FULL TIME! Final score: Manchester United 3-0 Tottenham. Goals by Welbeck, Anderson and Rooney make it two wins out of two for the defending champions after a dominant second half showing. Spurs, start with defeat and take on Manchester City next. That's all from me but stay with for our match report, ratings and all the reaction from Old Trafford.
  • 90' + 2'
    Yellow Card Jermain Defoe
  • 90' + 2'
A long-ranger from Huddlestone is spilt again by De Gea. He grabs it at the second attempt, which tempts Defoe into going in late and catching the Spaniard. De Gea is not happy and has a pop at Defoe, who is booked for his troubles.
  • 90'
Into THREE minutes of stoppage time at the end of the game...

And still United pour forwards. Rooney and Park this time, almost getting in each others' way, eventually the substitute takes over but can only hit tamely at Friedel.

Van der Vaart lets fly with a low shot from outside the box, De Gea keeps it out, although he spills it for a corner. From the kick, the ball comes back to the Dutchman who tries again but this time the Spaniard manages to keep hold of the ball.
  • 83'
WHAT A MISS BY ROONEY! He can afford to smile but he probably can't believe he has missed! Nani again sends in a great cross from the right, finds Rooney at the far post, yards from the goal line but he can only put it over the bar!
  • 82'
    SubstitutionAshley Young Ji-Sung Park
  • 81'
    SubstitutionTom Cleverley Ryan Giggs
  • 81'
    SubstitutionDanny Welbeck Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
  • 81'
A triple substitution for Manchester United. Huge applause for Welbeck who departs first for Hernandez. Cleverley and Young also go off with Giggs and Park the men to replace them.
  • 79'
DEFOE HITS THE BAR FOR SPURS! What a chance for the visitors! De Gea fails to claim a deep cross under pressure from Bale, the ball comes to the striker instead and he thunders a shot against the woodwork!
  • 77'
So close to a third for the champions. Nani is sent scampering into the box but is just denied by Friedel who gets there first.
  • 76'
    Assist Danny Welbeck
  • 76'
    Goal Anderson
  • 76'
GOAL! ANDERSON MAKES IT 2-0! Super goal from Manchester United! De Gea throws out quickly to Young who races down the left. He then plays it into Rooney, who picks out Anderson. The Brazilian finds Welbeck in the box who backheels it back to Anderson to finish past Friedel. Great move.
  • 74'
    SubstitutionJake Livermore Tom Huddlestone
  • 74'
    SubstitutionNiko Kranjcar Roman Pavlyuchenko
  • 74'
Double change for Spurs: off go Kranjcar and Livermore, on come Huddlestone and Pavlyuchenko.
  • 72'
Nani steals the ball off Lennon and feeds Jones but his shot is blocked. Spurs can then break but Defoe can't seem to make his mind up and his eventual pass is intercepted by Evans.
  • 70'
United win a couple of corners and from the second, Friedel is forced into a save after a half-volley from Evans, of all people. The hosts, full of confidence at the moment after that goal.
  • 68'
An overhead kick from Welbeck almost brings a second! A cross from Young was headed by Rooney and found the goalscorer with his back to goal. He tried the spectacular but it was too close to Friedel!
  • 67'
Time to check back in with Greg Stobart at Old Trafford: "United deserved that goal for the way they have played since half-time and their 75,000 fans are enjoying the moment, waving their new scarves over their heads. It was a goal made in the United academy – a wonderful cross from Tom Cleverley and an accurate glancing header into the net by Welbeck. Spurs switched off for a moment defensively and were duly punished."
  • 66'
Rooney tries again: thrashing a thunderous shot from 25 yards which flies inches wide of the top corner. Decent effort by the striker.
  • 65'
BRILLIANT SAVE FRIEDEL! Rooney plays the free-kick to Young, who knocks it back and Rooney tries to creep it into the near post but the American dives at full stretch and manages to paw it away!
  • 63'
A good run by Young, sees him find Evra just about to nip into the box. He is fouled on the edge of the box by Kranjcar. The home fans scream penalty, but it's just a free-kick....
  • 61'
    Assist Tom Cleverley
  • 61'
    Goal Danny Welbeck
  • 61'
GOAL! WELBECK SCORES! Manchester United lead 1-0! Assou-Ekotto gives the ball away to Cleverley. He finds Nani down the right, the ball is played back to Cleverley who crosses and Welbeck heads past Friedel for the opener!
  • 59'
Evans is penalised for a trip on Kranjcar. He needs to be careful now, he's already been booked remember. The kick is at least 40 yards from goal but Van der Vaart decides to shoot anyway...and no he doesn't get it on target.
  • 58'
Young tries to make amends with a flashy volley. A Smalling cross finds him at the far post, he takes a swing at it, connects well, but it's always rising, high, wide and nowhere near Friedel's goal.
  • 56'
United win a free-kick just outside the Spurs box, on the left, and with it the chance to whip the ball into the box. Young takes it, but it's awful, and barely beats the wall.
