Cristiano Ronaldo 24', 69'
That's it from me folks. Thank you for joining me, Mohammed Ali, for the live commentary. Keep it here on Goal.com for the match report, player ratings and analysis from this match, and across the Champions League this evening. Until next time.
Lyon's defeat sees them slump to third, three points behind Ajax with two left to play. Madrid are on 12 points as Dinamo Zagreb crash out after a 4-0 defeat to Frank de Boer's men. All to play for on matchday five for the French and Dutch giants.
It's over. Real Madrid have claimed their first win at the Stade Gerland at their sixth attempt. A fantastic free-kick from Ronaldo, complemented by his dubious second half penalty has seen him reach 100 goals for Los Blancos. They are the third team to qualify for the last 16.
90' + 3'
AND THERE's FULL TIME!! LYON 0-2 REAL MADRID - REAL MADRID QUALIFY FOR THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE LAST 16!
90' + 3'
It's almost up. A 2-0 defeat for Lyon is the least they could've hoped for. It really could've ended up with a five/six goal margin for the visitors.
90' + 2'
Ronaldo searches for that hat-trick, but he lays off Jose Callejon who's finish is wide amid defensive pressure.
Three minutes of additional time signalled by the fourth official.
Gourcuff plays a sumptuous through ball into the path of Briand. It's one on one, Casillas races out, but the finish is well wide in the end. Coming upto eight hours that Casillas hasn't conceded a goal.
The fans chant in unison emanating their discontent at Sergio Ramos' pull on Lacazette. The tempo's noticeably slower. Real Madrid three minutes away from securing a place in the last 16.
KALLSTROM! Very close. Casillas was rooted on the spot. Dipping, but goes just over the bar.
Sami Khedira hauls down Lacazette. He's on a yellow too. Free-kick in a dangerous area for the hosts.
Ángel Di María
Substitutions for both sides: Ishak Belfodil comes on for Ederson. Jose Callejon comes on for Angel Di Maria.
Crunching tackle in the middle of the pitch, but still Madrid plough on. Gourcuff pings a lofted ball for Reveilliere, but it rolls out of play.
Jeukonjae on Twitter: The penalty should've been awarded earlier, however, it's a great goal by CR7, I wouldn't be surprised to see a hattrick. Thanks for your comment, keep them coming to @mohammedali_93
BigOfori944 on Twitter: CR7 is simply unstoppable, Hala Madrid.
LACAZETTE! He's hit the bar! From Gourcuff's corner, the youngster has almost reduced the deficit.
Lacazette has been lively since his introduction with les Gones making headaway in attack.
Yellow Card Gonzalo Higuaín
Raul Albiol is booked by the referee. At the Amsterdam ArenA, it's Ajax 3-0 Dinzmo Zagreb. Lyon sinking without trace in Group D.
Bafetimbi Gomis comes off for Alexandre Lacazette. Meanwhile, Di Maria gets the ball into space, but the Argentine takes too long with Lloris snatching the ball away. Ineffectual tonight on 1v1s.
Yellow Card Raúl Albiol
Di Maria forced Lloris into a fine save with a low testing effort. At the other end, calls for a penalty are waved away by Rizzoli and his assistants.
Lassana Diarra attempts a wayward effort. Not going anywhere, that.
Nevertheless, it is Ronaldo who grabs his 14th goal of the season, 100 for Madrid. Gonzalo Higuain, who is French-born, replaces Benzema.
Really a questionable penalty. Mix up between the officials, as it looked like someone was coming back from an offside position. Boos from the Lyon faithful.
Penalty Goal C. Ronaldo
RONALDO SCORES HIS 100TH GOAL FOR REAL MADRID! The penalty is crisp, and fired straight down the middle. It's 2-0, and the Gerland is SILENT!
Ronaldo gets into space, and Dabo hauls him down. It's a penalty, and Ronaldo steps up.....
Really should've been 2-0. - PENALTY TO REAL MADRID!!!
Karim Benzema takes a crunching fall. At the other end, Bafetimbi Gomis makes himself a nuisance and almost gets through. Replays show Kone DID handball. Should've been a penalty to Madrid and Nicola Rizzoli was well positioned.
