Thibaut Courtois Flop of the Match

Produced a great fingertip save from Xavi's free-kick in the first half, but was then caught out of position for Alves' opener, before being caught cold in the second half by Messi's quickly taken free-kick as Barcelona took the lead late on.

  • Diego Godín

    Diego Godín

Drawn into committing a silly foul on Alexis that resulted in a yellow card after 24 minutes. Headed wide from Turan's corner on the half hour mark. Could do nothing about either of Barcelona's goals, the first a well-worked team move, and the second a moment of Messi magic.

  • Filipe Luis

    3.50

    Filipe Luis

Showed brilliant awareness to head over his own bar as Alexis looked certain to score in the second half. A competent performance from the Atletico defender.

  • Juanfran

    35
    3.00

    Juanfran

Lashed out at Messi and received a yellow card and then failed to track Fabregas' run as the Spanish international got the assist for Barca's opener. Provided little threat going forward.

  • Miranda
    26
    24
    2.50

    Miranda

He did well to stop Fabregas from bursting into the area on 10 minutes, but could do nothing to stop Barca's well-worked goal later on in the half or Messi's free-kick late on. Dominant in the air throughout.

  • Tiago

    3.00

    Tiago

Went about his job quietly but was a key figure this evening as Atletico frustrated their more illustrious opponents for large chunks of the game. Never shying away from a challenge, the Portuguese midfielder put in a gutsy performance in midfield.

  • Arda Turan
    66

    Arda Turan

Was given a yellow card for a rash challenge on Fabregas in the opening 45 minutes. He looked to get to the byeline on a number of occasions but was met by some resolute defending from Dani Alves. Also did well defensively particularly when he put in a fine sliding challenge on Alves in the second half as Barca threatened to attack.

  • Gabi
    30
    13
    2.50

    Gabi

Worked tirelessly for the Atletico cause, putting in a series of well-executed challenges in the centre of the pitch. Got the assist for Atletico's equaliser, with a well-taken outswinging corner.

  • Koke
    27
    18
    2.50

    Koke

The youngster was impressive throughout and put in a tireless performance that you would associate with a far more experienced player. Mixed some decent defensive play with some intelligent passing and forward runs. Replaced by Salvio as Atletico threw men forward late on.

  • Adrián
    28
    25
    3.00

    Adrián

Full of direct running, the young forward tried to pin Alves back, without much success. Stretched the Barca back line in the second half as Atleti went in search of a second goal.

  • Radamel Falcao
    145
    13
    3.50

    Radamel Falcao

Pulled back for offside after being put through by Adrian early on in what was a tight decision. The Colombian star scored Atletico's equaliser minutes into the second half with a fine, opportunistic volley at the back post that gave Valdes no chance. Caused Puyol and Mascherano problems in the second half.

Substitutions

  • Silvio

    Silvio

The full-back was brought on to replace the tiring Turan as Atletico fought to come back into the game after Messi's fine free-kick. Little time to make an impact.

  • Toto Salvio
    23
    16
    2.50

    Toto Salvio

Replaced the impressive Koke on 76 minutes as Diego Simeone threw men forward late on but had no impact on the game as Barca emerged victorious.

  • Víctor Valdés

    58
    4.00

    Víctor Valdés

Rushed out of goal to block at the feet of Falcao when Atleti looked to force their way back into the game at the end of the first half. Could do little to keep out Falcao's well-struck equalising goal. Did superbly to make himself big and block Falcao's lobbed effort after the Colombian had gone through one-on-one against him after 70 minutes.

  • Daniel Alves
    178
    47
    3.50

    Daniel Alves

Put in some decent tackles on Adrian and Turan as both looked to threaten down Atletico's left. The Brazilian then scored Barca's opener, arriving at the right time in the penalty area to convert Fabregas' well-weighted cross with Courtois caught out of position. A rampaging performance from the full-back before his removal after 72 minutes.

  • Carles Puyol
    112
    37
    3.00

    Carles Puyol

Confident at the back in the first half, but began to struggle in the second as Falcao began to see more and more of the ball as Atletico threw men forward.

  • Éric Abidal
    120
    30
    3.00

    Éric Abidal

Read the game well throughout, aware of the threat posed by Juanfran down Atleti's right-hand side. Coolly headed the ball back to Valdes on the hour mark when under pressure from Adrian as Atletico looked to take a surprise lead.

  • Cesc Fàbregas
    126
    54
    3.50

    Cesc Fàbregas

Blocked by Miranda when threatening to go clean through on 10 minutes. Got the assist for Alves' first goal with a perfectly weighted cross to the back post, that left Alves with little more to do than divert the ball goalwards. Hacked Juanfran down at the end of the first half, and received a deserving booking.

  • Xavi
    121
    37
    3.00

    Xavi

Shot wide early on with a well-struck daisy cutter after being teed up by Lionel Messi. Was quiet yet effective alongside his international team-mates Iniesta and Busquets in the centre of the park.

  • Andrés Iniesta Luján
    136
    37
    3.00

    Andrés Iniesta Luján

Tidy on the ball as always, and alongside Xavi and Busquets appeared to have a monopoly of the football, particularly in the first half when his side had 76 per cent of possession despite being the away team.

  • Javier Mascherano
    123
    38
    3.00

    Javier Mascherano

Alongside Carles Puyol in the centre of the Barcelona defence he dealt fairly well with the aerial threat posed by Adrian and Falcao, although he will have been disappointed that Atletico's equalising goal came from a corner that was dispatched by Falcao.

  • Busquets
    107
    96
    2.50

    Busquets

Customary diving around on the floor, mixed with some metronomic passing and reading of play. Inadvertently flicked the ball into the path of Falcao, when the Colombian equalised for the home side. A case of misfortune rather than poor play from the midfielder. Lucky to escape punishment for a handball late on.

  • Alexis Sánchez
    141
    49
    3.00

    Alexis Sánchez

Did brilliantly midway through the first half to draw a foul and yellow card from Diego Godin courtesy of a wonderful pirouette. Headed wide on 67 minutes after a searching ball from the right from Alves found him free at the back post. His impact was limited by some bullish defending from the home side.

  • Messi

    Messi Top of the Match

Had a goal correctly disallowed on eight minutes, after using his hand to control the ball in the build up. He was superb in the build up to Alves' goal, dribbling past a couple of players before playing the ball out to Fabregas who provided the assist for Alves. Although he got booked in the first half meaning he will mist Barca's next game against Sporting, he proved the difference here, scoring a fabulous free-kick in the 81st minute to give Barcelona the lead, curling the ball into the top corner from the left with Courtois caught stranded.

Substitutions

Brought on to shore up Barcelona's defence after Messi had given his side the lead with just minutes to go in the second half.

  • Pedro

    Pedro

Replaced Fabregas late on as Guardiola looked for more penetration upfront from his side.

  • Cuenca

    Cuenca

Brought on with 20 minutes to go as Barca went in search of a winner. Full of running.