  • 54'
Back come the champions. Anderson plays a one-two with Rooney but his shot is blocked by Friedel. The ball rebounds straight back to United and Rooney hits his shot into the turf which makes it easy for the American to save again.
  • 53'
Spurs have started this half really strongly. They have United penned back inside their own half for a couple of minutes before eventually Bale crosses but Rooney is the man to get it clear.
  • 51'
Van der Vaart is screaming in frustration! Lennon beats Evra down the right, gets inside the box, has men queuing up for the cross, with the Dutchman screaming for a cut back, but his shot is blocked by Evans and the chances disappears.
  • 49'
And now Spurs try their luck. Defoe again having a pop from range he can't beat De Gea. Seconds later the visitors try again, Defoe finds Bale with an early ball but but he can only fire wide.
  • 48'
Smart stop from Friedel! United work the ball around the Spurs box. Rooney then manages to slip in Young, who controls the ball with one touch, swivels and shoots but again can't beat Friedel who saves well.
  • 47'
Spurs go straight on the attack with Van der Vaart sending a shot high into the stands. By the way Kyle Walker was feeling ill, apparently, and that's why he has gone off.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionKyle Walker Vedran Corluka
  • 46'
Welcome back! One change to tell you about at the break. Vedran Corluka replaces Kyle Walker for Spurs, other than that it's as we were as Spurs get this second half underway.
  • Over to our man Greg Stobart for his half-time thoughts: "Harry Redknapp energetically claps his hands together as the two teams head down the tunnel after a goalless opening 45 minutes. It was intriguing rather than exciting, with Tottenham looking very comfortable on the ball despite the absence of Luka Modric. Manchester United have been full of vigour and enthusiasm but their young team has shown naivety on occasions, particularly in the midfield areas. Neither goalkeeper has been too sternly tested but Sir Alex Ferguson will be pleased that David De Gea has responded well after two costly errors in his first two games for the club."
  • 45' + 2'
HALF-TIME! No goals so far, and defences very much on top at Old Trafford. Cleverley has gone closest for the hosts while Bale and Van der Vaart have both worked De Gea. Join me after the break for all the second half action.
  • 45' + 1'
Bit of a waste from Defoe. He has time, space and options in front of goal, opts to go it alone and shoots disappointingly wide.
  • 45'
Spot of handbags at Old Trafford. Kaboul protests after a challenge by Nani. The referee calms things down, opts to keep his cards in his pocket, and on we go....heading into TWO minutes of added time at the end of the first half.
  • 43'
Another save from De Gea! Spurs definitely having more chances in this first half. The shot comes from Van der Vaart on the turn on the edge of the box. It's hit powerfully but the Spaniard gets down well and claims confidently.
  • 42'
Great ball from Krancjar sends Defoe flying upfield. He only has Evans to beat, before he's in on goal, but the defender just nicks the ball away in time.
  • 41'
Livermore brings down Rooney on the edge of the box, but the referee waves play on. The ball comes to Nani who blasts wastefully into the stands...
  • 40'
Another booking and it's Dawson who gets his name taken. Young just beats him to a ball, but his momentum takes him into the winger and blocks him off. Yellow card for Dawson, spot of treatment for Young but it doesn't look too serious.
  • 39'
    Yellow Card Michael Dawson
  • 38'
Van der Vaart takes the kick but it's charged down by Welbeck. He then canters upfield but is penalised for a foul on Dawson. Both men went into the challenge with their boots raised, but it's the United man who gives away the foul. The home fans whistle their disapproval.
  • 37'
    Yellow Card Jonny Evans
  • 37'
First booking of the night and it goes to Jonny Evans. The centre back goes in late on Van der Vaart and Spurs have a free-kick, some 35 yards from goal.
  • 35'
Nani has a pop from range which takes a huge deflection and loops high over Friedel's goal. Corner to United which goes straight to...Friedel.
  • 34'
More composed kicking from De Gea under pressure once again. He's looked confident so far tonight. Of course this is a fixture that goalkeepers haven't enjoyed in recent seasons, just ask Roy Carroll or Heurelho Gomes....
  • 32'
Bale hurls a long throw into the box. Jones heads clear but only as far as Kranjcar on the edge of the box who thumps a shot straight at De Gea.
  • 30'
Rooney tries to slide in Welbeck this time but he's overhit the pass and it doesn't trouble Friedel who comes to claim.
  • 28'
Closer from United. Rooney dinks in a cheeky ball into Young in the box which takes Assou-Ekotto out of the game. Young tries to aim his header back across Friedel and into the top corner but can't get it on target.
  • 25'
United win a corner but it's poor, however they keep possession. Jones has a shot, it's blocked by Welbeck of all people but his turn and shot is also blocked.
  • 23'
And now the action zooms straight back up the other end. From a throw on the right Nani sends in a teasing cross in between the two Spurs centre-backs but Rooney can't quite get on the end of it.
