Levante 1-0 Sevilla: Nano goal helps Valencia-based club move five points clear in fourth spot in La Liga

Juan Ignacio Martinez's side ended the hosts winless streak against the visiting Rojiblancos on Saturday afternoon, continuing their best-ever start to a Liga campaign

Levante recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over Sevilla at the Ciutat de Valencia after a resolute defensive display helped them move further ahead of their rivals in the Liga table.

Juan Ignacio Martinez's side registered their first victory over Sevilla in 10 games thanks to Nano's decisive strike early in the second half to continue their best start to a Liga campaign which has seen them amount 29 points from their first 15 matches.

In an uninspiring first half, the chances were limited for both teams as the match was increasingly played in the middle third of the pitch.

Despite surrendering the majority of possession to the home side, Sevilla looked the most likely to open the scoring and could have been ahead but Alvaro Negredo's mazy run led to the striker narrowly shooting wide.

Piotr Trochowski spurned two opportunities in quick succession for los Rojiblancos, after Arouna Kone had passed up Levante's best chance of the half. The striker failed to bring a chipped pass under control, which would have left the Ivorian one-on-one.

Six minutes into the second-half, Gustavo Munua was stretched for the first time when Manu del Moral crashed an effort towards goal which the keeper pushed away, but only as far as Negredo. The striker was able to find Trochowski six yards from goal but the former Hamburg man saw his shot instinctively saved.

Levante's response was immediate, courtesy of Nano's toe-poke finish. Confusion erupted in Sevilla's penalty area as they failed to clear Juanlu's corner, and the defender was on hand to capitalise and put the Valencia-based side ahead.

Moments after Frederic Kanoute wasted a chance to level the match, Levante launched a counterattack which ended in Javi Varas watching helplessly as Juanlu's deflected cross struck the upright before bouncing behind for a corner kick.

Both sides had chances to score a late goal but Levante were able to hold onto their ninth win of the season which moves them to  to within a point of Valencia having played a game more, whilst Sevilla are just a point ahead of Malaga who can leap frog Marcelino's side with a win over Osasuna.

Sevilla host Real Madrid next, with Levante up against Granada.
