    Christian Wetklo

Had no chance for both goals by Daniel Van Buyten, but sill impressed with some very good saves. Most importantly, he managed to tip a free-kick by Badstuber onto the bar in the first half, saving his team from a certain goal.

  • Niko Bungert

    Niko Bungert

More than redeemed himself for his mistake for Van Buyten's first goal with a strike of his own. Was a bit slow at times and had his fair share of troubles with Ribery in the first period, but improved greatly after the break, finishing the game on a high note.

  • Bo Svensson

    Bo Svensson

Did very well to contain Mario Gomez, and was a very reliable at the back. Showed great positioning and superb organisational skill in defence.

    Zdenek Pospech

Was Mainz's weak link at the back for a big part of the game. Had to be helped on a lot of occasions, which sometimes resulted in the Oh-Fives conceding free-kicks in very dangerous positions. A no-show in attack.

  • Malik Fathi

    Malik Fathi

The experienced defender had a great game against Muller, neutralising the Germany international. Showed great positioning and even found time to charge forward on a couple of occasions.

  • Elkin Soto

    Elkin Soto

The Colombian had a very good game in the centre of the pitch, distributing the ball superbly and fighting for every inch. Most notably, he created a sublime chance for Ivanschitz in the first period, but the Austrian blasted over the bar.

  • Andreas Ivanschitz

    Andreas Ivanschitz

Started unconvincingly, but stepped up his game as the match progressed. Showed great composure to net the opener, and good technique to create Bungert's goal.

  • Marco Caligiuri

    Marco Caligiuri

The midfielder showed there is more to his game than just physical aspects as he netted a stunning goal to peg Bayern Munich back. Ran a lot, and put in a lot of effort, on top of all he showed neat passing as well.

  • Nicolai Müller

    Nicolai Müller

Did very well to turn Luiz Gustavo and create the opener, and generally had a lively game. Looked threatening in attack, but his influence started to wane as the match progressed.

  • Julian Baumgartlinger

    3.50

    Julian Baumgartlinger

Was a vital component in Mainz's plan as he contributed superbly in defence, and was a calming influence with his simple passing. His needless yellow card is the only black spot in his performance.

Time-wasting substitution for Thomas Tuchel's men.

    Manuel Neuer

The goalkeeper had a disappointing game as he let in a goal that condemned Bayern Munich to a defeat in the end. Should have done far better for Caligiuri's strike, and looked indecisive on a couple of occasions.

  • Philipp Lahm
    45
    14
    3.00

    Philipp Lahm

The captain had a solid game all round as he made some crucial interventions at the back with his block on Muller in the first period a highlight. Had somewhat limited influence in the final third, but all in all did well.

  • Daniel Van Buyten

Daniel Van Buyten Top of the Match

An absolute masterclass by the Belgium international, who is quickly becoming one of Bayern Munich's best defenders. Was a tower of power in the air, and timed his tackles superbly. Almost managed to prevent Bungert's strike as he tried to correct Muller's mistake, but to no avail. On top of all he scored two goals in a memorable performance.

  • Holger Badstuber
    34
    26
    2.00

    Holger Badstuber

The Germany international had an abysmal game as he constantly committed petty, needless fouls and lacked the concentration needed to deal with Mainz's vibrant attack. Spent most of the time complaining, and generally looked susceptible at the back.

  • Jerome Boateng
    44
    19
    2.50

    Jerome Boateng

The ex-Manchester City defender had a decent game at the back, and was an useful outlet in attack as well. Whipped in some great crosses, and aside from a few minor lapses, barely put a foot wrong.

  • Luiz Gustavo Dias
    25
    27
    1.50

    Luiz Gustavo Dias

The Brazilian had a bad start to the game, conceding possession on quite a few occasions, including in the situation that led to the opener. Improved as the game progressed, but still was below his usual best.

  • Toni Kroos
    99
    12
    2.50

    Toni Kroos

The midfielder had a very good game, distributing the ball well, and constantly harassing Mainz' defence with his intelligent runs and movement. Assisted both of Bayern Munich's goals with two delightful deliveries.

  • Franck Ribéry
    30
    32
    2.00

    Franck Ribéry

The Frenchman looked very dangerous in the first half, giving Prospech a nightmare on the flank, but completely fumbled after the break. Looked isolated in the second period, and lacked his occasional spark.

  • D. Alaba
    31
    36
    2.50

    D. Alaba

The youngster was not up to the challenge as he was outplayed at the centre of the pitch by the more experienced Soto and Baumgartlinger. Saw precious little of the ball, and spent most of his time chasing it hopelessly.

  • Thomas Müller
    51
    47
    2.00

Thomas Müller Flop of the Match

The attacker had an awful game as he was a complete no-show in attack, wasting possession and misplacing passes. Had to mark Bungert for the third goal by Mainz, but failed miserably.

  • Mario Gomez
    42
    30
    2.00

    Mario Gomez

The striker surprisingly saw very little of the ball, but looked impressive in possession. Created a great chance for Ribery in the first half with some great dribbling and could feel hard done as he was stopped by the referee with only the goalkeeper to beat in the 81st minute. Nearly forced an equaliser in the last second of the match as he battled with three players in the box.

Substitutions

  • Rafinha
    36
    11
    2.00

    Rafinha

Almost made instant impact as he floated a great ball for Gomez, but the striker headed narrowly wide in the 71st minute.

  • Ivica Olic
    36
    20
    2.00

    Ivica Olic

The Croatian had a decent cameo as he showed some decent touches, but ultimately failed to deliver a goal for the Bavarians.
