Player Ratings: Inter 1-2 Juventus

Mirko Vucinic and Claudio Marchisio grabbed the goals as the Old Lady returned to the top of Serie A with a win at San Siro meaning Maicon's thunderbolt was all in vain

    Luca Castellazzi

Deserved more after making an excellent save from Matri, but Vucinic followed in to give Juve the lead. Well beaten by Marchisio’s winner, but pulled off an excellent late save from Estigarribia thanks to an outstretched boot.

  • Cristian Chivu

    Cristian Chivu

Couldn’t keep up with the movement of Matri at times as the striker caused havoc at the back, and his needless foul on Vucinic almost led to the striker adding Juve’s third. Still proving to be the weak link in the Inter defence.

  • Lúcio

    Lúcio

May have been pulled around at regular intervals by the Juve strike force, but he used his superb strength to full effect at times as the Bianconeri looked to get in behind him. Produced one piece of great tracking to ease out Matri.

  • Yuto Nagatomo
    117

    2.50

Yuto Nagatomo Flop of the Match

Failed to stop Lichtsteiner getting a cross in on the first goal and was then slow to react as Marchisio lined up the winning strike. Improved after the break, but wasn’t enough of a threat going forward to forgive the space he offered at the back.

  • Maicon
    156
    213
    3.50

    Maicon

Got forward and threatened more than once before unleashing a stunning effort off the knee of Bonucci and beyond Buffon to equalise. Took the ball away from Zarate later in the first half despite the Argentine being better placed, then faded in the second period.

  • Javier Zanetti
    124
    204
    3.00

    Javier Zanetti

Made one particularly fantastic run down the right in the opening moments, beating three men and getting an excellent cross in. He was the hardest worker of the midfield three, but his body is starting to finally get the better of him, meaning he cannot influence the game as he once could.

  • Esteban Cambiasso
    58
    229
    2.50

    Esteban Cambiasso

Hooked an early effort across goal as Juve were left scrambling, and failed to get close to the Juve midfield. Passed the ball well at times, but has become a more and more lightweight figure in the Inter side, with many of his later passes more desperate than decisive.

  • Wesley Sneijder
    124
    305
    3.50

    Wesley Sneijder

Looked to be struggling with a leg injury, but still managed to send Maicon in for Inter’s leveller. Remained the home side’s biggest creative threat, but was dealt some rough stuff and was eventually substituted after one knock too many.

  • Joel Obi
    65
    243
    3.00

    Joel Obi

His energy in midfield was a valuable addition from what Inter were able to offer at Atalanta in midweek, with a couple of excellent crosses going ignored by the Nerazzurri strikers. Lost the ball a bit too easily in the second half and was substituted after little over an hour to allow Stankovic to enter the fray.

  • Mauro Zárate
    74
    237
    2.50

    Mauro Zárate

Not as effective as in the week, but perhaps harshly withdrawn at the break nonetheless. Could well have had a great chance to score had Maicon not taken Obi’s cross away from him.

  • Giampaolo Pazzini
    131
    212
    3.50

    Giampaolo Pazzini

An impudent flick from Maicon’s deflected shot almost brought Inter a third-minute lead, and then he produced a thunderous header which crashed off Buffon’s bar with the keeper beaten. His movement caused issues all night for the Juve defence, but he couldn’t muster an equaliser.

Substitutions

  • Ricardo Álvarez

    Ricardo Álvarez

Had a positive influence when he replaced Sneijder, but didn’t have quite enough to bring Inter level.

  • Dejan Stankovic
    55
    209
    2.50

    Dejan Stankovic

Brought on for Obi midway through the second half, but couldn’t transform his experience into a telling contribution near the end.

  • Luc Castaignos
    47
    235
    2.50

    Luc Castaignos

Replaced Zarate at the break, but was unable to get a real foothold in the game as Inter chased an equaliser. Just too slow to reach a Sneijder ball to the left channel, and failed to add any real creative spark.

  • Gianluigi Buffon
    597
    37
    3.00

    Gianluigi Buffon

Beaten by the deflection of Bonucci as Maicon brought Inter level, and appeared set to concede a second when Pazzini’s excellent header came back off the bar. Was very solid as an organiser late on as Juve held on with something to spare.

  • Leonardo Bonucci
    405
    303
    2.50

    Leonardo Bonucci

Picked up a silly yellow card after getting on the wrong side of Zarate, then failed to put in a challenge as Maicon fired in an equaliser. Struggled with Pazzini’s movement for much of the night, but was thankful that his team-mates allowed little service to the Inter frontman.

  • Andrea Barzagli
    553
    31
    3.00

    Andrea Barzagli

Easily beaten when he went for a high ball with his feet as Pazzini thundered a header off the bar, but he dealt with the striker better than Bonucci did for the most part.

  • Giorgio Chiellini
    455
    157
    2.50

    Giorgio Chiellini

Beaten more than once early on as Inter immediately targeted him as a weak link, then was later booked for blocking off Pazzini’s run. Also beaten by Maicon’s header as Cambiasso almost scored, but grew into the game in the second half.

  • Stephan Lichtsteiner
    562
    106
    3.00

    Stephan Lichtsteiner

His superb low cross for Matri opened the way for Vucinic’s opener, and his positive running put Juve on the front foot. However, he let Obi get a few too many crosses in as the young Nigerian caused him some trouble.

  • Arturo Vidal
    717
    42
    3.50

    Arturo Vidal

Yellow-carded for a reckless challenge on Pazzini just before the break, but it was a rare black spot for the Chilean, who again provided the physical input in the middle just ahead of Pirlo. His energy and workrate were both excellent.

  • Andrea Pirlo
    732
    76
    3.50

    Andrea Pirlo

Dictated play once more, and one delightful ball over the top should have resulted in a second goal for Marchisio after the regista found his team-mate in acres of space. Booked for a late challenge on Sneijder midway through the second period.

  • Claudio Marchisio
    757
    25
    3.50

    Claudio Marchisio

After a slow start, he popped up just as Inter had got on top, playing a one-two with Matri and firing beyond Castellazzi. Then lofted wide from Pirlo’s delightful pass as the keeper came rushing out in his eye corner, but he’d already done enough to be Juve’s match-winner against both Milan sides.

  • Simone Pepe
    545
    78
    3.50

    Simone Pepe

An energetic effort as ever, though his challenges were sometimes reckless, with one foul on Maicon earning him a yellow card. Still, if some of the more skilful players in the league put in a similar shift to the former Udinese man, it might add some zeroes to their price tags.

  • Mirko Vučinić
    689
    42
    3.50

    Mirko Vučinić

Did superbly to hold back as Matri made a near-post run, meaning he was left with a tap-in after Castellazzi’s excellent save. Led the assault out wide very well for the most part, and will be pleased to have added a goal to his account after some frustrating performances in front of goal of late.

  • Alessandro Matri

Alessandro Matri Top of the Match

After making the near-post run that opened the way for Vucinic’s opener, he found space increasingly easy to come by on the counter-attack. Also provided the final pass for Marchisio as Juve regained the lead, as the ace scorer became provider supreme.

Substitutions

  • Marcelo Estigarribia
    530
    57
    3.00

    Marcelo Estigarribia

Brought on for Matri for the final 20 minutes and could have added a third when he got clear down the left but for Castellazzi’s left boot.

  • Michele Pazienza

    Replaced Vidal late on.

  • Alessandro Del Piero

    Alessandro Del Piero

A late sub, he had a great chance to add a third but dragged his shot wide.
