Goal.com assesses the individuals who featured in the hosts' triumph in the Bavarian derby

    Manuel Neuer

Was so untroubled that in order to make any real impact on the game, he cheekily chipped the onrushing Pekhart late in the first half. However, he was forced into action after the break, and made two outstanding stops from Pekhart. Never loses his focus, which is often difficult for a player who so rarely is put under pressure.

    Daniel Van Buyten

Bayern quite clearly missed him last week. In his return, the Belgian was absolutely dominant in defence. Nearly assisted Gomez, too, with a very well-played ball.

  • Rafinha

    Rafinha

Better defensively than he was in the Hannover loss, the Brazilian right-back offered good support in possession but did not over-commit in attack as he often has in the past.

  • Philipp Lahm

    Philipp Lahm

His cutting run unravelled the Nurnberg defence ahead of Schweinsteiger's belter. Otherwise played a rather subdued role and was generally untroubled. However, he made one terrible mistake as he was turned far too easily by Hegeler early in the second half.

  • Holger Badstuber

    Holger Badstuber

Picked out Schweinsteiger with a perfect ball before the opener, and played in several other lovely passes: he completed a remarkable 100 on the day. Showed very good instincts to anticipate danger, but was beaten in the air once by Pekhart, and missed a tackle on Hegeler: both slip-ups ought to have been punished with goals.

  • Franck Ribéry

    Franck Ribéry

Not particularly dangerous for most of the first half, but scored an absolutely sublime goal to make it 3-0. Made some very clever runs and was a constant thorn in the side of the Nurnberg defence, but for the first time in recent memory, was unable to assist even a single shot.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger

Bastian Schweinsteiger Top of the Match

A stunning performance by the midfielder, who is in the form of his life. A perfect assist for the opener, then a stunning strike to make it 2-0. Completely ran the show in the centre as he acted like a magnet to the ball, winning back possession, and almost never misplacing a pass. And to think, he was suffering from the flu on Wednesday.

  • Toni Kroos

    Toni Kroos

As he so often has this season, the youngster filled in very well in a "withdrawn 10" role. Kept the ball moving in the centre, and assisted Gomez's second goal following a fine run and delivery.

  • Anatoliy Tymoshchuk

    Anatoliy Tymoshchuk

The veteran proved why he is now first choice ahead of Luiz Gustavo as he was very tidy in possession, but also showed superb defensive instincts. Always managed to wee play quickly enough to position himself to make the challenge, and accordingly, won nearly every 50-50 ball.

  • Thomas Müller

    2.50

    Thomas Müller

Linked well with his team-mates but as has become commonplace, struggled to make an impact in and around the penalty area. Had a one-on-one with Stephan, but failed to beat the goalkeeper.

  • Mario Gomez

    Mario Gomez

There were concerns that his form had dropped off as of late, but the Germany international returned to his usual prolific ways as he took just over a minute to nod in the opener. He then assisted Schweinsteiger's goal, and scored the fourth with a sumptuous finish.

Substitutions

  • D. Alaba

    D. Alaba

Given 19 minutes to try to grab his third goal in as many games, and came short. Looked bright in some runs, but did not push as he would have had Bayern needed a goal.

  • Luiz Gustavo Dias

    Luiz Gustavo Dias

Came on at a time when there was hardly anything left to do. Made no mistakes, and his contribution was about on par with that of anyone else in the final quarter hour.

  • Ivica Olic

    Ivica Olic

The want-away forward had 13 minutes to prove himself, but like Alaba, hardly had a chance.

  • Alexander Stephan

    Alexander Stephan

Cannot be blamed for any of the goals, which were the result of woeful defending or individual brilliance from the hosts' attackers. Made one very nice save from Muller late in the game.

  • Timm Klose

    11
    1.50

Timm Klose Flop of the Match

Was in no-man's land ahead of Gomez's opener, and was simply too much of a reactionary as the Bayern attack ran rampant.

  • Marvin Plattenhardt

    Marvin Plattenhardt

The youngster had few problems with Muller on his flank, although one could speculate that this was in part due to the hosts' choice. He was caught out of position once as the Germany international was able to run in free on goal.

  • Wilson Kamavuaka
    3

    2.00

    Wilson Kamavuaka

Covered more ground than any other player, and rather comfortably, but showed his inexperience as he struggled to keep up with play. Simply out-dueled in the centre of the park.

  • Timothy Chandler
    4
    6
    2.00

    Timothy Chandler

Was far too easily beaten to the ball by Lahm early on and was fortunate not to be booked for some petulant challenges. He did improve after the break when he was moved to a defensive position, but still left much to be desired.

  • Philipp Wollscheid
    3

    Philipp Wollscheid

Like Klose, the youngster was nowhere near Gomez as the striker scored the first goal. To his credit, he managed to make a key stop to clear an effort off the line. However, it was overall an underwhelming performance from the youngster, who must do better if he is to earn a contract at a bigger club.

  • Timmy Simons

    Timmy Simons

The veteran has occasionally looked behind the pace as of late, but rolled back the years as he put in a very industrious shift. His was by no means a convincing performance, but the Belgian was the least disappointing of a poor midfield trio.

  • Juri Judt
    2

    2.50

    Juri Judt

Turned again and again by Ribery, and could easily have been sent off within the first 32 minutes. The right-back was unceremoniously withdrawn at half-time, a merciful move by his coach.

  • Almog Cohen
    2
    8
    2.00

    Almog Cohen

A disappointing display from the central midfielder, who spent the game chasing shadows. Received the ball just 15 times, and was dispossessed in almost every instance.

  • Tomas Pekhart
    2

    1.50

    Tomas Pekhart

Had his chance, but an awful first touch put him off. Ran and ran and ran, and was rewarded in that he did have a few shots on goal, but none of those attempts were the type that one would expect from a top striker.

  • Alexander Esswein
    2

    Alexander Esswein

Utterly anonymous, an extremely disappointing performance from the 21-year-old, of whom so much is expected. Barely ever found himself in possession, and when he was, did nothing of note with the ball. Replaced after 71 minutes.

Substitutions

  • Jens Hegeler

    Jens Hegeler

Created the chance of the game for Nurnberg as he skinned both Lahm and Badstuber before playing in Pekhart. Deserved an assist, and was unfortunate that the chance was wasted.

  • Mike Frantz

    Mike Frantz

Assisted a near chance for Pekhart late in the game as he whipped in an excellent cross.

  • Julian Wießmeier

    Julian Wießmeier

Made an appearance as a late substitute but could have no significant impact.
