Player Ratings: Inter 2-1 Genoa

Goal.com assesses the performances of everyone involved in the Coppa Italia last-16 clash at San Siro, a game in which the hosts had to do very little to progress to the quarters

    Luca Castellazzi

A virtual spectator during the first half, he was called into action six minutes into the second half when Pratto was put through and held on well to the striker’s low drive. Will have been desperately disappointed to see his cleansheet taken away from him right at the death with a goal that he had no chance of stopping from such close range.

  • Maicon

    Maicon Top of the Match

Inter's star performer, Maicon, after a couple of poor early crosses, opened the scoring with the most sublime outside-of-the-foot strike. Made several characteristically marauding runs down the right flank before playing a crucial role in Inter's second with his measured chip infield to Poli.

  • Iván Ramiro Córdoba

    Iván Ramiro Córdoba

Genoa saw plenty of possession in front of the Inter back four but Cordoba marshalled the defence well and only once looked ruffled, when he was bundled over - illegally - by Pratto.

  • Andrea Ranocchia

    Andrea Ranocchia

Was handed a start with both Samuel and Lucio rested and took his opportunity reasonably well, dealing competently with everything which came his way. No major errors - a major plus - and also showed a willingness to step out of defence at times.

  • Javier Zanetti

    Javier Zanetti

Nowhere near as awe-inspiring as he was against Milan at the weekend, but the veteran Argentine proved as reliable as ever. Stood up well to the threat posed by the lively Birsa - even if he did afford the Genoa No.10 a tad too much space in which to cross on occasion.

  • Marco Faraoni

    Marco Faraoni

Had a couple of decent surges down the right during the first half but he got progressively worse as the game went on. Knocked off the ball at one point, he also miscued horribly when presented with a decent shooting chance before. His confidence was undoubtedly affected because at one point during the second half he dallied horribly over the ball while in a good attacking position.

  • Esteban Cambiasso

    Esteban Cambiasso

A bit of a mixed bag from the Argentine. Broke the play up well and also produced some fine cross-field balls. However, he put his side in danger with some lax play in possession and some misplaced passing.

  • Andrea Poli

    Andrea Poli

The on-loan Sampdoria midfielder can be happy with his night's work. Showed plenty of energy and aggression in the middle of the park, as well as a willingness to get forward. Took his goal wonderfully well after playing a neat one-two with Obi.

  • Joel Obi

    Joel Obi

Given a rare start and rewarded the show of faith in him with an encouraging display down the left-hand side. Picked out Sneijder a couple of times with some clever passes before playing a key role in the second goal, controlling Poli's pass brilliantly before flicking it over Granqvist's head and back into his team-mate's path.

  • Wesley Sneijder

    Wesley Sneijder

Looked horribly rusty, it has to be said. The Dutchman repeatedly gave the ball away during the first half and also took the wrong option on several occasions. However, did show his class with a wonderful nutmeg on Samprisi during the second period before curling wide. Poor performance but will be all the better for the 80 minutes he played.

  • Luc Castaignos

    Luc Castaignos

Was a game runner throughout the game but never really got a sniff of goal. Brought others into the game well but was isolated for a lot of the time. Was twice denied by Lupatelli when it appeared he might get in on goal.

    Yuto Nagatomo

Thrown on for the last 15 minutes and put himself about without doing anything worthy of note.

    Ricardo Álvarez

Was only given 10 minutes at the end as a replacement for Sneijder - not enough time to make an impact.

  • Mauro Zárate

    Mauro Zárate

Showed plenty of dynamism after coming on for Castaignos with 27 minutes to go but did not make anything happen.

  • Cristiano Lupatelli

    Cristiano Lupatelli

In truth, not exactly overworked and yet conceded two goals. In fairness, he could have done nothing about either striker - particularly the first. Marshalled his area well, too, coming out twice to deny Castaignos during the second half.

  • Mario Sampirisi

    Mario Sampirisi

Fared reasonably well but was left red-faced after being nutmegged by Sneijder midway through the second half.

  • Andreas Granqvist

    Andreas Granqvist

Reasonably solid showing for the most part but he did have the ball lobbed over his head by Obi during the one-two which led to Poli making it 2-0.

  • Emiliano Moretti

    Emiliano Moretti

Relatively impressive performance from Moretti, who was rarely troubled by Castaignos or indeed the supporting Sneijder.

  • Marco Rossi

    Marco Rossi

He was one of only two survivors from the side that defeated Udinese, so losing him after just 24 minutes with an injury was a blow. Replaced by Constant.

  • Juraj Kucka

    Juraj Kucka

A reported Inter target, Kucka kept things ticking over in midfield but did not distinguish himself in any way, shape or form.

  • F. Seymour

    F. Seymour

Had plenty of neat touches and showed off a decent range of passing but failed to make anything happen.

  • Valter Birsa

    Valter Birsa

By far and away Genoa’s best player, he was responsible for cheeky nutmeg on Poli and proved a relatively reliable source of quality ball from the right-hand side. Indeed, he created the visitors’ best chance with a fine cross for Pratto which went unconverted. Never afraid to take on Zanetti but, ultimately, got little change out of the veteran Argentine. Was rewarded with a goal for his endeavour right at the death, though.

  • Cristobal Jorquera

    Cristobal Jorquera

Disappointingly, he featured only in flashes. Linked up well with Pratto at times and nearly produced a killer ball on a couple of occasions, but, overall, he failed to deliver.

  • Lucas Pratto

    3

    Lucas Pratto

Worked gamely throughout and showed in patches what he could do. However, he fluffed Genoa’s best chance when he failed to get any purchase on Birsa’s cross from out wide and could only shoot straight at Castellazzi after pouncing on a loose pass back. A frustrating evening for the forward only compounded by seeing his late headed attempt come back off the bar.

  • Zé Eduardo

    Zé Eduardo

Always willing to drop deep in order to get involved and make things happen, but to no avail. Showed good footwork and made some clever runs but never had a clear sight of goal and was replaced with just over 20 minutes to go.

Kevin Constant Flop of the Match

Belatedly came on for Rossi midway through the first half, after taking an eternity to get himself ready. Need not have bothered, in truth, as the only thing he did worthy of note was fire high and wide before being subbed early in the second period.

  • Alberto Marchiori

    Alberto Marchiori

Thrown on in place of Constant nine minutes into the second half and did not really put a foot wrong without ever catching the eye.

  • Giuseppe Sculli

    Giuseppe Sculli

Got himself involved after being introduced in place of Ze Eduardo for the last 21 minutes but made no discernible impact.
