Player Ratings: Bayern Munich 0-1 Borussia Monchengladbach

Goal.com rates the players on show as the Bundesliga title favourites suffer a surprise defeat to a side who last season escaped relegation only by way of a two-legged play-off

By Gary Niblock

    Manuel Neuer

After a quiet 40 or so minutes, he showed just why he had been presented with the trophy for Sportswriters' Player of the Year with an excellent fingertip save to deny Arango. He then showed fallibility, coming to the edge of the box and failing to connect, allowing De Camargo to score.

  • Rafinha

    Rafinha

Back in the Bundesliga, he was eager from the off to attack down the right and cross into the penalty box. However, he faded as Bayern ran out of gas and ideas, which was a loss for his side as Lahm was ineffective attacking on the other flank.

  • Jerome Boateng

Jerome Boateng Flop of the Match

Charged with solidifying a weak Bayern central defence, the former Hamburg man began confidently. However, he was culpable for Gladbach's opening goal when he misjudged the bounce of the ball and failed to connect with his header. Did not last the game as he was sacrificed in search of an equaliser.

  • Holger Badstuber

    Holger Badstuber

One of just two survivors from last year's back five, he produced an important block to thwart the dangerous Reus. Did a good job in marking Hanke out of proceedings and was the best performer at the back for his side today.

  • Philipp Lahm
    54

    Philipp Lahm

Returning to the left-hand side of defence, he was able to overlap with Muller, who tended to cut inside. However, he lacked conviction with his left foot, which nullified his attacking threat. Defensively he did not have too many problems save one burst from Reus, where he declined to make a challenge.

  • Arjen Robben

    Arjen Robben

The Dutch winger had the odd burst of pace and a shot over the crossbar but was very well marshalled by Daems, which meant he had to resort to dinking balls into the box in the first half. Led the charge once Bayern went behind and was denied by a fine save from ter Stegen. Not his day.

  • Luiz Gustavo

    Luiz Gustavo

Without ever particularly standing out, the big Brazilian was tidy in possession, with the occasional more elaborate pass and used his imposing frame to win the ball countless times for the team. He may not be Arturo Vidal but Bayern shelled out a lot of money for a reason.

  • Toni Kroos
    30
    43
    2.50

    Toni Kroos

In the side today due to Ribery's absence, he found it difficult to orchestrate the game as the playmaker. Apart from a couple of long-range shots, he offered little in the way of danger. No surprise when the Frenchman replaced him.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger
    43
    33
    2.00

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Another typical Schweinsteiger performance of recent times in the league. Excellent in his distribution but not as threatening as he ought to be and he should look to take the game by the scruff of the neck more against tightly packed defences.

  • Thomas Müller
    70
    13

    Thomas Müller

Deployed today on the left in place of Ribery, he revelled in the space he was afforded as he helped Bayern stretch the play. His close control in and around the area hepled create space as Gladbach sat deep.

  • Mario Gomez
    41
    28
    2.50

    Mario Gomez

Had an early chance with his head and made some intelligent runs into the channels. Denied in the second half by an excellent stop from ter Stegen and then the post.

    Franck Ribéry

Summoned on the hour mark, he took a while to get up to speed coming back from an ankle injury. Latched onto a loose Nordtveit pass and made a superb run before setting up Petersen but otherwise offered little.

  • Nils Petersen
    31

    Nils Petersen

Made his Bayern debut in the last quarter and lacked a little in confidence, as evidenced when he chose not to go for goal from Ribery's cross, when that was the better option to take.

  • Marc-Andre ter Stegen
    98
    6

Marc-Andre ter Stegen Top of the Match

The young goalkeeper was a touch hesitant early on but was much more assured thereafter, making one good stop to deny Gomez. Improved as the game went on ,denying Robben with an agile stop before the save of the match to thwart Schweinsteiger.

  • Tony Jantschke
    9
    4
    2.50

    Tony Jantschke

Produced an excellent tackle on Muller when the Bayern man looked set to pull the trigger and score. However, he also had trouble with his opposite number who at times was a split second quicker in terms of his thinking.

  • Roel Brouwers
    15
    7
    3.00

    Roel Brouwers

The spare defender, he was in an uncompromising mood in the tackle and had to be warned on more than one occasion by referee Babak Refati. Still, he stayed the right side of the line and led his team superbly at the back in Stranzl's absence.

  • Dante
    14
    5
    3.00

    Dante

A popular figure with the Gladbach fans, he had the odd difficulty tracking the runs in behind of Mario Gomez.. Though he lost more duels than he won, he stood firm particularly in the second half when Bayern grew ever more desperate.

  • Filip Daems
    12
    4
    3.00

    Filip Daems

The Belgian played a key role in managing to subdue Arjen Robben, which helped render Bayern largely impotent and was also on hand to head behind his own goal when Gladbach were under pressure.

  • Marco Reus
    20
    3
    2.50

    Marco Reus

The livewire looked to come in off the right flank to try and conjure up some magic for his team. Left Lahm for dead just before the half-hour before his shot was blocked. Could have been more decisive with his decision making.

  • Roman Neustädter
    9
    3
    2.50

    Roman Neustädter

Like Nordtveit, he displayed endless energy to help shield his defence and stifle the Bayern midfield. When Gladbach sensed a victory could be on the cards, also unfurled some nice passes forward. Covered more ground than anyone today.

  • Havard Nordtveit
    29
    5
    2.50

    Havard Nordtveit

Stayed very deep and covered a huge amount of ground in front of his two centre-backs. Did put his side in trouble on a couple of occasions with loose passes but that should not detract from the important work he put in today.

  • Juan Fernando Arango
    11
    3
    3.00

    Juan Fernando Arango

With Bayern dominating, he had few chances to display his quality before the break but he had his side's best chance, forcing a fine save from Neuer.

  • Mike Hanke
    7
    5
    2.50

    Mike Hanke

The striker sometimes lacked good understanding with Reus, who was buzzing around the pitch. Pulled up late on with an injury and was replaced by Herrmann, which summed up a disappointing day on a personal level.

  • Igor De Camargo
    17
    5
    3.00

    Igor De Camargo

The striker saw little of the ball in the first-half but did on occasions come deep to link with Reus. He lacked support from his team-mates, a view he made sure he put across to his team-mates. However, he received all the necessary support from Neuer and Boateng before bravely heading home the winning goal. If he stays fit, he can be one of the league's leading frontmen.
