Player Ratings: Real Madrid 2-2 Barcelona

Goal.com rates the players on show as an entertaining first-leg of the Spanish Supercopa ends in a draw

By Jonathan Mitchell

  • Iker Casillas

    Iker Casillas

Had almost nothing to do for the entire match except pick the ball out of the net as Barcelona grabbed two goals against the run of play.

  • Marcelo
    4
    5
    3.00

    Marcelo

Despite being beaten on one or two occasions, the Brazilian left-back stood up reasonably well to the threat of Chilean Alexis Sanchez and never really let him get in behind to hurt his side.

  • Ricardo Carvalho

    3.00

    Ricardo Carvalho

Veteran defender was anonymous, largely because Barcelona rarely threatened in an attacking sense in the first-half. Made one sterling tackle to dispossess Messi in the second-half while sending Ozil away down the left with a visionary pass.

  • Pepe
    4
    6
    3.00

    Pepe

Was rather unfortunate in that his slip allowed Messi to ghost in and slot home to put his side ahead seconds before the half-time whistle. Grew increasingly wreckless as the game went on and was perhaps lucky not to receive further punishment for some of his tackles or be exposed on some of his forays forward. Did, however, lay on Xabi Alonso's goal.

  • Sergio Ramos
    6

    3.00

    Sergio Ramos

On the one occasion that David Villa managed to escape his clutches, the Barcelona No. 7 curled a sublime shot into the top corner to restore parity. Had been a rock at right-back prior to this.

  • Ángel Di María

    2.50

Ángel Di María Flop of the Match

Had a quiet game on the right of Real Madrid's midfield three. Little surprise when Jose Mourinho replaced him early in the second-half.

  • Xabi Alonso
    10
    4
    4.00

    Xabi Alonso

Kept things moving quickly in the first-half, proving to be something of a catalyst for his side's high-tempo style and scored to make it 2-2 with a well-placed finish. Also helped Khedira break up play, which on occasion required him to be a little cute with some of his fouls.

  • Sami Khedira
    7
    3
    3.50

    Sami Khedira

Got through a power of work in front of the Real Madrid defence. It was his boundless energy and intense pressing that ensured the Barcelona midfield could not settle into their usual passing rhythm.

  • Mesut Özil
    20
    5
    3.50

Mesut Özil Top of the Match

Opened the scoring with a cute finish on 13 minutes following great work by Benzema, and put a fantastic cross right on Benzema's head in the second-half, from which he should have scored. Always a threat and at the heart of most of his side's best work.

  • Karim Benzema
    8
    4
    3.50

    Karim Benzema

Frenchman has lost weight but has rediscovered his appetite for the game. Created the first goal with a direct running style and caused Abidal all sorts of problems throughout. Will be disappointed not to have scored.

  • C. Ronaldo
    11
    4
    3.50

    C. Ronaldo

Fired in a couple of long-range efforts, one of which drew a decent save from Valdes in the 15th minute. Really came to life in the second-half and stung Valdes' palms with a few more decent efforts while firing a trademark free-kick inches wide.

Substitutions

  • Fabio Coentrao

    Fabio Coentrao

Won a dangerous free-kick on edge of the area from which Ronaldo almost scored.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín

    2.50

    Gonzalo Higuaín

Argentine put himself about up front in short time on pitch.

  • José Callejón
    4
    3
    3.00

    José Callejón

Showed real exuberance after coming off the bench, but this often resulted in him giving away needless fouls. Almost fired his side into the lead with an angled drive in 85th minute.

  • Víctor Valdés
    7
    2
    3.50

    Víctor Valdés

The Barcelona custodian was well worked, making several saves to thwart Ronaldo and Benzema. Could do little to prevent Ozil from scoring but did make one outstanding athletic save to claw Benzema's header out of the top corner.

  • Adriano
    6
    2
    3.00

    Adriano

Started at left-back, where he worked hard and kept Di Maria quiet in his 54 minutes on the pitch. Impressed with some strong defending, including one or two clever interceptions.

  • Javier Mascherano
    4
    1
    3.00

    Javier Mascherano

Continued in central defence, where he filled in towards the end of last season - most notably in the Champions League final. Made one fantastic sliding tackle to block from Benzema in the 43rd minute and was reasonably solid for a player playing out of position.

  • Éric Abidal
    6
    1
    2.50

    Éric Abidal

Partnered Mascherano at the heart of the Barcelona defence. Was turned inside out by Benzema for opening goal and looked clumsy and a little nervous for much of the match.

  • Daniel Alves
    6
    1
    3.00

    Daniel Alves

Never managed to influence the game much in an attacking sense, but neither was he exposed defensively by direct opponent Ronaldo, who he even thwarted with impressive last-ditch tackles.

  • Thiago Alcántara
    6
    1
    3.00

    Thiago Alcántara

After a series of sensational summer performances in the Uefa European under-21 championships, the 20-year-old was rewarded with a start. Yet, despite a couple of flashes of fantastic footwork, he never quite showed what he is capable of.

  • Andrés Iniesta Luján
    6
    1
    3.00

    Andrés Iniesta Luján

Was tidy in possession but didn't really look himself until Xavi joined proceedings in the second-half.

  • Seydou Keita
    6
    1
    2.50

    Seydou Keita

Anchored the Barcelona midfield but failed to stem the tide as Real Madrid's attacking midfield triumvirate surged forward time and again.

  • David Villa
    8
    1
    3.50

    David Villa

Restored parity in the 36th minute with a stunning curling effort from the left-hand side of the box. Was ineffective against Spanish international team-mate Ramos for the most part, however.

  • Messi
    11
    3
    3.50

    Messi

Was coolness personified as he capitalised on Pepe's defensive slip to give the Catalans a shock half-time lead. Didn't impact on the game in the way he can, but produced some deft touches and clever movement.

  • Alexis Sánchez
    7
    1
    3.00

    Alexis Sánchez

The €26 million summer signing from Udinese sparked into life on occasions, skipping past Marcelo with ease, but never threatened to really hurt Real Madrid in the final third.

Substitutions

  • Piqué
    5
    2
    3.00

    Piqué

Settled the defence after replacing Adriano and moving into the centre while Abidal pushed out to the left.

  • Xavi
    7
    2
    3.00

    Xavi

Managed to get on the ball and help his side retain possession more effectively than they did in the first-half.

  • Pedro
    6
    2
    3.00

    Pedro

Should have won a penalty when Marcelo bundled into him from behind in the 87th minute.
