Turkey 0-3 Croatia: Olic, Mandzukic & Corluka all on target to give Slaven Bilic's side comprehensive play-off advantage

The ineffective hosts saw the majority of possession but were shut out by a stern defence and punished by the incisive visitors

Turkey slumped to a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of an incisive Croatia side in the first leg of the Euro 2012 play-off. The hosts saw the majority of possession, but breakaway goals from Ivica Olic, Mario Mandzukic and Vedran Croluka gave Slaven Bilic’s side a stranglehold on the tie.

The Turkish crowd were urging their side on from the start, but their spirits were dampened seconds into the game when Vedran Corluka ghosted through a static defence and pulled the ball back to Olic, who tapped his shot into an empty net.

The hosts fought back, and although they dominated possession, the gaps in their defence were still plain to see. Less than a minute after Hamit Altintop’s cross almost found Burak Yilmaz, Ivan Rakitic was afforded too much space and flashed a shot wide from distance.

As the game wore on, Turkey’s midfield became more and more careless in possession and they were soon punished for their lack of incisiveness.

Luka Modric collected the ball on the right, floated in a cross to Mandzukic on the left, who beat Gokhan Gonul in the air and headed the ball past Volkan Demirel who made little effort to keep the ball out of his goal.

Turkey’s poor half was compounded at the stroke of half time when Gokhan Gonul gave the ball away and were it not for a poor first touch from Olic and brave goalkeeping from Volkan, the hosts would have gone into the changing room 3-0 down.

Guus Hiddink threw on Gokhan Tore at the break in an effort to galvanise his team, but the youngster’s introduction was to have little effect The visitors did eventually make it three when Darijo Srna swung in a free-kick from the right wing and Corluka met the ball at the near post to head his side into an unassailable lead.

Simunic almost made it four from an almost identical position, before Volkan was called into action to beat away a Modric effort from 25 metres.

Sabri was unlucky to avoid a second yellow card for a shove on Mandzukic as tempers flared, but Arda Turan picked up a booking that will rule him out of the return leg.

Croatia will take a commanding 3-0 lead back to Zagreb for the second leg on Tuesday.
