Holders Olympique de Marseille extended their winning run in the Coupe de la Ligue to 10 games as they overwhelmed Caen 3-0 in their quarter-final at Stade Michel d'Ornano on Tuesday night.
First half goals from Mathieu Valbuena and Loic Remy put the visitors on their way, and a further effort from Valbuena sealed the tie, as OM entered the semi-final for the third time in three years.
Didier Deschamps made a few changes to the side that impressively dismantled Red Star in the Coupe de France at the weekend. Gennaro Bracigliano was handed a rare start, as Morgan Amalfitano and Loic Remy replaced Jordan & Andre Ayew, who departed for the Africa Cup of Nations.
The hosts, defeated by OM in the league last month, were on the front foot early on. Livio Nabab got the better of Djimi Traore, who was fielded in an unusual defensive midfield role, but the striker's fizzing effort hit the side netting inside six minutes.
However, it would be the visitors who would take the lead just two minutes later. Jeremy Morel was hauled down by Joseph Yanick Mbone, and it was left for Mathieu Valbuena to curl a delightful free-kick into the top corner, with goalkeeper Thomas Bosmel unable to keep out the effort.
Despite Caen building up some possession, they found themselves 2-0 down after 20 minutes. A superb defence-splitting pass from Bruno Cheyrou found Morgan Amalfitano in space. A deft touch of the ball deceived Bosmel and it was left to Tottenham target Remy to easily slide the ball into an empty net.
Franck Dumas' men failed to seize opportunities to halve the deficit, with Fayçal Fajr spurning a good chance after being put through by Nabab. Les Malherbes were afforded another chance in the shape of Romain Hamouma, who was to be thwarted by a last-ditch tackle.
Lucho Gonzalez, another OM man to have been tipped to quit the Stade Velodrome, should've made it three before half time. A simple ball in by Valbuena found the Argentine, who directed an effort agonisingly wide of Bosmel's crossbar as the visitors ended the first period in a commanding position.
L'OM upped the ante after the interval, as the hosts imploded. Firstly, a simple exchange between Valbuena and Amalfitano saw the latter evade the challenge of Alexandre Raineau, though Remy was unlucky not put the ball into the back of the net.
A well worked set-piece situation saw the impressive Valbuena stroke a low effort past Bosmel and effectively seal the tie seven minutes after the break. Neither side could add to the scoresheet in a meek second half, though les Malherbes struck the post through Fajr as Marseille marched on.
The semi-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue take place on either 31 January or 1 February. Didier Deschamps' charges welcome champions Lille to the Velodrome on Sunday as Ligue 1 resumes after the winter break.
