Player Ratings: Atalanta 1-1 Inter

Luca Castellazzi's late penalty save stole the headlines after German Denis had pegged back Inter following Wesley Sniejder's deflected opener

    Andrea Consigli

Left helpless by Cigarini’s deflection on Sneijder’s goalbound effort as Inter snatched the lead, and could have conceded a second but for Milito’s horror miss. However, his tip wide from Zarate’s shot across goal was equally as vital.

  • Stefano Lucchini

    Stefano Lucchini

Had some hearts in mouths around the stadium when his block diverted just wide of goal, but was largely solid throughout as he and Capelli formed a hugely effective barrier ahead of Milito and later Pazzini.

  • Daniele Capelli

    Daniele Capelli

Was rock solid at the back from start to finish, though sometimes it was by foul means more than fair that he kept out Pazzini in particular. Still, his endeavour was to be applauded as his side pulled off a creditable draw.

  • Federico Peluso

    Federico Peluso

Got forward to test Julio Cesar from an early corner, but thereafter was largely tasked with the job of keeping Inter out. Regularly outdone by the impressive Zarate as Atalanta were exposed down his side.

  • Andrea Masiello

    Andrea Masiello

Got a vital touch to the ball when it seemed destined for a tap-in from Cambiasso at the far post, and successfully jockeyed several Inter forwards away from good positions. A very solid defensive effort.

  • Ezequiel Schelotto

    Ezequiel Schelotto

His pace down the right caused problems almost immediately for Stankovic, Chivu, Nagatomo, and pretty much everyone else in a white shirt. Rarely let up in his pursuit of wreaking havoc, and few would have begrudged him a goal if he’d managed to snatch one.

  • Giacomo Bonaventura

    3.00

    Giacomo Bonaventura

Caused Maicon and Zanetti problems by showing a willingness to go at them on either foot, and even sent one stinging left-foot drive towards the near post to force a save from Castellazzi. One to keep an eye on.

  • Maximiliano Moralez

    Maximiliano Moralez

May not have added to his goal tally, but it was his assist for Denis which pulled Atalanta back level. His nimble feet had Inter’s static defence on their heels on a couple of notable occasions. Did more than enough to stave off the competition and keep his starting spot.

  • Luca Cigarini

    3.00

    Luca Cigarini

Unfortunate to see his deflection of Sneijder’s shot find the bottom corner after having been the source of much of Atalanta’s more creative midfield play. Continued to feed the wide players in his belligerent way before being replaced by Carmona.

  • Simone Padoin

    Simone Padoin

Much of the midfield creativity came from the wide areas or from Cigarini, but Padoin put in an important shift in front of the defence. Continues to be a very effective shield for Cigarini.

  • Germán Denis
    19

    Germán Denis

Headed home to finish a nice move and peg Inter back. Led the line well as ever, providing his team-mates with important breathers from Inter’s regular attacks. However, he’ll be going to bed tonight remembering his penalty miss more than any of those positive moments, knowing his side could have won the game.

    Guido Marilungo

Late replacement for Moralez, and won the penalty which Denis conspired to miss.

  • Julio César

    3.00

    Julio César

Sold short by his defenders at times as Atalanta forced many an opportunity, including Denis’ equaliser. Unable to return after the half-time interval.

  • Javier Zanetti
    48
    24

    Javier Zanetti

If only they made more like him. With players virtually half his age failing to show the right amount of spirit, the captain makes up for it in abundance. Constantly looked to add whatever energy he could on the ball, and got some vital touches in to halt Atalanta attacks.

  • Lúcio
    37
    23
    3.00

    Lúcio

His clever backheel with Denis on his back thwarted early danger, and he continued to take to his defending in that unorthodox yet dominant style for the most part.

  • Maicon
    33
    29
    3.00

    Maicon

His clever leave was as much an assist for Sneijder’s goal as was Zarate’s pass, and it was just one of a number of examples of attacking intelligence from the Brazilian. However, his defending still leaves something to be desired, and at times it was he that looked like a young upstart and Bonaventura the seasoned pro.

  • Cristian Chivu
    42
    61
    2.50

Cristian Chivu Flop of the Match

Was tested by the pace of Schelotto whenever he cut inside, and then went completely missing as Denis ghosted in to head home Moralez’s cross to equalise. Stupidly gave away the late penalty by bringing down Marilungo, meaning he owes Luca Castellazzi a drink tonight.

  • Yuto Nagatomo
    42
    37
    3.00

    Yuto Nagatomo

Clattered into the dangerous Schelotto, meaning he could have been yellow-carded after only four minutes. Spent too long standing off the wideman after that moment, leading to many an Atalanta chance being created from his wing.

  • Dejan Stankovic
    28
    33
    3.00

    Dejan Stankovic

Had trouble keeping up with the lively Schelotto down his flank, and was booked soon after winning a corner for going through the back of Moralez before then sending a shot skywards. Hit a belter just over the bar with 20 minutes to play.

  • Wesley Sneijder
    71
    18
    3.00

    Wesley Sneijder

The way in which his shot ended in the back of the net via Cigarini may have been fortunate, but by then he’d already made his own luck with his angled runs having caused many a problem to Atalanta’s backline. Faded as his lack of games caught up with him.

  • Esteban Cambiasso
    19
    30
    2.50

    Esteban Cambiasso

Was the youngest member of a midfield with a combined age of 102 years and five months, but often looked the least mobile of the three. Even let a couple of simple passes role out of his reach as he failed to get at Atalanta with any great purpose.

  • Diego Milito
    33
    51
    2.50

    Diego Milito

His evening was summed up by a single moment in the 78th minute when Maicon’s cross from the right came to him at chest height, but his attempted nudge into the empty net flew over the bar. Simply not got that goal touch of 2009-10 anymore.

  • Mauro Zárate
    110
    18

Mauro Zárate Top of the Match

Regularly Inter’s big threat. Got to the byeline well down the right, but Milito failed to gamble on the ball getting across, then went as far as the edge of the area before pulling back for Sneijder as Inter took the lead. Ran right into Masiello in the hope of winning a penalty, then forced a great save from Consigli. Surprisingly withdrawn for Obi.

Substitutions

  • Luca Castellazzi

    Luca Castellazzi

Had to be on his toes to deny Bonaventura at the near post, and then pulled off a match-saving penalty stop with just a few minutes left on the clock. Inter’s hero on the night.

  • Joel Obi
    36
    22

    Joel Obi

Brought on for Zarate, but despite a couple of early energetic runs he couldn’t quite supply the impetus the Argentine had added before his withdrawal.

  • Giampaolo Pazzini
    44
    22
    3.00

    Giampaolo Pazzini

Replaced Sneijder and almost immediately had the chance to hit the target but snatched at a left-foot effort. Caused more trouble in 30 minutes than Milito did in 90, leading to some rough-house tactics from the Atalanta centre-backs, but couldn’t find the breakthrough.
