Los Colchoneros won their seventh consecutive Europa League game with a strong performance against a lacklustre Turkish side who struggled for creativity
Adrian stunned the visitors with a first-half goal which was much against the run of play. Los Colchoneros grew as the game continued and added another two late goals through Radamel Falcao and Eduardo Salvio.
Besiktas enjoyed a good start to the match and managed to force Thibaut Courtois into a save after just six minutes. Ismail Koybasi was freed down the left by Simao and he whipped a low cross in. Hugo Almeida used his body to tee the shot up for Simao with his chest, but the Portuguese fired his effort straight at Courtois.
Manuel Fernandes was driving the midfield while Diego Godin and Miranda were allowing Hugo Almeida far too much space to bring down long balls. Diego Simone’s men were struggling to get a foothold in the game and Veli Kavlak’s long range effort brought another save from Courtois, albeit a comfortable one.
With Besiktas struggling to create and convert chances Los Colchoneros began to string a few passes together and took the lead with their first real chance.
Juanfran clipped a delightful diagonal ball into the box which Arda Turan brought down. His first touch lost the shooting opportunity but he kept his composure and slipped in Adrian behind him, who fired low past Cenk Gonen.
The goal was somewhat against the run of play and it damaged the momentum of the hosts. Atletico began to see more of the ball and Besiktas continued to find it difficult to forge goal scoring opportunities as they repeatedly opted for the long ball rather than keeping it on the floor.
Adrian fired over from the top of the box in 55th minute and two minutes later Atletico almost added another after a swift counterattack; Arda Turan drilled the ball in from the right but Gonen got down to smother it.
The game was sauntering to an Atletico win and Adrian almost bagged his second in the 79th minute as he cut onto his right but saw Gonen get down at his near post and turn the ball behind.
The Spaniards then secured their victory when Salvio’s ball into the box was hoofed into the air amateurishly by Egemen Korkmaz. Gonen allowed himself to be beaten to the high ball by Falcao, who headed into the net.
There was time for another for the visitors as Salvio latched onto Falcao's ball and stormed past Korkmaz to fire into the net at the death. A supporter showed his displeasure by invading the pitch but was escorted off shortly after.
Diego Simeone's men saw out the remainder of the game to book their place in the last eight with another impressive win, while Besiktas' recent weeks go from bad to worse and they will hope that improved league performances can salvage something from their season.
