Live Commentary

  • Greg Stobart: "It wasn't a thriller but Fabio Capello will have learned about some of his players tonight as England beat Sweden for the first time in 43 years. Stewart Downing, for example, produced one of his best displays in an England shirt while Jack Rodwell and Kyle Walker were very encouraging on their full international debuts. In truth, Sweden offered little threat and looked disinterested in making a game of it."
  • FULL TIME! A Gareth Barry header is credited as England's 2,000 goal as they manage to keep a clean sheet for the second time in a week.
  • 90' + 2'

Milner gets a cross from the right hand side, after great work from Walker, but Bent can't manage to get his header on target and the ball is played out for a corner.
  • 80'
Greg Stobart: "The attendance has been confirmed as 48,876, the lowest for an international at the new Wembley. It's by no means an awfully poor turnout, but the vast stadium does look rather odd when only half full."
  • 78'
Larsson hits a Ronaldinho style shot from the right wing, but Carson unlike Seaman manages to get a hand to the ball in order to palm away from danger.
  • 76'
Barry sets up Downing on the edge of the area, but the Liverpool winger's effort goes flying over Isaksson's bar.
  • 73'
England are now just happy to keep a hold of the ball, with Bursaspor keeper Carson seeing a lot of it recently.

  • 70'
The game is starting to once again fall into the typical friendly category, with both sides constantly changing their side, which has led to a break up in the play.
  • 67'
Greg Stobart: "Any rhythm this game did have has been totally disrupted by a string of substitutions from both sides. It really needs a spark from one of the players to inject some energy into the game, with Stewart Downing and Daniel Sturridge looking like they may to, be able to provide. The crowd has also lost its ebullience since the break and the atmosphere around Wembley is somewhat eerie despite the best efforts of the band to my right."
  • 66'
Toivonen gives the ball away in the middle of the park, allowing Downing an opportunity to race forward and have a strike at goal, which Isaksson does well to get down and smother.
  • 64'
Baines finds Downing on the left and his cross is met by Zamora, but his shot from close range is deflected away for yet another corner to the hosts.

England kick off the second half.
  • Greg Stobart: "The referee signals half-time with a curt blow on his whistle and the players leave the pitch to warm applause from the supporters that are here tonight. England have been the better side against a desperately disappointing Sweden team and go in at the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to Daniel Majstorovic. It's not been very inspiring, but Fabio Capello's side could easily have doubled the advantage in the closing stages of the half but Phil Jones and Jack Rodwell both missed excellent chances."
  • HALF TIME! England go into the break a goal up, when in reality they should be further ahead.
  • 44'

Greg Stobart at Wembley: "Fabio Capello and Stuart Pearce – making a rare appearance at a full international – are taking turns to march into the England technical area to bark instructions at the players. Despite seeing his side take the lead through Daniel Majstorovic's own goal, Capello doesn't look particularly happy as he stands cross-armed, occasionally leaning back on his heels to implore the England players to play with more urgency. Both sides are looking unsure of their touch this evening, misplacing even the most routine passes. Perhaps it's something to do with the patchy Wembley pitch, some of which appears to have been recently relaid."
  • 33'
Hart is forced to make a superb save to prevent Elm's corner from going straight into the net, as he palms over for another corner to the Swedes.

  • 25'
England look like the more likely going forward, as they search for more goals to help liven up the sparse crowd at Wembley.
  • 22'
    Goal Gareth Barry
  • 19'
Both Walcott and Walker are striking up a good partnership down the right for England, with the Tottnham full back eventually crossing from the wing, but Majstorovic is there to make the clearing header.
  • 17'
Walcott and Zamora play a couple of passes with each other, before the Fulham striker has a shot on goal, which hits the side netting of Isaksson's goal.
  • 15'
Zamora tries to get onto a long ball from a free kick, but he can't get onto the pass as Isaksson comes out to collect the ball easily.
  • 13'
Greg Stobart: "After an initial smattering of boos for John Terry, the crowd are now not reacting at all when the England captain touches the ball - although he does look a little jittery. Absolutely nothing of note has happened in a scrappy opening to the game and both sides have shown a distinct lack of quality on the ball. England's best avenue to the Sweden goal already looks to be through their jet-heeled right side combination of Kyle Walker and Theo Walcott."
  • 12'
Wernbloom is fouled by Jones on the edge of the area, allowing Larsson to hit a free kick, which goes straight into the England wall and is cleared to safety.
  • 9'
Terry nearly messes up for England after he hits a clearance off of Elmander, but the skipper is let off the hook by the fact that Ibrahimovic didn't look interested in going for the ball and allowed Cahill to take possession.

  • 4'
Walcott races down the right, before cutting back to Walker, who crosses for Downing, but he can't make and connection and Sweden manage to clear the ball to safety.
  • 2'
Both sides start the game by putting both of their keepers under pressure early on with poor back passes, which they manage to deal with.
  • 1'
    Sweden get the game underway.
•'s Greg Stobart at Wembley: "Good evening from a very empty Wembley, where the players have completed their warm-ups and will shortly be walking out of the tunnel ahead of kick-off. The anticipated attendance today is 50,000 but even that seems a little optimistic, with virtually the whole of the upper tier unoccupied. As expected, there is a family feel to the occasion, more like at an under-21 game, with children having plenty of fun with blow-up flags. John Terry will hardly be walking into the lions' den."