  • 21'
Back come Spurs, Lennon zips down the right. His cross isn't the best but Tottenham maintain the attack. The ball comes to Bale and he shoots low, but a diving De Gea is down comfortably to claim.
  • 20'
Spurs are seeing plenty of the ball at the moment, but the hosts are looking a real threat on the break, with plenty of pace. Rooney then sends Nani into space and he crosses but is unable to find Welbeck in the box.
  • 18'
Time to go over to Greg Stobart at Old Trafford for an update: "I've just spotted Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini sitting 20 yards to my right alongside David Platt and some other suits. The Italian will be here primarily to watch Tottenham, who his side play at the weekend, but I'm sure he will also have a keen eye on potential title rivals United. On the pitch, it's been a pretty even first 15 minutes, with Spurs playing some nice possession football but the hosts looking more dangerous when they attack."
  • 16'
A surging run from Bale is ended by a fine tackle by Jones who just manages to get his toe on the ball to nick it away from the Welshman. Bale ends up in a heap but he should be OK to continue.
  • 15'
Almost a quarter of an hour gone at Old Trafford and it's fairly frantic stuff so far. Spurs, slowly improving, send a corner onto the roof of De Gea's net.
  • 13'
David de Gea sends United hearts fluttering again! He's played a backpass, has Van der Vaart chasing him down, attempts a dragback, beats the Dutchman but then goes tumbling after Van der Vaart just catches him! They get up and shake hands but he does not look too impressed.
  • 11'
Good tackle by Kaboul! United send Young scampering into space down the left but the Spurs defender comes across quickly to make the tackle and concede the throw.
  • 10'
Spurs enjoy a decent spell of possession, for possibly the first time in the match, but it's ended abruptly by Krancjar who passes the ball straight to Ashley Young.
  • 8'
GREAT SAVE FRIEDEL! Super stuff from the Spurs shot-stopper. Again United cut Spurs apart, working the ball to Cleverley who has time and space to pick his spot but is denied by the diving American who tips the ball around the post!
  • 6'
First signs of life from Spurs who try to sneak into the United box but Jonny Evans is alive to the danger and nips into make the interception.
  • 4'
The hosts continue to go forwards, attacking down the left with Anderson showing some fancy footwork to win a corner. The ball is whipped in towards Smalling but again Spurs defend well.
  • 2'
Mistake from Van der Vaart! The Dutchman plays a ball in midfield, far too casually, Rooney is onto it in a flash, swaps a couple of passes with Young, races into the box but can then only head tamely at Friedel. Upfield Van der Vaart breathes a huge sigh of relief....
  • 1'
Right we're finally ready! Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck kick-off for Manchester United and we are underway at Old Trafford! The hosts go straight on the attack, pinging a couple of crosses into the Spurs box, but the visitors survive.
  • So that's Sir Alex's view. Back now to Greg for more from Old Trafford: "Nice touch from Manchester United here ahead of their first home game of their title defence. Every United supporter has been given 'CHAMP19NS' scarves “in appreciation of the Red Army's role in last season's title win” – delivered as a gift from Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill. It should look pretty impressive when the players come out of the tunnel."
  • “We compete in the present, but at the same time build for the future, and I think it is one of the factors that has seen us stay successful for such a long time. I had every confidence in the young men who saw us through at West Brom, and I know they'll continue in that vein during the absence of our most experienced defenders.”
  • Ferguson writes: “Of course we have a young squad, and the average age will take a tumble this evening in the absence of Ferdinand and Vidic, but I have no qualms about pursuing a policy built around youth, albeit at the same time recognising the value of experience.
•’s Greg Stobart is at Old Trafford tonight, so let’s check in with him: “Here at an expectant Old Trafford, the Manchester United players are warming up wearing their new branded training gear following the announcement earlier today of a £40 million deal with DHL. The average age of the United team today must be one of their youngest ever but Sir Alex Ferguson uses his programme notes to insist he has “no qualms” about trusting youth.”
  • No Luka Modric for the visitors tonight, in fact he’s not even bothered to make the trip. According to Harry Redknapp his head is not in the same place as his body, or something like that, either way he’s out. Elsewhere, Brad Friedel makes his debut in goal while Jake Livermore and Niko Krancjar are the midfield duo.
  • Some quick team news before we get going. There’s no Vidic, Ferdinand or Rafael for the hosts so Smalling, Evans, Jones and Evra are charged with protecting De Gea. Elsewhere, Cleverley retains his place in midfield and there’s even room for Hernandez on the bench.
  • Tottenham: Friedel; Walker, Dawson, Kaboul, Assou-Ekotto; Lennon, Livermore, Kranjcar, Bale;Van der Vaart, Defoe. Subs: Gomes, Huddlestone, Jenas, Pavlyuchenko, Bassong, Corluka, Townsend.
  • Manchester Utd: De Gea; Smalling, Jones, Evans, Evra; Nani, Cleverley, Anderson, Young; Rooney, Welbeck. Subs: Lindegaard, Berbatov, Giggs, Park, Hernandez, Carrick, Fabio Da Silva.
