Euro 2012 Player Ratings: Ukraine 2-1 Sweden

Andriy Shevchenko was the undoubted hero as his pair of headers saw the host nation come from behind to beat Erik Hamren's side

By Kris Voakes in Kiev

  • Andriy Pyatov

    Andriy Pyatov

Didn’t deal with an Ibrahimovic shot across his body particularly convincingly, and got lucky when his punch came back off a Sweden player. Then spilled a Rosenberg shot but got away with it.

  • Yevhen Selin

    Yevhen Selin

Made an excellent block as Rosenberg shot towards goal at the start of the second half, and locked solid for long spells at left back, largely quelling the threat of Larsson.

  • Yevhen Khacheridi

    Yevhen Khacheridi

Got a heavy knock in the opening stages, but was able to run it off. Had the fans’ hearts in their mouths when he played a short backpass which Pyatov just about dealt with.

  • Taras Mykhalyk
    25

    3.00

    Taras Mykhalyk

Allowed Ibrahimovic to get in front of him and turn home the opening goal, but it was a rare error as he regularly got the better of Rosenberg.

  • Anatoliy Tymoshchuk

    Anatoliy Tymoshchuk

A very tidy display in the centre of midfield, teeing up both wide men with regularity. Really proved to be the heartbeat of the side as he continued to prove elusive to the Sweden midfielders in the second half.

  • Oleh Husyev

    Oleh Husyev

Got forward well when allowed to do so, with Yarmolenko pulling inside to allow him to attack the space left by Olsson. Played the clever ball which opened the chance for Yarmolenko to set up the equaliser.

  • Serhiy Nazarenko
    32

    3.00

    Serhiy Nazarenko

His wasteful first-half free-kick was easily held by Isaksson, but he was largely an effective workhorse in the middle as the home side bossed the game for longer spells than anyone had imagined would happen.

  • Yevhen Konoplyanka
    80

    3.00

    Yevhen Konoplyanka

Hit an effort just wide of the far post after cutting inside and not quite adding enough curl on the shot. Always dangerous though, and his corner was headed home by Shevchenko for the second goal.

  • Andriy Shevchenko

Andriy Shevchenko Top of the Match

Missed a gilt-edged chance when he dragged a shot across the face of goal from Yarmolenko’s pass. Grabbed the immediate equaliser when he rose superbly to beat Mellberg and bury a header past Isaksson. Sent Ukraine into raptures with an excellent near-post run to head home a second from a corner.

  • Andriy Voronin
    93
    6
    3.50

    Andriy Voronin

Made an excellent run in behind Granqvist but couldn’t quite reach the high bouncing ball, then unleashed a swerving shot that Isaksson just about palmed away. Turned Granqvist inside out more than once to boot.

  • Andriy Yarmolenko
    73
    4
    3.00

    Andriy Yarmolenko

Broke away well down the right in the first half, but ran into trouble. Then teed up Shevchenko for a good chance as he proved a vital part of Ukraine’s attacking armoury. Eventually chalked up an assist when Shevchenko equalised.

Substitutions

  • Ruslan Rotan

    Ruslan Rotan

Came on for Voronin as Oleg Blokhin looked to replace weary legs with fresh ones.

    2.50

    Artem Milevsky

Replaced the hero of the night for the latter stages and did a good job of seeing the game out by holding possession well.

  • Marko Devic

    Marko Devic

Brought on for Konoplyanka in injury time.

  • Andreas Isaksson
    14
    23
    2.50

    Andreas Isaksson

Struggled with the flight of a Voronin speculator, but got it away from danger. Later did well to block Yarmolenko’s shot after Shevchenko had broken through. Could do little about either goal as his defence couldn't handle Sheva.

  • M. Lustig
    8
    47
    2.00

    M. Lustig

Looked solid enough until Konoplyanka cut inside a little more, then got turned too easily by Shevchenko and was bailed out by Mellberg.

  • Olof Mellberg
    11
    36
    2.00

    Olof Mellberg

Made an excellent block after Shevchenko had beaten Lustig and was looking to shoot. Later penalised when going in with an overzealous challenge on Voronin, and couldn't live with Shevchenko's desire as Ukraine equalised.

  • Andreas Granqvist
    8
    27
    2.00

    Andreas Granqvist

Almost got caught out by a ball over the top as Voronin came in behind him, but then blocked Yarmolenko’s shot superbly. Looked suspect whenever he was turned by tricky or pace.

  • Martin Olsson
    11
    31
    2.00

    Martin Olsson

Regularly caught out of position as Yarmolenko wandered infield to open space for Shevchenko, Voronin and the advancing Gusev.

  • Rasmus Elm
    16
    23
    2.50

    Rasmus Elm

Had little say in the run of play during the first half as Ukraine dominated across the middle, with his passing accuracy low and his yards covered high due to the running he was left to do. Got in behind at 2-1, but couldn’t turn his shot home.

  • Sebastian Larsson
    27
    22
    2.50

    Sebastian Larsson

Sent an excellent ball over for Ibrahimovic, which should arguably have resulted in a goal. Also looked to get into good positions high up, but Sweden had little of the ball at times and he was replaced by Wilhelmsson.

  • Kim Källström
    20
    22
    2.50

    Kim Källström

Booked in the opening stages for a rash foul on Konoplyanka, and looked busy thereafter. Got forward well to supply the killer pass in to Ibrahimovic for the opener, but couldn't regain any midfield advantage as Sweden chased the game.

  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic
    295
    35
    3.50

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Sent in a shot for the far post which Pyatov struggled with, but then should have buried a header which came back off the post. He made amends soon after the interval though, getting in front of Mikhailk to put Sweden ahead. His belting effort had Pyatov in trouble as his side searched for an equaliser.

  • Ola Toivonen
    13
    73
    2.00

Ola Toivonen Flop of the Match

Did a lot of running but little convincing from the left wing as Sweden found themselves chasing the ball for long spells. Eventually replaced by Svensson after Ukraine took the lead.

  • Markus Rosenberg
    12
    36
    2.00

    Markus Rosenberg

Hit a low drive straight at Pyatov when he could have asked more of the keeper, and was left bickering with Ibrahimovic at the break as they failed to get atuned to one another. Rarely appeared to be a goal threat and was replaced by Elmander for the last 20 minutes.

Substitutions

  • Anders Svensson
    21
    13

    Anders Svensson

Replaced Toivonen with Sweden trailing, but could do little to alter the flow of the game.

  • Christian Wilhelmsson
    47
    10
    2.50

    Christian Wilhelmsson

Came on for Larsson as Erik Hamren looked to chase the game in the final quarter.

  • Johan Elmander
    13
    29
    2.00

    Johan Elmander

Came off the bench despite worries over his foot injury as Sweden looked for a vital leveller, and almost teed up an Ibra goal. Should have bagged one himself in the 90th minute, but somehow struck well over the bar.
