Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 Bordeaux: Hoarau rescues point but Ancelotti's side remain behind Montpellier in Ligue 1 standings

Carlo Ancelotti’s side once again showed their character, but they’ll have been disappointed not to have picked up three points against their stubborn guests

Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 title challenge took a major hit as they were held 1-1 at home by Girondins de Bordeaux.

Although the home side enjoyed much of the ball, the better chances were created by their guests, and with quarter of an hour remaining they struck the opening goal of the game through Cheick Diabate. PSG responded quickly, with Hoarau finishing well after Mathieu Bodmer played him in with an inspirational flick.

Bordeaux were arguably the more impressive offensive unit during a dull first half, with Benoit Tremoulinas offering their chief threat. It was a burst from the left-sided player that brought their best opportunity of the first period, getting to the byeline before cutting a pass back for Jaroslav Plasil, whose side-footed effort was well saved by Salvatore Sirigu.

At the other end of the park, Cedric Carrasso was underemployed. Indeed, PSG failed to muster a good effort on target for the duration of the first period. A Nene free kick picked out the head of Alex, but the defender was unable to steer his effort on target when a goal looked probable.

Too much of PSG’s play throughout was laboured, but for a brief period at the beginning of the second half they were slicker and more incisive. Momo Sissoko worked Carrasso with a shot from the edge of the penalty box, while a stinging Nene free kick was clutched at the second attempt by the visiting goalkeeper.

Hoarau then perhaps should have done better when left unmarked to head over the top after good work from Christophe Jallet down the right flank.

With 20 minutes remaining, the home side were given a real wake-up call when Mamadou Sakho made an error that resulted in Plasil smacking the bar with a wonderful curling effort. A scramble ensued, and the hosts only just survived.

The opening goal was not long in coming. Ludovic Obraniak’s pass split the defence, allowing Nicolas Maurice-Belay to square for Diabate to tap into an empty net.

PSG replied swiftly, with substitute Bodmer brilliantly releasing Hoarau with a terrific backheel, and the striker blasting home.

Diabate then drew an outstanding save from Sirigu with a turn and shot from close range, but there was to be no winner in this dramatic encounter, stalling Bordeaux’s European push and crucially leaving PSG only second in Ligue 1, trailing Montpellier at the summit of the table by goal difference.
