Player Ratings: Juventus 2-2 Genoa

Andrea Caracciolo nicked a point at Juventus Stadium after Alessandro Matri's double had looked set to make Marco Rossi's temporary equaliser meaningless

  • Marco Storari

    2.50

    Marco Storari

Left stranded by his backline as Rossi levelled with a wicked downward header, and though conceding on your near post is never a feather in a keeper’s cap, he was left short-handed by poor defending once more. Made a crucial late stop from Jorquera.

  • Leonardo Bonucci

    Leonardo Bonucci

Had a fairly comfortable game for the most part as Palacio was largely left up front by himself, but when Caracciolo came on he looked less at ease, and he was beaten by the striker’s quicker reactions as Genoa brought it back to 2-2.

  • Andrea Barzagli

    Andrea Barzagli

Got in a couple of very important headers from Genoa attacks, but was nowhere to be seen when Jankovic’s throughball in his channel found Merkel in the lead-up to the first equaliser. Probably Juve’s best defender on the night though.

  • Giorgio Chiellini

Giorgio Chiellini Flop of the Match

Still not comfortable at left-back. Did a lot of the solid defensive work that he would have done whatever his position, but often lacked the right pass when attacking out wide, and then completely lost Rossi on the first Genoa equaliser before failing to get up ahead of Kucka on the second.

  • Stephan Lichtsteiner
    125

    2.50

    Stephan Lichtsteiner

Left flat-footed as Antonelli went straight past him in the opening minutes, and then beaten by Jankovic’s pass as Merkel set up Rossi’s goal. Guilty also of taking the odd risk at 2-1, but his passing was largely neat and tidy and he made one important late interception as the visitors broke forward.

  • Simone Pepe

    Simone Pepe

Committed as ever but his final touch is not always the best, as summed up by one long-range effort that finished somewhere around the second tier. Ran hard into space at regular intervals, but with the killer ball his play seemed a little short of the mark.

  • Marcelo Estigarribia
    176

    3.00

    Marcelo Estigarribia

Had one early pot-shot as he looked to get into the game, then his neat touch beat Mesto, who could easily have received a second yellow for his late challenge. A later cross led to Matri heading just over with a steered effort.

  • Claudio Marchisio
    102

    Claudio Marchisio

It was his strike from just outside the area which was turned home by Matri in the early stages, but thereafter he went missing far too often. There were no examples of his usual trademark timed runs into the box, while he failed to get close enough to Veloso and Seymour as Genoa gained confidence and space in midfield.

  • Andrea Pirlo

    Andrea Pirlo

After his corner led to Juve’s opener, his balance, control and perfect passing mesmerised the Genoa midfield at first, but Merkel in particular started to put him under pressure, and he was booked for pulling the German back. Continued to play his game though, and could easily fashioned more half-chances later in the game.

  • Alessandro Matri

Alessandro Matri Top of the Match

Showed sharp instincts to turn Marchisio’s strike from Pirlo’s corner beyond Frey for an early goal, then some great movement saw him get beyond Dainelli and force a save out of the Genoa keeper. Continued to find space, and got onto Vucinic’s pass with a neat touch and finish to double his account.

  • Mirko Vučinić
    90
    122
    3.00

    Mirko Vučinić

Far too slow on the ball as Merkel dropped deep to steal possession just as Juve were looking to build, then should have scored after receiving a slack pass from Veloso, but he shot straight at Frey. Just as it looked like it wasn’t his night he played a delightful left-foot pass through for Matri’s second goal.

Substitutions

  • Milos Krasic

    Milos Krasic

A late entry onto the field in place of Vucinic, he couldn’t help Juve hold on to their 2-1 lead.

    Michele Pazienza

Replaced Estigarribia as Juve looked to adapt to Genoa’s threat in their search for a second equaliser, reinforcing the centre of midfield.

  • Alessandro Del Piero

Given only injury time to make a difference in place of Pepe.