Looked to me as if Ronaldo was non-existent in this second half. But alas, the Portugal captain has proved me wrong. Takes the ball and fires a powerful effort goalwards, only for it to be palmed away by Lloris. Almost there for his 100th.
Dabo is ticked off by the referee Rizzoli. Zinedine Zidane is pictured watching in the stands. Substitutions for the vistiors. Raul Albiol comes on wearing a face-mask, and replaces Fabio Coentrao.
Di Maria! Superb pass from Ozil, and the Argentine looked certain to score. Ball is taken away from him just as he pulls the trigger. Great last ditch defending by Cris.
Lassana Diarra is the fourth man in the book this evening with a rash challenge on Dabo. Meanwhile, Bakary Kone clashes into Coentrao.
Yellow Card Lassana Diarra
Karim Benzema curls in an effort from distance, which Lloris is equal to. Cristiano Ronaldo, on the brink of 100 goals, has looked a tad quiet in this second period so far. How do you envisage his 100th goal? Tweet me @mohamemdali_93
Yellow Card Kim Källström
Kim Kallstrom is booked for a lunge on Lassana Diarra.
It's Lyon's turn to try and get ahead now. Briand lays it off for Reveilliere who floats in a cross. Headed away by makeshift right-back Lassana Diarra who rises above everyone else.
Lyon desperate to find a goal or risk further problems on matchday five. Mourinho looking quite composed on the touchline, issuing instructions without even moving his lips.
Sami Khedira tries a volley, but its deflected behind for a corner before Di Maria misses with a wayward effort. Los Blancos just pinging the ball around, dictating play through Coentrao and Ozil on the flank.
Ozil and Reveilliere chase the same ball, with the former winning that battle. The Lyon fans are in full voice, despite their team not being able to work the visitors.
Yellow Card Sami Khedira
Sami Khedira is booked for a lunge on Ederson. Second name in the book following Cris' caution earlier on.
And Kallstrom's ball back to Lloris is short, and Benzema hunts down the loose ball to which the French No.1 clears his lines. Dodgy, that.
Kone in the midst of things as Lyon try and make a break from it. Good header in from the defender, but Casillas has that covered. And it's offside too.
And immediately Madrid are on the front foot, Ronaldo slipping Ozil with a simple ball. The German shoots straight at Lloris.
We are away for the second period. Lyon 0-1 Real Madrid.
Jeukonjae on Twitter: this is gonna be all Real till the end. Watch out for CR7's 100th goal tonight. HALA MADRID!
Not long to go before we get underway here again. Can Lyon hit back and stem the onslaught? Or will Real Madrid show their lethal touch, and can Cristiano Ronaldo hit his 100th Real Madrid goal in the next 45 minutes. Questions WILL be answered. Stay tuned folks.
What did you make of the first half? And what's your hopes for the second? I'd like to know. Send me your messages via Twitter to @mohammedali_93.
Half-time in the group's other game. It's Ajax 2-0 Dinamo Zagreb (catch live commentary of that game on Goal.com). As it stands, Real Madrid would qualify from Group D, but cannot win this group if Ajax win tonight. Lyon would be three points behind the Dutchmen.
Lyon on the other hand, have been poor. Aside from sporadic attempts by Jimmy Briand, they've been easily overrun by the nine-time European champions. Toothless upfront, somewhat hopeless on the flanks. The magic is, is that they are fortunate to be only one goal behind. An early goal in the second half and it's all square. Remi Garde has much to do.
Well it really should be more than 1-0 at the break. A scintillating free-kick from, who else? Cristiano Ronaldo. His 99th goal in Real Madrid colours has given the visitors the lead. Mesut Ozil, Karim Benzema and Ronaldo himself really should've added to that total. Profligate finishing.
45' + 1'
It's half-time here in France. Olympique Lyonnais 0-1 Real Madrid.
45' + 1'
Entering one minute of injury time here at Stade Gerland. Corner is inwards, punched away by Lloris. But Briand's effort is low and threatening and almost catches the visitors out.
