Player Ratings: Liverpool 4-1 Chelsea

An own goal from Michael Essien and strikes by Jordan Henderson, Daniel Agger and Jonjo Shelvey helped the Reds exorcise the ghost of Saturday's FA Cup defeat

    Pepe Reina

Once again should have done better as Ramires scored for Chelsea but produced a brilliant stop to keep out Lukaku's close-range header.

  • Glen Johnson

    Glen Johnson

Solid defensively and a threat when he joined the attack, particularly in the second half. Provided a superb cross which Carroll volleyed off target.

  • Daniel Agger

    Daniel Agger

Scored Liverpool's third in the 28th minute, stooping to head home from close range. Defensively strong against Ramires in a less-favoured left-back role.

  • Jamie Carragher

    Jamie Carragher

Solid and composed at the heart of the Liverpool defence, using his savvy to deny Torres space.

  • Martin Skrtel

    Martin Skrtel

The Slovakian was dominant in the air and rarely troubled by Chelsea's feeble attack.

  • Maxi Rodríguez

    3.50

    Maxi Rodríguez

The Argentine drifted into pockets of space and used his nous around the edge of the penalty area. Played the pass for Henderson's goal and appeared to wave goodbye to Anfield as he was substituted late on.

  • Jordan Henderson
    250
    41
    3.50

    Jordan Henderson

Played with energy throughout and scored after taking a gamble, bursting forward and slotting the ball calmly into the bottom corner.

  • Stewart Downing
    160
    142
    2.50

    Stewart Downing

Desperate to score his first Premier League goal for Liverpool, he was awarded penalty duty on the stroke of half-time. He duly hit the post with his strike, rather summing up his first season at Anfield. Did show glimpses of his quality, not least with a dipping volley in the first half that clipped the crossbar.

  • Jonjo Shelvey
    305
    44
    3.50

    Jonjo Shelvey

Scored Liverpool's fourth with a finish that was far more difficult than he made it look as he smashed the ball in from 30 yards following Turnbull's poor clearance. Took up good positions defensively and never afraid to receive the ball as he played neat, accurate passes.

  • Luis Suárez
    420
    87
    4.00

    Luis Suárez

Tormented the Chelsea defence as he wriggled past challenges and continually went past Terry. Superb run to force the opening goal, although his finishing could have been better. Stupid to raise his arm to Ivanovic and was lucky not to be punished.

  • Andy Carroll

Andy Carroll Top of the Match

Bullied the Blues defence throughout the game and was completely dominant in the air. Set up Agger's goal with a clever header across goal and won the penalty as he was brought down by Ivanovic. Worked hard throughout and the only thing missing was a goal.

Substitutions

  • Raheem Sterling
    245
    26

    Raheem Sterling

The exciting teenager replaced Downing seven minutes from time and smashed one effort high and wide.

  • Dirk Kuyt
    176

    Dirk Kuyt

Came on for Maxi in the 83rd minute. Some nice link-up play with Suarez.

  • Ross Turnbull

    Ross Turnbull

The back-up goalkeeper made some smart stops at times but was punished for a horrible clearance as Shelvey smashed home Liverpool's fourth.

  • Branislav Ivanovic
    73
    183
    2.00

    Branislav Ivanovic

The Serbian struggled against the Liverpool strikers and conceded a penalty for pointlessly hauling down Carroll at the end of the first half.

  • Paulo Ferreira
    47
    162
    2.50

    Paulo Ferreira

Decent when one-on-one against Maxi but looked rusty and found it difficult when Carroll pulled on to him for aerial challenges.

  • John Terry
    119
    335
    2.00

John Terry Flop of the Match

The Chelsea captain had a nightmare first half as he was nutmugged countless times, epecially by Suarez, and was at least partially at fault for three Liverpool goals.

  • Ryan Bertrand
    73
    148
    2.50

    Ryan Bertrand

The youngster was skinned by Suarez for Liverpool's opener and never looked comfortable as the hosts attacked with verve and pace.

  • Michael Essien
    56
    217
    2.00

    Michael Essien

The Ghanian midfielder was badly off the pace and not just as he turned Suarez's cutback into his own net in the 19th minute. Should have been sent off for a nasty studs-up challenge on Carroll for which he only received a booking.

  • Oriol Romeu
    55
    178
    2.50

    Oriol Romeu

The young Spaniard sat as Chelsea's defensive midfielder but could not stem Liverpool's passing and movement. Offered very little when in possession.

  • Ramires
    188
    111
    3.00

    Ramires

It was no surprise that the Blues' form player scored their only goal, turning the ball in with his body from a free-kick five minutes after the restart.

  • Florent Malouda
    44
    253
    2.50

    Florent Malouda

The Frenchman provided the delivery for Ramires' goal but it was his only involvement of note in the game as he drifted through the 90 minutes.

  • Fernando Torres
    312
    138
    2.50

    Fernando Torres

Constantly derided on his return to his former club and only in flashes troubled the Liverpool defence. Seemed to be on his heels for most of the match but did smash one first-half shot that hit the crossbar from a tight angle.

  • Daniel Sturridge
    36
    286
    2.50

    Daniel Sturridge

An almost anonymous display on the left wing as he failed to offer anything in attack and was reluctant to track back defensively. Replaced by Lukaku in the 68th minute.

Substitutions

  • Romelu Lukaku
    115
    204
    2.50

    Romelu Lukaku

Replaced Sturridge in the 68th minute. Missed a glorious chance as he headed too close to Reina when unmarked six yards out.
