Malaga recorded a 2-1 win, their first Andalusian derby victory over Sevilla at La Rosaleda in seven years, lifting them above their neighbours in La Liga standings.

The home side deservedly took the lead when Weligton headed home Santi Cazorla's cross, and Malaga passed up the opportunity to double their advantage. Unexpectedly, Luna drew los Rojiblancos level with their first meaningful attack but Malaga restored their lead just three minutes later when Sebastian Fernandez bundled the ball home from close range.

Despite Isco's red card 10 minutes from time the home side clung onto an historic victory, and one which will engulf the region for some time.

In a flying start to the tie, Rondon guided Monreal's cross onto the woodwork with a beautiful flick of the outside of his boot as Manuel Pellegrini's side began with a high tempo.

The Costa del Sol-based outfit continued their intensity as they looked to profit from their supremacy in the early stages. They were duly rewarded when the returning Weligton powered a header past Javi Varas to put Malaga ahead.

Sevilla continued to be punished by the home side, but the visitors momentarily stunned La Rosaleda when they drew level. Alvaro Negredo was aware enough to dummy a low cross which Luna took up, the Spaniard in unfamiliar territory forced Willy Caballero into a smart save before prodding home his first-ever Sevilla goal on the second attempt.

Pellegrini's side rallied and resumed their authoritative status three minutes after Luna's equaliser. Rondon timed his run perfectly before checking the ball back, finding Fernandez faced with an open goal. Initially, the Uruguayan mistimed his effort but despite Sevilla defenders closing in on him he was able to squeeze the ball home.

Malaga returned for the second half with the same eagerness they had shown before the break and should have extended their lead a minute after the restart. Rondon dug a cross out to the far post but Javi Varas spread himself well to deny Isco from point blank range.

As the match entered the final 15 minutes Sevilla began to assert themselves on the front foot as they searched for an equaliser and their chances increased when Isco's lunge earned himself a red card.

Sevilla thought they had dramatically levelled with seven minutes remaining when Coke's stooped header nestled in the net only for the offside flag to be raised denying los Rojiblanocs.

Malaga ended the match entrenched deep in their own territory but were able to hold on as they managed to move up to seventh. Conversely, their opponents remain without a win in six matches, dropping into the bottom half of the standings.
