    Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Some have tipped him to be as great as Neuer, and the 19-year-old rose to the occasion tonight. His denial of Gomez in the early minutes was world class, and he kept his composure afterwards. Was caught in no-man's land once, but can thank his defence for bailing him out.

  • Filip Daems

    Filip Daems

An inspired performance from the veteran, who kept Robben from doing the spectacular. Though he saw little of the ball, he made his moments count.

  • Roel Brouwers

    Roel Brouwers

Much was required of the man brought in to replace the suspended Dante, and Brouwers indeed had a fantastic game. Tracked Gomez very, very well; on the few occasions the striker did find himself with space to shoot, he closed it down quickly to block the attempt.

  • Tony Jantschke

    Tony Jantschke

Has in the past been criticised for neglecting his defensive duties, but did well enough to keep Kroos, and later Alaba, from cutting to the inside. A useful outlet in attack as well.

  • Martin Stranzl

    Martin Stranzl

Less spectacular than Brouwers, but equally effective in defence: the pair formed an outstanding partnership: Dante was not at all missed.

  • Marco Reus

    4.00

    Marco Reus

In the right place at the right time to score the simplest of openers into an unguarded net, but was relatively quiet for long spells. Showed a touch of absolutely immense class, though, as he played a wondrous through-ball to assist Herrmann's strike to make it 3-0.

  • Roman Neustädter
    37

    3.00

    Roman Neustädter

Had a couple chances for glory, but was lacking any amount of sharpness in the pass. Defended very well, however, and that is all that truly mattered in Lucien Favre's system.

  • Havard Nordtveit

    Havard Nordtveit

Aggressively engaged his opponents and covered an incredible amount of ground, winning back possession all over the pitch.

  • Juan Fernando Arango

    Juan Fernando Arango

A rather quiet game for the Venezuelan, who had one corkscrewing shot sail wide, and otherwise spent most of his time helping Daems in defence. Won the ball off Robben ahead of Herrmann's first goal.

  • Patrick Herrmann

Patrick Herrmann Top of the Match

Man of the match. Always a threat on the counterattack, the youngster finally broke through on 41 minutes and scored a morale-killing second goal. Made it 3-0 late with a goal that looked simple, but showcased his intelligence in making all the right runs against a defence that was ill-prepared. Reus will be gone next season, but Gladbach have a good replacement growing into his boots.

  • Mike Hanke
    65
    2
    3.50

    Mike Hanke

Useful as an outlet to one-touch pass out to the wings, but had a moment of pure class as his immaculate through ball assisted Herrmann's goal. His movement caused trouble for Bayern: like Miroslav Klose, he proves that scoring ability is just one of several attributes a striker can find useful.

Like Marx, was given a few moments and could make no impact of note.

  • Igor De Camargo

    Igor De Camargo

Replaced Hanke for the final eight minutes, but contributed to no late drama.

  • Manuel Neuer

    Manuel Neuer

Guilty of, for the second time this season, gifting a goal to Gladbach. He cannot be blamed for the second or third, but the first is always the most critical, and the Germany No. 1 made a terrible mistake.

  • Daniel Van Buyten
    24
    40
    2.50

    Daniel Van Buyten

Strong in the air, yes, but not at all suited for Gladbach's style, which revolves around passing on the ground and free-moving forwards. He was fortunate that his lack of pace was not particularly exposed on the day, but nonetheless was guilty of a very cheap giveaway late in the first half that left a large opening at the back.

  • Jerome Boateng
    36
    34
    2.50

    Jerome Boateng

Cannot take the blame for any of the goals, and played one fine through pass early on. However, when Bayern grew desperate, he was replaced as Rafinha was brought on to add attacking quality.

  • Philipp Lahm
    37
    97
    2.50

Philipp Lahm Flop of the Match

Herrmann was his man to mark, but the captain did not react to the youngster's runs for the second and third goals, even though it was quite clear that Badstuber was not in a position to support. Came close to pulling a goal back, but his primary responsibility was to defend, and was found lacking in that regard.

  • Holger Badstuber
    26
    39
    3.00

    Holger Badstuber

Obviously not responsible for the opener, but perhaps a little naive to assume Lahm would cover Herrmann for Gladbach's second goal. Showed his inexperience as he struggled more than Van Buyten against an unconventional attack.

  • Arjen Robben
    30
    49
    2.50

    Arjen Robben

Played a great cross to Gomez that should have produced a goal, but was otherwise largely lacking in ideas. Can take some blame for Herrmann's goal for hoping for the whistle and not harrying Arango after losing possession.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger
    50
    34
    3.00

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Scored, but it was a very opportunistic goal and did little to hide what was an overall poor performance. Guilty of losing the ball too easily on multiple occasions, either with a poor touch or a wayward pass. Needs some time to find his form once more.

  • Toni Kroos
    44
    25
    3.00

    Toni Kroos

Rather out of place on the left wing, the youngster played one good ball over the top to Muller and forced a fine save with a shot from distance, but was crying to be used in a central position.

  • Anatoliy Tymoshchuk
    20
    34
    2.50

    Anatoliy Tymoshchuk

Not particularly convincing in helping quash the Gladbach counterattack, but his role became unnecessary after the hosts went 2-0 ahead. Sacrificed on 57 minutes as Heynckes brought on the attack-minded Alaba.

  • Thomas Müller
    31
    37
    2.50

    Thomas Müller

Ran and ran and ran, but was still unable to make a difference as his poor form from the first half of the season carried over. Had a chance to make a difference on 52 minutes, but his first touch sent the ball looping through the air and into Ter Stegen's arms.

  • Mario Gomez
    29
    47
    2.00

    Mario Gomez

Had his work cut out against a tight Gladbach defence, but as always, found his chance. Was very unlucky to be denied by Ter Stegen on 14 minutes, and never gave up. Could have had two or more goals, but Brouwers made some brilliant challenges to deny him.

Substitutions

  • Rafinha
    24
    27
    2.50

    Rafinha

Came off the bench to add attacking quality, but the first time he received the ball, allowed himself to be tackled and gave away a counterattacking chance. Added nothing more going forward than Boateng.

  • David Alaba
    38
    18
    3.00

    David Alaba

Brought on for the final 33 minutes, the Austrian added width to the left, but none of his crosses came to fruition.

  • Luiz Gustavo
    37
    16
    2.50

    Luiz Gustavo

Replaced the injured Van Buyten in the closing minutes and made no mistakes of note. Much more mobile than his predecessor.
