Allen

    Joe Allen

He tried to make GB tick like he does for Swansea and he was successful for the majority of the game. He sat close to the back four and collected the ball off them as much as possible, and then used his accurate passing and good vision to find a team-mate. Unfortunately his night ended early as he landed awkwardly following a challenge and was replaced by Ramsey.

  • Ryan Giggs

    Ryan Giggs

The captain had a steady game in the centre of midfield, he allowed the younger players to do a lot of his running but when he got himself on the ball he made sure every pass counted. His deliveries from set pieces were excellent and it was a dangerous free kick that led to the opening goal of the game.

  • Daniel Sturridge

    Daniel Sturridge

He struggled as the lone striker with Ba and Papa Gueye staying very close to him, that didn’t stop him making good runs and creating space for his team-mates, though, but clear chances for him were few and far between. He fluffed his one sight of goal in the opening half as Mane raced out to close him down. Replaced at half-time by Marvin Sordell.

  • Craig Bellamy

Craig Bellamy Top of the Match

The Welshman caused problems throughout down the right-hand side and wrote his name into the history books with the first goal of London 2012 for the unified team, latching onto a loose header from Abdoulaye Ba in 20th minute goal and firing into the far corner from 12 yards.

Substitutions

  • Jack Cork

    Jack Cork

Replaced Bellamy in the 79th minute as the Welshman began to tire, he added energy in the middle of the pitch as Giggs moved wider.

  • Aaron Ramsey

    3.00

    Aaron Ramsey

The Arsenal man came on as a second-half substitute and set-up a late chance squandered by Sordell. Team GB lacked creativity in midfield before his arrival and he must surely start the must-win game against UAE as a result.

  • Marvin Sordell

    8
    3.00

    Marvin Sordell

He replaced Sturridge at half time and held the ball up well, using his height and strength to battle well with Ba and Gueye. However, like Sturridge he rarely had sight of goal, spending the majority of it with his back to Ousmane Mane trying to link up attacks. Hit the bar in stoppage time as GB sought a winner.

  • Ousmane Mané

    Ousmane Mané

Unble to stop Bellamy's strike but otherwise looked solid and reliable. Showed good reactions to close down Sturridge in the first half and hurry the striker into a poor finish.

  • Saliou Ciss

    Saliou Ciss

Playing against Craig Bellamy is never easy and the full-back had a tough time. The Welshman was quick to close him down and eager to race past him whenever he could, meaning the Tromso defender was forced to play long balls a lot of the time which were easy for GB to cut out.

  • Abdoulaye Ba

    3.50

    Abdoulaye Ba

The tall and commanding centre-back had a good game as he first kept Sturridge and then Sordell quiet with the help of Gueye.

  • Papa Gueye

    3.50

    Papa Gueye

He worked well with Ba at the centre of the Senegal defence, and was strong in the air and good when he had the ball at his feet.

  • P. Souaré

    P. Souaré

You couldn’t miss him with his blond mohawk and the Lille man was full of running down the left. He did everything he could to get past Taylor whenever he could but the Swansea defender was resolute in defence. He lived something of a charmed life when it came to his tackling though, was booked for one wild challenge and was lucky to receive a second yellow on a couple of occasions. Replaced by Yero in the 88th minute.

  • Zargo Touré

    2
    2.50

    Zargo Touré

Had a tough time against Rose and struggled to keep up with the winger at times, that didn’t stop him trying though but occasionally it did lead to him giving free kicks away in dangerous positions.

  • Sadio Mané

    2
    3.00

    Sadio Mané

His luminous orange boots helped him stand out from the crowd and his quick feet did the same but unfortunately his final ball tended to lack precision. He should have scored in the 26th minute when Butland fired the ball straight at him but his chip was wide of goal. He continued his search for a goal in the second half but his radar was always slightly off and Butland was never tested.

  • Mohamed Diame

    Mohamed Diame

The West Ham midfielder had a solid game in the centre of pitch, helping his younger team mates through what could have been a tough evening. His calm persona and hunger to get on the ball gave Senegal more drive in the second half as he began to dominate the midfield battle.

  • Idrissa Gueye

Idrissa Gueye Flop of the Match

Started the game in lively fashion and was unafraid to put himself into a challenge when required, sadly for him that attitude took it’s toll when he was forced off injured just before half time having clashed in the middle of the pitch. He was replaced by Kouyate.

  • Moussa Konaté

    Moussa Konaté

He tried hard to get into the game with plenty of direct running and off the ball movement to worry Bertrand, however it was the Chelsea man who came out on top in this battle. Konate moved to a more central position in the second half and it paid off as he latched onto a low right-wing cross and chipped the ball over the advancing Butland to equalise.

  • Ibrahima

    Ibrahima

A tall striker who provided the perfect foil for Mane in attack, he gave Richards plenty to deal with but rarely tested Butland. His first effort on goal was woefully wide and although his accuracy improved he was not able to get his name on the scoresheet. Replaced by Magaye Gueye in the 65th minute.

Substitutions

  • Cheikhou Kouyaté

    Cheikhou Kouyaté

Came on for Idrissa Gueye just before half time and slotted into midfield alongside Diame well, he was solid in the challenge and calm in possession but never really took control of the game.

  • Magaye Gueye

    Magaye Gueye

Replaced Balde in the 65th minute and gave Senegal more movement upfront but chances were few and far between for him.