    Sebastien Frey

After being beaten by a redirected shot, he was thankful to see Vucinic firestraight at him after Veloso’s error. Later did well to tip a deflected shot from Matri wide, though he couldn’t react quick enough to stop the striker bagging a second.

  • Dario Dainelli
    14
    19
    2.50

    Dario Dainelli

Booked for going right through Vucinic twice in the same move, having already found the Juve attackers difficult to keep up with. Also turned slowly as Matri beat him to get a shot in at the near post, but in the air he was decisive on a number of occasions.

  • Emiliano Moretti

    22
    3.00

    Emiliano Moretti

Nearly got up to head home after going upfield for a corner, but at times he was completely off the mark defensively, with Matri and Vucinic able to work their way into space in and around the six-yard box.

  • Luca Antonelli
    11
    19
    3.00

    Luca Antonelli

His early bursts forward which had Lichtsteiner on the back-foot were soon curtailed as Juve had the better of possession, but he was rarely completely outdone by Pepe despite not getting the chance to attack as much as he might have liked.

  • Giandomenico Mesto
    5
    23
    3.00

    Giandomenico Mesto

After picking up one yellow card for protesting after Matri gave Juve the lead, he could easily have seen a second for a late challenge on Estigarribia. One excellent low ball across the area should have been turned how by a gambling forward, as his industry on the flank often went unnoticed.

  • Marco Rossi
    22
    19
    3.50

    Marco Rossi

What is it about him and Turin? After a brace in a losing effort in 2010, he added another as Genoa earned a point in 2011, racing forward into space to meet Merkel’s delicious cross with a perfect downward header. Never stopped running, but when does he ever?

  • Miguel Veloso
    27
    22
    3.00

    Miguel Veloso

Looked to be finding his feet in the midfield battle before his horrendous pass straight to Vucinic which should have resulted in a second Juventus goal. That apart he was generally composed, and after Juve’s full-backs showed signs of weakness he made a point of spreading play wide when the option was open.

  • Alexander Merkel
    175
    17
    3.50

    Alexander Merkel

Showed excellent awareness of danger when back-tracking to steal the ball off Vucinic, then lifted a pinpoint left-foot cross over to Rossi as Genoa equalised. His left-foot flick almost put the visitors ahead, and then he steered a great headed effort onto the bar.

  • Bosko Jankovic
    33
    17
    2.50

    Bosko Jankovic

Showed great reactions to beat Pepe to a bouncing ball, winning Genoa a free-kick on the edge of the area. Then his magnificent ball inside Lichtsteiner sent Merkel through as the Grifone levelled. Faded in and out of the game though, and he was replaced by Caracciolo after the hour mark.

  • F. Seymour

    24
    3.00

    F. Seymour

Looked to get on the ball in the opening encounters, but quickly fell off the pace as Genoa resorted to a largely counter-attacking style. Played a few nice balls, but was eventually replaced by Kucka when the visitors needed new ideas.

  • Rodrigo Palacio
    23
    20
    3.00

    Rodrigo Palacio

An elbow in the face from Pirlo was about all he had to show for a quiet opening quarter, then very hard done to when booked for rightly questioning a free-kick call he should have had go his way. But he continued to plough a virtual lone furrow, and his off-the-ball movement helped lead to Genoa’s opening goal.

Substitutions

  • Cristobal Jorquera

    Cristobal Jorquera

Thrown on late on in place of Rossi and nearly won in with a stinging effort which Storari had to be at full stretch to keep out.

  • Juraj Kucka
    33
    17
    3.00

    Juraj Kucka

Given 20 minutes in place of Seymour, and it was enough for him to set up Caracciolo’s equaliser with a towering header ahead of Chiellini.

  • Andrea Caracciolo
    35
    23
    3.50

    Andrea Caracciolo

Brought on in place of Jankovic soon after Juve regained the lead and eventually did the job, turning home after Chiellini was beaten in the air by Kucka. Nearly won it with a right-foot flick from a corner which just missed the target.
