Player Ratings: Aston Villa 2-4 Chelsea

By John Stammers at Villa Park

  • Shay Given

    Shay Given

The Irishman could do nothing about any of the goals. He saved from Fernando Torres and Co. on a number of occasions, one in particular a brilliant stop to deny the Spaniard.

  • Stephen Warnock

    3.00

    Stephen Warnock

Did well to get himself up and down the left when Chelsea were dominant, flew into tackles and showed passion throughout the game.

  • James Collins
    21
    40
    3.00

    James Collins

Got his team back in the game with a good header from a long throw, but unfortunately couldn't stop Chelsea's overall attack.

  • Eric Lichaj
    27
    43
    3.00

    Eric Lichaj

Got a goal on his first start for the club and also made the other, a day to be proud of despite the result.

  • Nathan Baker

    41
    2.50

    Nathan Baker

Stopped a certain goal with a block on the line but again was part of a defence that looked like leaking whenever the hosts attacked.

  • Stephen Ireland

    Stephen Ireland

Broke up play well in midfield at times in what was a tough game for the central midfielder with Chelsea having the much larger share of possession.

  • Barry Bannan

    2.50

    Barry Bannan

Worked hard but was ultimately outclassed by the visitors midfield.

  • Chris Herd
    11
    37
    2.50

    Chris Herd

A quiet game but in reality didn't have many chances to impress as time on the ball was limited.

  • Gary Gardner
    13
    38
    3.00

    Gary Gardner

Hard day at the office for the Villa man, lacked flair in the first half but did help is team nearly pull it back in the second.

  • Gabriel Agbonlahor
    41
    31
    3.00

    Gabriel Agbonlahor

The forward was arguably Aston Villa's best player. He went close to equalising soon after the Chelsea goal, but found the side netting. Credit to the striker for chasing any loose balls, used his pace well against David Luiz.

  • Andreas Weimann
    14
    65
    2.50

Andreas Weimann Flop of the Match

Worked hard up front and chased down lost causes but failed to pose a real threat to the Chelsea back four.

Substitutions

  • Marc Albrighton

    Marc Albrighton

Came on and produced a spark that the hosts very much needed, set-up Eric Lichaj for Villa's first and looked lively.

  • Emile Heskey
    42

    Emile Heskey

Late substitute, had no chances to show what he can do.

  • Petr Cech
    328
    14
    3.50

    Petr Cech

Solid performance from the Chelsea keeper, made one brilliant stop from Gabriel Agbonlahor and dealt with high balls under pressure very well. No chance with the Villa goals.

  • Branislav Ivanovic
    471
    26
    3.50

    Branislav Ivanovic

The full-back made a decent return from injury and managed to get himself on the scoresheet twice in the process, even if it was a case of him being in the right place at the right time both times. Still, was the match-winner in the end.

  • Ashley Cole
    161
    101
    3.00

    Ashley Cole

Quiet game compared to the full-back's usual, although he did get into a good position once in the first half only to be denied a shot by a last ditch tackle from Barry Bannan.

  • David Luiz
    208
    50
    2.50

    David Luiz

Composed on the ball but looked in danger when the ball was played over the top for the pacey Gabriel Agbonlahor to chase on to. Replaced just before the break with an ankle knock.

  • John Terry
    209
    77
    3.00

    John Terry

A normal day at the office for the England man, plenty of headed clearances and didn't put a foot wrong. However it was a different story after the break with Villa nearly coming away with a point.

  • Frank Lampard
    229
    133
    3.00

    Frank Lampard

Ran the midfield for Chelsea, but in truth he did so against a below par Villa outfit. Roberto Di Matteo would have probably liked to seen more bursting runs from the midfielder in game that he must have thought he could have scored in.

  • John Obi Mikel
    202
    101
    3.00

    John Obi Mikel

Easy game for the Nigerian, who tended to sit back in the middle of the park while team-mates bombed forward.

  • Fernando Torres
    1783
    60
    4.00

Fernando Torres Top of the Match

Looked very sharp up top and produced some moments of brilliance as well as dangerous runs in behind the Villa back four. Was involved in Chelsea's opener and the winner. Should have scored very early on but was denied by Given. Scored the winner after Villa's fightback as well, the Spanish forward is most certainly back.

  • Juan Mata
    555
    24
    4.00

    Juan Mata

The Spaniard is very much a class act, he showed several excellent touches to tease the opposition as well as having a hand in both goals. Happy to run all day long to receive the ball and managed to hurt Villa with it.

  • Salomon Kalou
    161
    89
    2.50

    Salomon Kalou

Had little impact in the first half, with Mata the preferred option most of the time, was replaced not long after the break.

  • Daniel Sturridge
    208
    203
    2.50

    Daniel Sturridge

The forward remains slightly wasteful with his final ball, however there was some good direct running from the Englishman.

Substitutions

  • Gary Cahill
    182
    43
    2.50

    Gary Cahill

Came on for the injured David Luiz just before half-time and was warmly received by one of his former clubs. However it went downhill from there with the defence he played a part in conceding two goals in the second period.

  • Florent Malouda
    120
    131
    2.50

    Florent Malouda

Thrown on in the second period but gave little threat on the wing.

  • Ramires
    196
    27
    3.00

    Ramires

Second-half substitute, did little going forward and was part of the second half Chelsea side which allowed Villa back into the game.
