The Omani goalkeeper had a reasonably quiet opening 28 minutes with the defence in front of him denying any Arsenal attacks. However he should have done much better with Arteta’s long range strike that opened the scoring and he was unable to keep Vermaelen’s header out minutes later.

    S. Gohouri

Organised the defence well, he read the game well to support Stam on the right side against the pace of Santos and Gervinho. When required he stepped up neatly and was able intercept passes from the Arsenal midfield aimed at Van Persie.

The central defender was playing in the middle of a back three and was given the main task of marking the in-form Van Persie which he did well. He had a little bit of luck in the first 20 minutes when his attempted clearance from a right wing cross spun into the hands of Al Habsi when it could have easily flown into the net.

  • Ronnie Stam

Playing in more of a wing back role the Dutchman stayed very close to Gervinho but he had a tough afternoon as the Ivorian continued to run at him. He was able to limit the balls into Van Persie but found it difficult to gewt forward and support Wigan attacks due to the danger posed by Gervinho.

Rather than playing in his normal left back position the Ecuadorian lined up as a third central defender as Roberto Martinez looked to negate the threat from Arsenal.

    James McCarthy

Playing as the holding man in midfield he had a busy afternoon trying to stay close to the runs of Arteta and Ramsey. He also posed a threat going forward but these chances were few and far between as Arsenal dominated the game.

  • Victor Moses

    Victor Moses

The lively winger posed plenty of problems to Laurent Koscielny in the opening exchanges of the match but as Arsenal took control he had less and less to work with.

  • Jordi Gómez

    Jordi Gómez

Playing as the man to support Sammon in attack the Spaniard drifted around the pitch looking to pose problems to the Arsenal defence whenever he could. He had the first real chance of the game in the sixth minute but his shot was blocked by Santos. Replaced by Crusat in the 59th minute.

  • David Jones

Rather than playing as a central midfielder Jones played in more of a left wing back role and was given the task of staying very close to Theo Walcott.

The midfielder worked hard to try and support Wigan attacks whilst also providing defensive support to McCarthy when Arsenal were on the attack.

The big striker did his best to stay away from the attentions of Mertesacker and Vermaelen by moving out to the right against Santos. His movement gave the Wigan defenders something to aim at and he held the ball up well which allowed some neat Wigan moves. Replaced by Di Santo in the 59th minute.

    Wojciech Szczesny

The young Pole had a little bit of luck in the sixth minute when his palmed clearance fell to Jordi Gomez but the Spaniard’s shot was deflected wide. Otherwise he had a reasonably easy afternoonn as Wigan lacked a real goal threat to test him.

  • Per Mertesacker

    Per Mertesacker

An easy afternoon for the German, he rarely had a man to mark so had plenty of time on the ball and organised his fellow defenders well. When Sammon did drift near to him he barely gave him a kick, using all his experience to limit his chances.

  • Thomas Vermaelen

    Thomas Vermaelen

The defender had a good afternoon, made easier by the lack of Wigan strikers. He was the catalyst to get Arsenal going in the game, it was his good surging run out of defence and pass that saw Arteta open the scoring and minutes later the defender rose at the back post and headed past Al Habsi for his third goal of the season.

  • Laurent Koscielny

    Laurent Koscielny

Not naturally a full back and after a tough opening 10 minutes against Moses he performed well against the winger.

  • Andre Santos

    Andre Santos

The Brazilian full back had to deal with Stam and he struggled at times to deal with direct running of the Dutchman, however as the game went on he began to be in total control.

  • Mikel Arteta

    Mikel Arteta

The Spaniard seemed to glide through the game as Arsenal dominated the midfield, and he showed what an eye for goal he has as he scored his third goal for the Gunners. He received a pass from Thomas Vermalen 30 yards from goal, before thumping it past Al Habsi to give his side the lead.

  • Aaron Ramsey

    Aaron Ramsey

The Welshman strolled through this game, trying to evade the attentions of James McCarthy and support Van Persie in attack when he could. He inter changed positions with Arteta well as they took it in turns to surge forward and threaten the Wigan defence.

  • Alex Song

    Alex Song

Sitting deeper in midfield than Ramsey and Arteta the Cameroon international stayed very close to Jordi Gomez and was able to pick up any other Wigan attacks as they broke from midfield. He found himself supporting Koscielny more down the right against Moses. He was replaced by Coquelin in the 80th minute.

  • Robin van Persie

    Robin van Persie

The Dutchman led the line brilliantly for the Gunners despite having three defenders to deal with. His movement and vision enabled him to find plenty of room and cause problems for the Wigan defence. He had a couple of chances in the opening half but was unable to beat Al Habsi, however in the second half he did find the net to make it four nil.

  • Theo Walcott
    288

    Theo Walcott

The winger had a quiet first half as he tried to escape the close marking of David Jones, he switched over to the left wing to try and find some space but still found it difficult against Stam. He was replaced by Arshavin with 10 minutes to go.

  • Gervinho
    342
    29

    Gervinho

The forward never stopped running for his team and with a little bit more luck he could have created a couple more goals in the first half. He was also unlucky not to get a clear sight of goal when released by Van Persie on two occasions in the opening period. He got himself onto the score-sheet in the second half as he followed up a Van Persie shot and tapped the ball into an empty net. He was replaced by Benayoun with 10 minutes to go.
