Player Ratings: Liverpool 1-1 Aston Villa

The Reds suffered another dismal home result but picked up a point after a late Luis Suarez goal cancelled out Chris Herd's early opener

    Doni

Had the distance to react to Herd’s opener, but his attempt to get to the Villa midfielder’s effort was far from commanding. Was not given much else to do, apart from being trusted with his footwork by a wayward back-pass from Skrtel.

  • José Enrique

    José Enrique

Continuously lost the ball in dangerous positions and was the culprit in Villa’s opener with a lack of attention on the ball. Recovered to try and spur on Liverpool down the left-side through tenacious efforts to get the ball into the box, winning corners in the process.

The veteran did not have too much to worry about apart from the goal and was predominantly strong in the tackle, keeping Agbonlahor at bay for most of the match.

  • Martin Skrtel

The Slovakian defender did a great job at the back and restricted Villa to very few chances at goal.

    Jon Flanagan

Made a few adventurous runs down the flank, but none produced anything compared to that of Enrique on the opposite side until the second half when the young full-back tried to muster something to urge Liverpool to a winner.

    Steven Gerrard

Another lacklustre performance from the Reds’ skipper who always wanted to get Liverpool going through the middle, but passing free of consistency. Made up for his average display with a perfect ball to the back-post to Agger, whose header was the catalyst for Liverpool’s equaliser.

The midfielder struggled to really make a difference and his wayward passing at times allowed Villa to have a go at attacking their hosts. Occasional runs got Villa worried, but could not link up to full effect with the attackers ahead.

Woke up after the goal, before once again going missing and getting stranded in the middle leaving Enrique to do the hard work on the left flank.

A largely ineffective individual in the middle, with little influence in Liverpool going forward.

The Villa defenders bossed the striker around for most of the game, leaving the Uruguayan frustrated and without anywhere to go on a number of occasions. Kuyt did not do enough of a good job to support his strike partner and left Liverpool bare up top. Took his only real chance of the game to full effect, heading in from Agger’s rebound.

The Dutchman had a great contender for miss of the season, with a skied shot from no more than three yards from goal going straight over the bar. Failed to back-up Suarez with the support the former Ajax man required.

The Dane making his return from injury was the catalyst for Suarez to grab the equaliser, the defender’s rebounded header setting up the Uruguayan.

Was rarely tested in the first half, but was required in the second after Suarez headed onto the post, before the keeper showed brilliant reactions to scoop the ball off the line. The Irishman’s hesitant save from Agger’s header led to Liverpool’s equaliser, as Suarez was able to pounce on the rebound. Made a number of saves at the end to earn his side a point.

Was pestered frequently by Enrique with the right-back allowing his opposite number to get the ball into the box on too many occasions, before the Spaniard stopped his tenacious work in the second half.

  • Stephen Warnock

Stepping up the pitch to the left-wing, the former Liverpool man did a decent job, but could not get Agbonlahor involved quite as much as he should have.

    James Collins

Kept Suarez out of the game for the most part, leaving the Uruguayan frustrated as he tried breathlessly to get Liverpool into gear in the final third. However, Liverpool pushed until the end and finally broke the Villa defence down, with Suarez easily getting free of Collins to get the equaliser.

Playing at left-back instead of his usual right-sided position, the American did a great job in supressing Liverpool’s attacks on his flank, with Kuyt occasionally making a nuisance of himself.

Took full advantage of the Liverpool defenders’ lack of confidence on the ball and caught them out in possession, before pulling it back for Herd to strike from distance. Kept Villa moving throughout and left Liverpool without much say in the middle.

Took his goal with some style, side-footing from the edge of the area past a less than impressive Doni and into the top corner for his first for Villa. Did a reasonable job in the middle, but his goal was his only highlight.
