Uganda and Senegal ended their second 2014 World Cup qualifying game with a 1-1 draw in Kampala on Saturday, with Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse putting the Teranga Lions in the lead in the first half and Bunamwaya midfielder Godfrey Walusimbi equalising via a penalty minutes before full time.

The Cranes knew they were hosting a star-studded team and thus wasted no time in getting into the groove, but Senegal were able to hold off the early assaults before seizing control of the session by the half hour mark, with team captain Papiss Cisse opening the scoring after being beautifully set up by FC Copenhagen striker Dame N’Doye.

The visitors continued their domination until the half time break, and could have doubled the lead had Sadio Mane not bungled a clear goal chance face to face with the Ugandan goalkeeper.

The Cranes got back on their feet near end of second half, stepping up the pressure and forcing the Lions to stay in their back half, but most of their efforts went always aimless until the 85th minute when the Algerian referee Mohamed Benouza ruled for a penalty in favour of the hosts following a rough tackle from a Senegalese defender.

Godfrey Walusimbi successfully transformed the kick to level for his side, but their last minute push for a winner yielded nothing more.

The Senegal coach said that he was happy with the result and that it was exactly his objective for the match, which keeps the west Africans top of Group J with four points, ahead of Sunday’s clash between Liberia and Angola.
