Bayern Munich 0-0 Mainz: Bavarians fall eight points behind Dortmund after draw with Oh-Fives

Jupp Heynckes' men now face the nearly impossible task of catching the defending Bundesliga champions at the top of the table after a goalless stalemate with Thomas Tuchel's side

Bayern Munich's league title aspirations were dealt a decisive blow after the Bavarians were held to a 0-0 draw by Mainz at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.

Jupp Heynckes decided to rest a string of his key players ahead of the Champions League semi-final clash with Real Madrid on Tuesday. Bayern clearly lacked urgency, failing to break down Mainz' defence as the Bundesliga title is now just a mere mathematical possibility.

The game got off to a slow start as both teams looked disinterested in sending bodies forward in the early minutes. Despite their possession and territorial dominance, Bayern were unable to create chances in front of goal.

The visitors were unable to carve out any opportunities either as Andreas Ivanschitz twice tried to test Manuel Neuer from range, but on both occasions failed to trouble the goalkeeper as he first sent a piledriver over the bar and then blasted a free kick right into the wall.

Bayern started to build momentum as half-time drew closer, with Rafinha sending a low shot just wide of the post. In a rare Mainz counterattack Adam Szalai was presented with a good chance to test Neuer, but the Hungarian blasted the ball over the bar.

Shortly after, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk sent a thunderous low drive from long-range, which cannoned off the left post before it was cleared by the Mainz defence. A minute later Ivica Olic was released through on goal for a one-on-one with Heinz Muller, but could not put the ball past the goalkeeper.

The second period saw Bayern continue to dominate proceedings with Tymoshchuk once again going close with a fine strike from range. Chances were hard to come by in front of the Mainz goal as the Bavarians looked increasingly frustrated.

Mario Gomez was introduced on the hour mark, and he nearly made an instant impact as he was released by Arjen Robben, but blasted his volley from near the penalty spot over the bar.

Toni Kroos then had a crashing drive saved by Muller in the closing minutes of the match in what proved to be the final moment of interest in the game.

Following the result, Bayern are now eight points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund in second, while Mainz are 12th with 37 points. The Bavarians' next league game is a visit to Werder Bremen on April 21, while the Oh-Fives host Wolfsburg a day earlier.
