Live Commentary

  • Fulltime at Old Trafford. I don't quite know what to say about that. United's biggest home defeat in over 50 years. United were quite awful at times, but one shouldn't take the credit out of City's performance as they were absolutely ruthless. Thanks for joining me this afternoon, hope you have enjoyed the coverage.
  • 90' + 4'
GOAL!!! This is just ridiculous. David Silva, plays Dzeko in behind the United defence and Dzeko takes the ball on before beating De Gea. Incredible.

    Goal David Silva
  • 90' + 1'
GOAL!!! Unbelievably, it's five! Dzeko plays the ball between Ferdinand's legs for Silva to run on to and the Spaniard beats his countryman in the United goal. If four was embarrassing, then five is uncomprehensable.
  • 90'
    Assist Joleon Lescott
  • 90'
    Goal Edin Dzeko
  • 90'
GOAL!!! And there's the fourth. Barry flicks on a corner at the near-post before Lescott, at the far post, knocks the ball back in for Dzeko. This is now embarrassing.
  • 89'
    SubstitutionJames Milner Aleksandar Kolarov
  • 88'
Toure goes close as the Ivorian looks to toe-poke the ball into the bottom far corner, but it goes just wide.
  • 86'
    Yellow Card Micah Richards
  • 85'
United with a free-kick on the left wing. Young delivers, but Hart punches clear. Fletcher eventually plays in another cross, but Smalling's header goes over.
  • 83'
    Yellow Card Danny Welbeck
  • 81'
    Assist Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
  • 81'
    Goal Darren Fletcher
GOAL!!! And what a goal it was! Fletcher plays the ball into Hernandez who then lays the ball off for the Scot again and he curls it into the top corner. Fantastic finish. We could be in for quite a finish now!
  • 79'
    Yellow Card Chris Smalling
  • 77'
This time it's Dzeko who goes close! Silva, once again, is the creator in chief as he picks out the striker between Ferdinand and Evra, but the right foot of De Gea comes to the rescue.
  • 75'
    Yellow Card Edin Dzeko
  • 75'
    SubstitutionSergio Agüero Samir Nasri
  • 74'
Silva almost grabs a fourth as a lucky ricochet comes down for him just yards out but he volleys over.
  • 73'
Nothing comes of the free-kick as Jones can't quite reach it at the back post.
  • 72'
United win a free-kick in a dangerous position on the right wing. Young stands over it.
  • 70'
    SubstitutionMario Balotelli Edin Dzeko
  • 69'
    Assist Micah Richards
  • 69'
    Goal Sergio Agüero
GOAL!!! And there is the third as Sergio Aguero seals the match. Milner plays the impeccable Richards into the area and the full-backs plays the ball across the goal for Aguero to tap in. City set to go five points clear at the top of the Premier League.
  • 67'
    Yellow Card Patrice Evra
  • 66'
    SubstitutionNani Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
  • 66'
Here come the changes for United as Phil Jones comes on for Anderson and Hernandez replaces Nani, neither of whom have been at their best.
  • 65'
    SubstitutionAnderson Phil Jones
  • 65'
Balotelli almost in for his hat-trick there! Silva looked to play a pass across the goal, but in came Chris Smalling to save that particular chance.
  • 63'
Sir Alex Ferguson is about to show his hand as Phil Jones and Javier Hernandez ready themselves on the touchline.
  • 62'
    Yellow Card Anderson
  • 60'
    Assist James Milner
  • 60'
    Goal Mario Balotelli
GOAL!!! Balotelli grabs his second of the match and it is Milner once again with the assist! Silva tortures Anderson in the United area before releasing Milner down to his right. The England midfielder calmly plays a strong ball across the goal giving Balotelli as easy finish. It would be quite some comeback for United now.
  • 59'
Here is Greg's first post-red card update: The atmosphere has been rather tame here so far but the Stretford End is cranking up the volume as 10-man United look to get back in the game. The crowd will be needed if United are going to get back into this game as City look comfortable enough at the moment. The visitors have defended superbly so far and look threatening on the counter-attack with David Silva, Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero.