GOURCUFF! First signal of intent from the hosts. It's the visitors who lose concentration for a second, and the Frenchman hits a stinging effort which Casillas turns for a corner.
Really, and truly should've been two. Ozil gets into that right flank, which has been overrun by Madrid in this game. But as the defence stand off, the German international hits a tame effort at Lloris. Pretty predictable.
Lyon probing for the first time in a while. Ederson gets into the thick of things, but Pepe stands his ground. They need to get an equalising goal.
Rithymat on Twitter: Real Madrid is always the best - They will be once they can finally see off Lyon. Vulnerable at 1-0, despite being dominant. Keep the tweets coming to @mohammedali_93
Quite a big build-up, and again the finish is nowhere. Real Madrid camp out in the hosts' box. But the ball by Di Maria takes out Mesut Ozil instead before Lloris is forced into a good save with a stinging effort.
An early substitution forced upon Lyon. Their best defender in this game, Dejan Lovren is replaced by Bakary Kone.
Flamboyant play from the flamboyant Cristiano Ronaldo. Step-over and tricks galore against the defence, but the ball into the box is clear.
Remi Garde is looking on disapprovingly. They are only a goal down despite Real's dominance. Meanwhile, Ronaldo's wonderful free-kick is his 13th of the season, and 99th overall for the club.
BRIAND! Perhaps Lyon's only shining light up front. It's a good ball, and the winger hits an effort straight at Casillas. Took the sting out of that.
If it wasn't for Lloris, this would've been over already. Again Di Maria is causing waves on the right flank, and the offside flag is down. Lack of killer finishing, but this is easy. Too easy.
Clash of heads between Gomis and Xabi Alonso. Ramos tries an effort from distance. Spectacular mind, unspectacular finish.
Fantastic ball again from the visitors. Di Maria is through on goal, but Lovren's last ditch tackle takes it away. Almost 2-0.
Almost a nightmare from Casillas. Audacious effort from Kim Kallstrom, almost catches out the Spanish keeper.
Fantastic effort by the Portuguese. Misery upon the Lyon fans, the outcome was inevitable. Real dominating this one now.
Goal C. Ronaldo
AND YOU KNOW IT'S GOING IN!! RONALDO WITH A THUNDEROUS FREE-KICK!!! LYON 0-1 REAL MADRID.
Dangerous this. Brilliant ball by Di Maria, touched on by Ozil falls to Benzema who's nudged to the ground by Gourcuff. Just outside the penalty area. Cristiano Ronaldo over this.....
Another Blancos player, this time Sami Khedira slips under control of the ball. Meanwhile, Pepe's weighted ball ahead of Xabi Alonso is too long, and trickles out of play.
A goal to tell you about in Group D: It's Ajax 1-0 Dinamo Zagreb - fantastic effort by Gregory Van der Wiel. Paramount that Lyon win this if that score stays the same.
Jose Mourinho's men are bombing down the flanks. Cris goes to ground after being barged by Benzema. Madrid currently on top at the moment.
Boos coming Cristiano Ronaldo's way. Could it be because he is handsome, rich and a great footballer? No, he's offside.
Before Gourcuff's effort, Ronaldo also had an opportunity. Chested down and hit with fierce power, CR7 was unsuccessful in troubling Lloris.
Both sides attempting chances as we approach the quarter of an hour played. Yoann Gourcuff, back from injury recently, attempts a zipping effort from distance. Nowhere near.
RealFanNr1 on Twitter: Who'll make more saves tonight, Casillas or Lloris, what do you think ? I say Lloris. - The France No.1 has already been forced into action more times than his Spanish counterpart. Thanks for your comment, and keep them coming to @mohammedali_93!
Lloris again wins in the battle of wits against his former team-mate Benzema. Beautiful dink by Di Maria over the heads of defenders into the path of the number 9. Lloris attempts a dummy, and is successful in running the ball out.
Corner is poor. Ozil delivers, with Khedira having an attempt on goal after Lloris plucked the ball out of the air. Opening up this game.
