Inter overcame Juventus on penalties after their 1-1 draw in a hugely competitive opening match of the Trofeo TIM at the San Nicola in Bari.
In the first of three 45-minute encounters, Mirko Vucinic opened the scoring for Antonio Conte's outfit, but Andrea Ranocchia was quick to restore parity. It was a miss by Andrea Barzagli which eventually decided the contest from 12 yards.
The capacity crowd was stirred as early as the second minute when Walter Samuel clashed with Vucinic in the Inter area and the Montenegrin went down, but the referee deemed it an accidental collision and waved play on.
Vucinic gave Juve the lead on eight minutes though, springing Inter's offside trap 30 yards from goal before advancing to slot past goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi at the near post.
After Joel Obi had forced a good save from Marco Storari, Juve countered and should arguably have doubled their lead, but Milos Krasic flashed his shot wide.
Gian Piero Gasperini's side were back on terms on 16 minutes later as Ranocchia got in front of former Bari team-mate Leonardo Bonucci to head home from Wesley Sneijder's corner.
The Turin side could have regained the lead had they not squandered a six on three break, while Ranocchia fluffed the chance to head in an almost identical chance to his goal as the game headed for a penalty shoot out.
Cristian Pasquato hit the bar with Juve's second kick, but Goran Pandev immediately had his effort saved by Storari as the contest went to sudden death. Barzagli then became the second player to hit the bar with his side's seventh kick to settle it in Inter's favour.
Inter take two points for the spot-kick win, meanwhile Juve are sitting on one point going into their game two clash with AC Milan, with a Milan derby rounding things off at around 23:00 CET.