  • 57'
United putting on some pressure here with a series of corners. First Smalling goes for goal, but his effort is deflected behind, then Rooney goes for goal, however his curling effort was easy enough for Hart.
  • 56'
Corner for United as Young charges into the area before playing a ball towards the centre, but City put the ball behind.
  • 54'
Very good chance for United! Flether marches forward before cutting the ball inside to Young who scuffs his shot, but it comes back to him again, however he didn't know much about it and it bounces off him and behind.
  • 53'
City not letting up here as they press for that second goal. Richards is effectively playing as a winger at the moment.
  • 50'
Rooney releases Welbeck over the top and does well to give Lescott something to think about, but the defender eventually comes out on top.
  • 49'
United couldn't have hoped for a worse start to this second half. This game is definitely there for City to win now as the blues have penalty-shouts turned down.
  • 47'
    Red Card Jonny Evans
  • 47'
Manchester United's game-plan has just gone completely out the window as Jonny Evans receives a straight-red card! Aguero played a ball in behind the defender for Balotelli and the Italian got to the ball, but Evans pulled him down.
  • 46'
We're back underway for this second half.
  • United, despite probably having the better half, find themselves behind at home at halftime. Personall, I feel the two big problems for United are the distribution from Anderson and Fletcher, and the faillure to get Nani involved. How do you think United can get back into the match? Send your thoughts to me at @RyRyBenson on twitter.
  • One last score prediction. This one came from @ocintno, believing the visitors will be five points clear come the end of the match after picking up a 2-1 win.
  • Back to twitter for a few moments. @xAde05 is going for a home win with 3-1 the selected score, whilst @SAYEDMUJTABA is calling for United fans not to get worried just yet, saying: "Don't You realize never say die attitude in Manu... Manchester United will definitely win tonight..."
  • Halftime at Old Trafford. United have had the better of the match so far in terms of possession, but they haven't troubled the City goal anywhere near enough and Mario Balotelli's goal gives the visitors the lead at halftime.
  • 44'
United piling on the pressure for the last few minutes of this first half. Nani, Rooney and Welbeck all try to combine on the edge of the area, but the attack ends with Rooney and Nani flailing around on the floor in the area.
  • 43'
Here's another update from Greg at Old Trafford: 'Time for your sandwiches' is the taunt from City fans towards United's 'prawn sandwich brigade'. The visiting supporters are justified in their bullish mood given their side's stoic defending in the first-half. United have barely had a genuine sight on goal and City have increasingly threatened on the counter-attack as Sir Alex Ferguson's men have grown frustrated.
  • 41'
    Yellow Card Vincent Kompany
  • 40'
Good defending by Ferdinand there. Aguero was bearing down on him in the area, but the defender stood up strong and put in a very good block.
  • 39'
Evans should have done so much better there! From a short corner, Young played the ball to the back post where Rooney peeled off to before playing a volley-pass back into the area, but Evans swung for and missed with the ball striking his standing leg.
  • 38'
Great opportunity on the attack there as Welbeck surged towards the City defence, but his pass to Rooney had just too much on it. Very disappointing for United there.
  • 36'
This time it's Rooney who goes for goal! Nani opted to play the ball inside to the striker who dummied to shoot, before switching the ball to his left foot and striking, but Hart makes the save easily once again.
  • 35'
Balotelli wins a free-kick on the right wing as the Italian beats Evra so easily. The French full-back has looked vulnerable this season, and today isn't any different as he has been beaten time and time again so far.
  • 33'
Good effort by Anderson! Young whipped in a corner that was punched away by Hart, but the ball fell to the Brazilian on the edge of the box before getting it on to his left foot and going for goal, however Hart made the save.
  • 32'
Rooney get's the ball to Nani on the right, but unfortunately for United the cross is blocked by Clichy, but they must get Nani in the game more.
  • 29'
United's biggest problem is arguably the inability to get Nani involved. The hosts have had much of the possession, but the former Sporting man hasn't had much of a sniff. If anyone can unlock this City defence, it's the Portugal international.
  • 27'
Young had Hart scrambling there! The winger whipped in a cross/shot and the England goalkeeper launched himself across his goal, but luckily for him it whistled wide of the far post.
