Micah Richards, James Milner and Mario Balotelli all impressed for the Premier League leaders, while Ryan Taylor's first-half horror show left the visitors reeling

    Joe Hart

A little wasteful with his distribution in the first half as City tried to break up the left wing through Clichy but atoned with a superb save from a close-range Demba Ba effort to keep the game at 0-0.

  • Micah Richards

    Micah Richards

Disappointed to be left out of Fabio Capello’s squad but continues to be nothing short of excellent for the other Italian he's so desperate to impress. Fired in a dangerous early cross only for the Toon defence to clear and showed quick thinking to nick the ball off Ryan Taylor to score City's second. Won his side a second-half penalty following a marauding run.

  • Vincent Kompany

    Vincent Kompany

The skipper returned to the side after suspension and dealt with Ba superbly. Restricted the striker's already- limited options and rarely looked troubled in the heart of the home side's defence. Nearly let Ben Arfa in on the hour mark after slipping but was otherwise cool, calm and collected.

  • Joleon Lescott

    Joleon Lescott

Returned to club duty after a superb international break saw him seriously stake his claim for a regular England spot and looked full of confidence, breaking upfield in the 12th minute as City looked to play through the middle.

  • Gael Clichy

    Gael Clichy

The former Arsenal man looked to advance up the wing as much as possible but was a little wasteful with his passing, completely wasting a cross-field ball early on. Played out a fascinating battle with Simpson.

  • James Milner

    James Milner

Has improved dramatically over the last 12 months and was dangerous once again at the Etihad, nearly setting up a City opener with an inch-perfect cross on to the head of Balotelli. Caused Ryan Taylor plenty of problems.

  • Samir Nasri

    Samir Nasri

Doubts over the Frenchman’s fitness were dispelled with a starting place in Mancini’s line-up and he was a menace in behind Balotelli and Aguero throughout. Stretched the Newcastle midfield and showed effortless class on the ball.

  • Nigel De Jong

    Nigel De Jong

Was preferred to Gareth Barry in the City midfield and targeted Hatem Ben Arfa early on. Allowed the Frenchman a little too much space occasionally but was assured in front of his back four and typically tenacious in the tackle.

  • Yaya Touré

    Yaya Touré

The Ivorian travelled to South Africa over the international break but showed little sign of fatigue. Won his side the penalty that led to Balotelli's opener with a quickly-struck volley that hit Taylor's arm.

  • Sergio Agüero

    Sergio Agüero

Has struggled with hamstring trouble in recent weeks and looked rusty in the opening exchanges, wasting a pass in the direction of the vibrant Balotelli. Grew into the game however and nearly gave his side the lead with a powerful strike after easily turning Taylor on the edge of the box. Took his penalty well to wrap the game up.

  • Mario Balotelli

Mario Balotelli Top of the Match

Was superb for Italy against Poland last weekend and continued his fine form at the Etihad, working incredibly hard to chase down the Magpies defence. Nearly broke the deadlock with his head on the half-hour mark but was denied by a superb Krul save. Took his penalty with typical bravado.

Replaced Balotelli with 20 minutes left and showed some typically classy touches, playing in Micah Richards superbly before the full-back won the penalty that led to City's third.

    Tim Krul

The Dutchman has emerged as one of the Premier League's most promising young goalkeepers and lived up to his burgeoning reputation with a world-class save to keep out a Balotelli header in the 30th minute. Was left stationary for the Italian's penalty however.

  • Fabricio Coloccini

    Fabricio Coloccini

The Magpies skipper has been inspired at the back so far this season and was solid yet again, blocking Balotelli efforts in the 21st, 27th and 51st minutes.

    Danny Simpson

Can be added to the ever-growing list of exciting English right-backs after a performance of real energy at the back and going forwards. Shadowed Aguero well and never stopped running up the right-flank to support Ameobi.

  • Ryan Taylor

Ryan Taylor Flop of the Match

Struggled against the speed and power of both Richards and Milner and his first-half misery was compounded after giving away a penalty after allowing Toure's volley to strike his arm before allowing Richards to nick possession in the box to score City's second.

  • Steven Taylor

    13

    Steven Taylor

Has been an absolute rock at the back this season but struggled to contain Balotelli and Aguero, allowing the latter too much space on the turn as he got a dangerous shot away in the 20th minute.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    Yohan Cabaye

A very classy performance from the Frenchman who held the ball well under pressure from De Jong and Toure. Fed Ben Arfa with some neat passes and worked hard in tracking back.

  • Danny Guthrie

    Danny Guthrie

Put the City midfield under plenty of pressure but struggled to get his foot on the ball for long periods and lacked the intensity that Pardew was desperately calling for from the technical area. Should've done better with his timid 65th minute strike.

  • Hatem Ben Arfa

    Hatem Ben Arfa

The Frenchman will be hoping to finally secure a sustained run of games free of injury and looked dangerous behind Demba Ba, with the pair nearly breaking the deadlock in the 35th minute after some superb link-up play. Nearly scored a superb effort on the hour mark after some dazzling dribbling but was denied by the post. Foolishly brought down Richards to give City their second penalty.

  • Jonas Gutierrez

Was given very few chances to dazzle down the left but put in a shift to help the hapless Taylor out at the back. Worked hard but struggled to make a real impact.

  • Demba Ba

    Demba Ba

Played the offside trap well but looked isolated up front on his own on occasion. Was a threat when Ben Arfa advanced and should have scored on the 35th minute, only to see Hart pull out a fine low save.

  • Sammy Ameobi

    Sammy Ameobi

Showed encouraging endeavour down the right early on, putting Clichy under pressure and looked confident throughout. Should've tested Joe Hart more thoroughly with a 29th-minute strike.
