South Korea 2-1 UAE: Park Chu-Young nets again as struggling west Asians near exit
The Taeguk Warriors struggled to break down the lowly Emirates in the first-half, but found their stride after the interval to move to seven points from three games
By Ben Somerford
Park Chu-Young netted again as South Korea heaped the misery on struggling UAE with a 2-0 triumph at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Tuesday evening's third round 2014 World Cup qualifier.
UAE came into the clash without a point after two games and with a new manager following Srecko Katanec's recent sacking, but appeared a resolute outfit in the first-half going into the break deadlocked.
However, the Taeguk Warriors cracked their opponents in the second-half with Arsenal striker Park breaking the deadlock before an own goal sealed the victory on 63 minutes.
UAE, led by interim boss Dr Abdullah Misfir, came out in the first-half with a defensive plan, but almost sprang the Koreans from a dangerous set-piece, while Subait Khater fired wide too.
After a frustrating first-half, Korea broke through after the interval with Park taking his recent international tally to seven goals in four games.
Youngster Seo Jung-Jin produced the pass for the Korea skipper who rolled a calm right-footed finish past UAE keeper Majed Nasser to put his side ahead on 50 minutes.
Thirteen minutes later the east Asians doubled their advantage when UAE defender Hamdan Al Kamali put the ball into his own net from a Ki Sung-Yueng corner.
Korea boss Cho Kwang-Rae brought on fresh attackers Nam Tae-Hee, Son Heung-Min and Lee Dong-Gook as he searched for a third but it didn't come.
Late in the contest, UAE pulled one back through Ismail Matar from close range but it was mere consolation as they slipped to their third defeat in their three qualifiers.