  • 26'
Here's Greg's post-goal update: Pandemonium in the section to my right where the City fans are housed as 3,000 supporters roar Mario Balotelli's name. The 'Why Always Me?' t-shirt drew plenty of chuckles in the press box. The Italian is a controversial character but he has been excellent this season – and that was a fine finish to put Roberto Mancini's side ahead in the first Manchester derby of the season.
  • 25'
It's fair to say, that goal has given City a massive boost. Aguero beats Evra down the left, but his chipped cross is just too high for Balotelli.
  • 23'
    Yellow Card Mario Balotelli
  • 22'
    Assist James Milner
  • 22'
    Goal Mario Balotelli
  • 18'
United still looking in relative control here as Anderson and Fletcher are getting the better of Barry and Toure so far. Rooney's positioning is undoubtedly helping his midfield too as the striker is dropping very deep.
  • 16'
@Michaelson92 is particularly confident about his prediction, saying: "city will definately win..2-0. Kun will score."
  • 15'
United with an encouraging attack there as Nani and Rooney link up on the right, before the play is switched to Young on the left. After winning a throw, Young gets the ball again, but his decent cross is dealt with.
  • 14'
Here is Greg's latest update: Manchester United have started strongly here, as City would have expected before the match. Roberto Mancini's side are defending very aggressively as they look to weather the storm for the first 20 minutes and take the sting out of the hosts. It's been a lively enough start here, with both sets of fans getting right behind their respective sides.
  • 13'
City looking a little more settled now after a very energetic opening from United. Silva and Richards link up on the right, but Richard's cross is blocked.
  • 10'
After a prediction in favour of the visitors, @izzlfizzl has put his eggs in United's basket, going for a 2-1 win for the Premier League champions.
  • 9'
Cleared well from that free-kick by Balotelli. The attack isn't over yet though as United get a throw in, and then a corner.
  • 8'
Another free-kick for United on that left wing as James Milner puts in a poor tackle on Young. Dangerous position for a good delivery here.
  • 7'
Rooney plays a ball in towards the far post with his left foot, but Anderson can't make the most of it and heads it behind the goal when he tried to play it back into the area.
  • 6'
Young picks up another free kick against Richards, this time out on the left wing.
  • 4'
The hosts are knocking the ball around nicely in these early stages with Anderson looking to get on the ball as much as possible. Both Nani and Young has also had plenty of the ball so far.
  • 3'
United have the first free-kick of the match as Young draws a foul from Richards near the left corner. Young delivers but the ball effectively hits Nani and nothing comes of the attack.
  • 2'
@Brian_alhwayek has gone for a 3-1 win for City, saying: "City have something to prove here, and they won't settle for less than a win."
  • 1'
And we're off at Old Trafford as United kick off.
  • Here is Greg once again: The atmosphere is building nicely here with just under 10 minutes until kick-off, a chorus of 'Blue Moon' ringing out from the City end before the United fans respond with 'this city is ours'. Old Trafford is nearly full now and it's nice that we've got a genuine derby atmosphere building here – I was worried by the number of 'half and half' scarves on sale – and being sold – outside the ground as I walked here a couple of hours ago.
  • Throughout the afternoon. Greg Stobart, our man at the match, will give regular updates. Here is his first: Good afternoon from Old Trafford, where dark clouds are gathering overhead ahead of a potentially stormy clash between these two city rivals. As the gap between United and City has closed in recent years, each Manchester derby seems to have grown in importance to the stage where this good be a season-defining game. The stadium is filling up as the two squads finish their warm-ups, with City looking particularly impressive in shooting practice as Sergio Aguero slams successive shots into the top corner from 25 yards.
  • The last time the two teams played a scoreless match was just last season as United picked up a point at Eastlands. History is stacked against the blues today, but if there is any match that is unpredicatable, it is the Manchester derby. Send your match predictions to @RyRyBenson on twitter.
  • City have won just two of the last 10 league meetings between to the two with United claiming seven victories, whilst the Citizens have only won at Old Trafford once in the last 37 years.