BENZEMA!! FANTASTIC SAVE FROM LLORIS! Almost an opener from the hosts, with the former Lyon striker hitting a fierce shot goalwards, only to be thwarted by Lloris. Really should've been 1-0.
Nice bit of play from the visitors who are finding their rhythm. Hugo Lloris on hand to scythe the ball away near the outside of his area.
Yellow Card Cris
Cris' tackle has earned him the night's first yellow card.
Late tackle from Lyon's Cris. Groans of discontent from the hosts. Free-kick in a good position, but its wasted.
RONALDO! Close from the Portuguese international. Lyon froze for a few seconds from the throw in, and the ball fell at Ronaldo's feet. CR7 attempts a 25 metre effort, which is saved well by Hugo Lloris.
Bit of a nervy start from Real Madrid, with Dejan Lovren penalised for handball. Cristiano Ronaldo attempts to break free, but is well watched.
Free-kick is short, and probed around the midfield. Pepe heads it away, with Briand launching an audacious volley into Casillas' arms. Good try.
Free-kick to Lyon after Jimmy Briand is bodychecked by Sergio Ramos.
Ederson runs the ball out of play after some good work trying to keep it in. Meanwhile, Karim Benzema is booed. He was a key member of Lyon's title winning sides a few years back.
An erratic start from the hosts, who lose the ball shortly after kick-off. Possessing changing hands often in the opening minute.
Referee Nicola Rizzoli gets the match underway. Lyon in their pinkish European strip, with Real Madrid in their traditional white.
The sides are out. The UEFA Champions League anthem rings around the 40,000-plus Stade Gerland. Just one of those nights.
The teams are in the tunnel. Looking quite calm at this stage. Tonight's referee is Nicola Rizzoli of Italy.
Those are the teams. Is it enough for Lyon to avenge their worst ever Champions League defeat, and end Real Madrid's eight game winning streak? Send me your predictions, comments, musings and opinions to Twitter as always to @mohammedali_93 with the hashtag #championsleague. .
TEAM NEWS: Lyon are without Aly Cissokho, Lisandro Lopez and Michel Bastos for the game. Alvaro Arbeloa misses out, with Sergio Ramos moving into defence. Lassana Diarra slots into the right back position. Kaka sits out with a bruised calf, meaning Mesut Ozil takes his position. New Lyon goalkeeper Mathieu Valverde starts from the bench. Karim Benzema faces his former club.
Real Madrid (4-2-3-1): Casillas; Diarra, Ramos, Pepe, Coentrao; Khedira, Xabi Alonso; Ronaldo, Ozil, Di Maria; Benzema Subs: Adan, Albiol, Varane, Granero, Altintop, Callejon, Higuain
Right, now that's out of the way. TEAM NEWS Olympique Lyonnais (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Reveillere, Cris, Lovren, Dabo; Kallstrom, Gonalons; Briand, Gourcuff, Ederson; Gomis Subs: Valverde, B. Kone, Fofana, Umtiti, Lacazette, S. Kone, Belfodil
Further permutations for you statistic geeks out there. Jose Mourinho's men can win the group, and put their names into Pot 1 for the last 16 draw IF they win tonight and Ajax do not defeat Dinamo. Lyon will not be able to win the group if they lose tonight.
Real Madrid, last year's semi-finalists, will be heading into this match with relish. The Spanish giants can become the first side in the Champions League to clinch a place in the last 16 tonight if they defeat Lyon. A draw will suffice for the visitors (who are already assured of at least third) if Ajax do not beat Dinamo Zagreb in tonight's other group game.
Well, it's Lyon - Real Madrid. How many times have we seen this fixture in recent years? The French giants square off with Jose Mourinho's men, desperate to gain revenge for their crushing 4-0 defeat in the Bernabeu two weeks ago. Remi Garde's charges have reason to believe they can: Los Blancos are winless in five trips to the Rhone region over the past six years.
Evening folks, Mohammed Ali here. Welcome to Goal.com's LIVE text commentary of the UEFA Champions League clash between Olympique Lyonnais and Real Madrid from the Stade Gerland. It's a big one, with Group D being potentially won in the next two hours or so. Stay tuned.
