    Tom Starke

The Hoffenheim goalkeeper kept Kevin Grosskreutz at bay in the first-half with two good stops as Dortmund looked for the equaliser. Sometimes his distribution was not the greatest but he did his primary job between the sticks.

  • Edson Braafheid

    Edson Braafheid

Very assured at left-back when faced with the ever-increasing threat of Piszczek as the first-half wore on. He looked in control defensively and stuck to that brief, rarely venturing forwards. Did well to snuff out the threat of Kuba with his imposing figure.

  • Marvin Compper

    Marvin Compper

Good anticipation, came across to snuff out the danger, never panicking and keeping his cool under pressure. Together with Vorsah formed an excellent partnership today, as they dealt with most things which came their way.

  • Isaac Vorsah

Isaac Vorsah Top of the Match

Had an excellent game and was as solid as a rock even once he had erred. His positioning was first-class to read balls into the box and head them away. Even when he was caught in his own area, he recovered with a superb tackle on Kagawa. Mopped up everything when Dortmund came again resurgent in the second half and was a defensive colossus.

  • Andreas Beck

    Andreas Beck

Hoffenheim's skipper had a mixed time of things, his positioning was excellent and Dortmund had little wide threat down the left. However, he also had trouble with Gotze's quick feet and Perisic's dynamic infield running but nevertheless still a decent game.

  • Fabian Johnson

    Fabian Johnson

The former Wolfsburg man was relatively quiet save an opening shot which was blocked but thereafter he struggled to make an impact on a game, which passed him by as others played a prominent role.

  • Sebastian Rudy

    Sebastian Rudy

Operating in the heart of midfield, he raised his game for the champions. He was bright, alert and quick to spot any space. He was snappy and decisive in the tackle and furthermore, when the chance presented itself, dinked in a couple of excellent balls over the top of the Dortmund defence.

  • Roberto Firmino

    Roberto Firmino

Struck the crossbar with a venomous shot and was lively in behind the striker as Hoffenheim rotated the front players. Never afraid to try his luck on goal, he again came close in the second half when he was denied by Weidenfeller though he would like to play a greater creative role in subsequent matches.

  • Sejad Salihovic

    Sejad Salihovic

Lit up the game with a quite stunning free-kick beyond Weidenfeller, which no keeper would have kept out. And but for giving up the ghost rather easily on one occasion, he stuck to his defensive duties remarkably well and provided great support for his captain Beck.

  • Ryan Babel

    Ryan Babel

Nominally the lone striker upfront, he moved into the channels and while not creating a great deal, he linked up reasonably well with his team-mates. Has the makings of a good rapport with Obasi.

  • Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi

    Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi

Had his moments in the first-half but while he could find space with his speed and movement, his final ball was lacking as was his decision making.

The youngster came on and almost put the game to bed with a low shot the wrong side of the post. Did not look overawed by the occasion.

    Peniel Kokou Mlapa

He made a useful contribution coming on with his energy and speed down the right as well as his ability to win the ball high up the pitch.

    Sven Schipplock

The former Stuttgart man operated deeper than we are used to seeing him and his crossing ability, or lack of it, came to the fore but he took up some good positions and provided useful support for Obasi and Babel.

  • Roman Weidenfeller

    Roman Weidenfeller

The Dortmund stand-in captain could not be faulted for the goal, which was a magnificent strike. He was rarely tested otherwise, though pulled off an important stop at his near post to deny Firmino in the second half.

  • Chris Löwe

    Chris Löwe

He proved once again that he is an able deputy for Marcel Schmelzer. Composed in defence, he took up excellent positions and ensured very few crosses came into the box down his flank.

  • Mats Hummels

    Mats Hummels

Consistency personified - another fine display from arguably the best defender in the league. He was ruthless when he needed to be, read the game well and was dominant in the challenge.

  • Felipe Santana

    Felipe Santana

The Brazilian does not deserve to be a backup player and today he displayed his qualities. He made countless blocks to help out his side and read the game well to intercept through balls. His only black mark was being caught in possession on one occasion.

  • Lukasz Piszczek

    Lukasz Piszczek

Full credit to the right-back, he kept bombing forward all day long as he sought to haul Dortmund back into the game. He made more crosses than anyone in the match and that was in spite of coming up against Edson Braafheid in form.

  • Kevin Großkreutz

    Kevin Großkreutz

A frustrating day for the left-sided player. He came the closest of any Dortmund player in the first-half to overturning the deficit as he was twice denied by Starke but his influence waned thereafter as he found it tough going against Beck. Did keep the ball very well though.

  • Ilkay Gündogan

Ilkay Gündogan Flop of the Match

On this evidence, he has a long way to go to emulate the exploits of Sahin in midfield. There were some nice touches but nothing substantial enough, which allowed him to control the game. Was well marshalled by Rudy and Salihovic.

  • Shinji Kagawa

    Shinji Kagawa

A disappointing day for the Japanese who tried hard but as is the case with such players, he will not excel in every game. He was fine playing the simple passes in and around the box but he lacked the killer ball today to Lewandowski. Even when his best chance came, Vorsah robbed him inside the box.

  • Sven Bender

    Sven Bender

Had a solid game in central midfield against a fine Hoffenheim midfield partnership. Did a good job in front of the two defenders to intercept passes out to the flanks and was as combative as ever if not at his best. At times needed to be more composed with the ball and keep it simpler.

  • Mario Götze

    Mario Götze

A lot has happened to the teenager over the past week, never mind year. He showed flashes of his best form with quick feet and sharp turns of space but it never quite happened for him today and he was taken out of the firing line by Klopp.

  • Robert Lewandowski

    Robert Lewandowski

In fairness to the striker, he was having to feed on the scraps as the service was poor. He had three efforts on goal but never looked a goal threat as he often had to latch onto long balls forward into the channels. Vorsah and Compper were rarely worried by his presence up front.

Substitutions

    Jakub Blaszczykowski

Kuba came on for Gotze to try and inject some quality down the right-hand side with his wing play. He struggled though as Braafheid used his positioning and strength to limit his impact. When a decent chance fell to him, he skied the ball over the bar.

  • Ivan Perisic

    Ivan Perisic

The Croatian made an impact when he came on with five efforts on goal - more than anyone else. His aerial ability posed problems and he hit the crossbar with a header. Deserves a starting berth next weekend.

  • Mohamed Zidan

    0

    Mohamed Zidan

His speed and acceleration created a couple of openings once he came on but he often found himself too deep to affect the game in the way he would have liked.
