Everton lost 1-0 to Philadelphia Union in a pre-season friendly at PPL Park, with Christian Hernandez scoring a late goal for the MLS side.

The youngster proved to be the difference between the two teams as he broke the deadlock in the 87th minute.

Tim Cahill started for the Toffees after beginning on the bench in the 4-1 victory over Bury last week, while defenders Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka were also handed starts after featuring for 45 minutes during the win at Gigg Lane.

Jan Mucha began in goal for David Moyes' men, with keeper Tim Howard having not joined his team-mates for pre-season training yet after featuring in the Gold Cup for the USA.

Union boss Piotr Nowak decided to rest striker Sebastien Le Toux, while defender Danny Califf did not play any part.

Keon Daniel sent in a cross 10 minutes into the game that saw striker Danny Mwanga send a header towards goal, but Mucha was equal to it.

And after 20 minutes, Jermaine Beckford was fouled just outside the area. Mikel Arteta stepped up to take the free kick, and his curling effort beat the wall but went just wide.

At the other end, Justin Mapp managed to send in a low shot, but Mucha produced an excellent save to deny the midfielder.

Within minutes, Arteta played Beckford through with a brilliantly flighted pass with the outside of his boot, but the forward was unable to make the most of the situation as his shot went wide.

Carlos Valdes came close to breaking the deadlock just before half-time when a corner came his way, but his volley flew just wide of the far post.

Greek youngster Apostolos Vellios came on after the break in place in Beckford and made his presence felt with a shot from 35 yards out, but it failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

But with only three minutes left to go, 17-year-old Hernandez sent in a left-footed shot that beat the goalkeeper after the defence failed to clear in time.

As the Toffees trailed with barely any time left, Heitinga took down Jim McLaughlin and received a second booking before being given his marching orders. The Dutchman appeared to be furious with the decision, despite both bookings coming within a span of 10 minutes for two separate tackles on the same player.

Everton, who managed just one shot on target in the match, failed to launch a late comeback in the latest match of their pre-season tour.
