Zambia host Ghana this weekend – their new rivals in African football – with a very heavy heart. The Chipolopolo (Copper Bullets) deflated the egos and pride of their fans with that 2-0 loss to Sudan, who they beat in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, during their opening qualifying game last weekend.
Coach Herve Renard is not a happy man. He has been the subject of media banter with football authorities after going down in Khartoum, blaming the FA for their loss. The Frenchman has to put the past behind him and focus on a brand new Black Stars side, who are determined to make a local coach proud. Renard has hinted that he will make two changes from the side which started against Sudan by handing starts to Mbola and Felix Kantongo against the four-time African champions.
Conversely, Coach Kwesi Appiah is bringing on defender Isaac Vorsah, who missed the game against Lesotho due to suspension. Ghana have no injury worries and the return of first choice goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey gives them a major boost. The clash has been described as a tough game because the Black Stars will hope to avenge that painful semi-final defeat to the southern Africans at the Afcon.
|DID YOU KNOW?|
Ghana have never lost a game – friendly or competitive – under the guidance of Appiah since he took over as head coach in April.
The Black Stars scored seven goals in their two warm-up games before meeting Lesotho and ended up replicating the same result against the Crocodiles in Kumasi.
Ghana have made two consecutive appearances at the World Cup finals since 2006.
Lost luggage on the return trip after their opening game against Sudan prevented Zambia from training on Monday and that among others angered their coach to register his protest in the open.
The Chipolopolo game against the Black Stars is being used to unveil the newly built Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in the mining town of Ndola.
Zambia are the reigning African champions, but are ranked 43rd on the Fifa ranking table - 18 places away from Ghana's 25th spot.
