Bernd Leno Top of the Match

The young deputy put in a performance worthy of first-choice goalkeeper Rene Adler as he pulled off two tremendous second-half saves to earn a point for his team. First, he stopped a volley by Perisic in the 69th, and put the cherry on the cake with a dipping save to deny Kagawa 10 minutes later. An immense performance.

  • Ömer Toprak

    Ömer Toprak

Had a superb first half, making a pin-point intervention to deny Lewandowski in the 28th minute. Took no prisoners after the break as he tended to misjudge his tackles, and was a bit off the pace once Dortmund had the numerical advantage.

  • Michal Kadlec

Michal Kadlec Flop of the Match

The left-back was sound defensively, and an outlet in attack, before committing a completely needless, and potentially harming tackle on Gotze, which earned him a red card. He was probably affected by the referee's decision not to send off Hummels, but he still should have kept his nerves.

  • Gonzalo Castro

    Gonzalo Castro

The right back had virtually no trouble containing Schmelzer and Grosskreutz on the flank as the Dortmund pair looked like a pale image of themselves in this game. Offered fairly little in attack, and started having problems once Perisic entered the fray.

  • Stefan Reinartz

    Stefan Reinartz

Superb performance from the centre-half, who was a rock at the back for Leverkusen and forced a tremendous save by Weidenfeller with a great header. Played an exquisite pass to release Schurrle through on goal just before half-time, but the attack was flagged for offside. Won all of his challenges in this match.

  • Renato Augusto
    9
    3
    3.00

    Renato Augusto

The Brazilian had a decent game in a footballing sense, but his manners left a lot to be desired. Showed genuine Brazil magic before and after the break as he released Schurrle in the 6th minute for the best chance of the game, and went on a searing run before being stopped by Hummels in controversial circumstances just after the hour mark. Shown a yellow card for kicking the ball in frustration at half-time, and overplayed his fall in the build-up to the situation in the 64th minute..

  • Simon Rolfes

    Simon Rolfes

The midfielder put in a rather brutish performance as he committed foul after foul, but managed to up his game after the break. Not on his usual level, however.

  • Sidney Sam

    2.50

    Sidney Sam

The ex-Kaiserslautern man had an abysmal game as everything he tried never failed to come off. Took the wrong decision more often than not and failed to offer any threat down the flank.

  • Lars Bender
    4
    5
    2.50

    Lars Bender

The midfielder threaded a few fine balls in this match, but generally struggled to impose himself. Lost most of his challenges and failed to dictate play.

  • Stefan Kießling

    3
    3.00

    Stefan Kießling

The striker did not receive much service, but did his utmost to hassle Dortmund's defence on every occasions. Had a few good shots and goal, and showed great work-rate.

  • Andre Schürrle
    23
    2
    3.50

    Andre Schürrle

Missed the best chance of the game in the 6th minute, but stepped up his play immensely after the break as Dortmund's defence trembled whenever he was on the ball. Showed explosive pace and superb dribbling, and is set to become Leverkusen's focal point in attack in the future.

Substitutions

    Hanno Balitsch

The make-shift defender had a stable game after Kadlec's sending off, and even managed to get a red card for Gotze.

  • Roman Weidenfeller

    3.50

    Roman Weidenfeller

The goalkeeper had a tremendous game, producing two fine saves to deny Schurrle and Reinartz in the first half to keep his team in the game. Controlled his area superbly and had no trouble in the air.

  • Neven Subotic
    18

    2.50

    Neven Subotic

The Serbian had a decent game, and tried to keep things simple at the back. Unflappable in the air, and confident on the ground, Subotic seems to have finally fitted in the side after his long injury spell.

  • Mats Hummels
    13
    12
    3.50

    Mats Hummels

Allowed Rolfes a free-header early in the game, but was generally superb until the 64th minute, when he should have been sent off for a scything tackle on Renato Augusto. Had a goal disallowed in the 83rd minute.

  • Lukasz Piszczek
    34
    2
    3.00

    Lukasz Piszczek

The Polish defender had some troubles in the second half whenever Schurrle drifted to his wing, but generally did well in defence. Joined the attacks well, but his performance in the final third was below his level in this game.

  • Marcel Schmelzer
    7
    8
    3.00

    Marcel Schmelzer

The left-back looked clumsy and inept going forward and it seems like his spell on the sidelines is still affecting him. Offered virtually nothing in attack in this game, and was bypassed easily by Schurrle all game.

  • Kevin Großkreutz
    12
    8
    2.00

    Kevin Großkreutz

One could hardly tell if he was on the pitch. Made 20 touches of the ball, and lost all but one of his challenges. A very poor performance by the attacker.

  • Sven Bender
    8
    7
    2.50

    Sven Bender

Facing his twin brother, the midfielder failed to exert himself in the centre of the pitch. Decent in defence, but non-existent in attack in this game.

  • Ilkay Gündogan
    11
    16
    3.00

    Ilkay Gündogan

Once again failed to provide the spark needed to get the Dortmund engine firing. Sub-par in defensive sense, and lacking inventiveness in attack, signs are out that he might not be able to fill the void left by Nuri Sahin.

  • Mario Götze
    20
    25
    2.50

    Mario Götze

The attacker was starved off service in this game, and generally struggled to make an impact. Sent off for a needless challenge, this will be a match he would like to forget.

  • Robert Lewandowski
    71
    2
    2.00

    Robert Lewandowski

Tried his hardest tonight, and delivered a good performance. Drew defenders, freed up space for others, and even threaded a trademark backheel for Kagawa in the 62nd minute. An efficient performance, despite not getting any service.

  • Shinji Kagawa
    21
    8
    3.00

    Shinji Kagawa

The Japanese drifted in an out of the game, and generally failed to impose himself. Threaded a few good balls, but his final ball left a lot to be desired. Had a good chance to win the game for his team in the 77th minute, but Bernd Leno pulled off a tremendous save.

Substitutions

  • Ivan Perisic

    6
    3.00

    Ivan Perisic

The substitute almost made impact immediately after coming on as he forced an immense save from Leno with a volley in the 69th minute. He later won the free-kick that led to Hummels' disallowed goal with some smart play. Looked threatening whenever on the ball.

  • Jakub Blaszczykowski

    Jakub Blaszczykowski

Late substitution for Dortmund. Failed to offer much of a threat upfront.
