Live Commentary

  • Well it’s definitely been a tale of two halves at Anfield this afternoon, the hosts played majestically in the first period, with the likes of Downing and Adam impressing with every moment. However, a resurgent Sunderland got their act together in the second, picked up the pace in the early moments and got what they deserved. Seb Larsson’s goal certainly worth a point in Merseyside for the North East outfit and their fans will be going home happy. That’s all for now, so we thank-you at for joining us for this Premier League fixture and hope to see you again soon.
  • And that's it as Phil Dowd blows the whistle for full-time.
  • 90' + 3'
Cattermole wastes a chance for his side inside the final two-minutes, the midfielder launching the ball over the top of Reina’s goal.
  • 90' + 1'
Four additional minutes to be played at Anfield, but still the game’s rhythm continues to be disrupted by fouls. Liverpool look the most likely to make something happen, but Sunderland are remaining stubborn at the back.
  • 89'
The glum faces of the Anfield crowd sum Liverpool’s half up perfectly, as Kuyt has medical attention to a clash of heads.
  • 87'
Liverpool keep on trying to feed the ball through to a solitary Andy Carroll, but the Black Cats just keep on breaking them down. Lose passes from the likes of Lucas and Adam aren’t helping their chances of a winner either.
  • 84'
Liverpool are trying to breed life into these dying moments of the game as they work the ball around Sunderland’s area, but nothing comes of it and there’s a chance at the other end that is equally diminished to nothing.
  • 81'
Well both goalscorers have vacated the field now with Larsson following Suarez, leaving David Vaughan to make his Sunderland debut.
  • 80'
    SubstitutionSebastian Larsson David Vaughan
  • 79'
The eighth booking of the match falls to Seb Larsson following a handball. That’s four a piece for the two sides.
  • 78'
    Yellow Card Sebastian Larsson
  • 77'
There’s been far too many fouls during this game, especially after the break. The stop-start nature is bringing the atmosphere down on Merseyside and players such as Downing and Suarez have failed to replicate their initial performances in this game.
  • 76'
    SubstitutionLuis Suárez Raúl Meireles
  • 74'
It’s becoming somewhat of a shapeless game at Anfield. There’s a lack of rhythm that brightened the first-half so well. However, Carroll forces a corner which is taken dangerously by Adam and stirs some drama in the box, but in the end the ball is collected by Mignolet.
  • 72'
    Yellow Card Dirk Kuyt
  • 70'
Things are just failing to click for Liverpool, too many loose balls going astray and the Merseyside outfit look the total opposite to the team they were in the first 45-minutes.
  • 67'
A highly anticipated free-kick on the edge of the area is skied over the bar from Larsson. The goalscorer had a great opportunity to at least get his set-piece on target but to no avail.
  • 66'
    SubstitutionAsamoah Gyan Dong-Won Ji
  • 66'
    Yellow Card Charlie Adam
  • 65'
Liverpool look slightly shell shocked for the moment, players and fans alike. Kuyt should mix things up on his wing with his tireless work we see on a regular basis, but more needs to be done elsewhere to get themselves back in the lead.
  • 61'
    SubstitutionJordan Henderson Dirk Kuyt
  • 61'
Henderson makes way for Kuyt after a very positive debut from the former Sunderland man. The Dutchman had started every game under Dalglish until today.
  • 60'
    Yellow Card Jordan Henderson
  • 58'
Sunderland definitely have a bit of fire behind them now with that goal as they try again to break Liverpool down. The hosts will be kicking themselves now after letting a goal in following so much dominance from the Reds.
  • 57'
    Assist Ahmed El Mohamady
  • 57'
    Goal Sebastian Larsson
  • 57'
A great goal from Seb Larsson! A cross comes in from the right-side and the midfielder has dumped his marker Flanangan and pulls off an aerobatic volley to put his side back on level terms. A sublime goal.
  • 57'
    Goallll for Sunderland!!!!!
  • 55'
Meanwhile, Carroll is making the away fans nervy after a flurry of chances from Liverpool corners as well as his own interventions. Liverpool still looking dangerous despite their lowered tempo.
  • 54'
Flanagan gets caught in possession by Larsson and pops a delightful ball in for Gyan who heads towards Reina, but there’s no power in the effort and the ‘keeper collects easily. Definitely a half-chance there for Sunderland.
  • 51'
Sunderland are definitely trying to up the tempo at Anfield and are getting through the Liverpool area, forcing Reina to do some work. But the Spaniard is on top of it.
  • 48'
Charlie Adam also whips in a shot from range and goes closer than the former Manchester United man. Both sides testing the water in these early moments of the second period.
  • 46'
An early shout for handball against Wes Brown in the box, but Phil Dowd thinks nothing of it. And the referee was right after viewing a replay as the ball struck off the defender’s leg to his arm unintentionally. Meanwhile at the other end Richardson is unlucky not to get a powerful effort on target.
  • 45'
And Liverpool get the game back underway.
  • Kenny’ s men have ruled the half and done exactly what was expected of them, to dominate the game. Suarez did well to come back from missing his spot-kick and the rest of the team has shone, especially the many debutants in red. Sunderland meanwhile, need to take their tempo to the next level, they’ve lost urgency as the half as has progressed and will look to change things after the break. See you 15 minutes.
  • And that’s half-time and very much Liverpool on top.
  • 45' + 2'
    Yellow Card Phil Bardsley
  • 45'
    Yellow Card Jamie Carragher
  • 45'
There looks to be a slight injury break here as Carragher chops down Gyan. A late challenge going in on the striker’s calf leaves the Sunderland man needing treatment and the Liverpool man with a yellow card.
  • 43'
Larsson whips in a superb free-kick from the right that causes Reina to rush off his line and anything could have happened there as two Sunderland attackers were honing in on the ball, but goes through the ‘keeper and the forwards to the Spaniard’s happiness.
  • 40'
The visitors seem to be slowly getting back into the game and are hovering the ball around the Liverpool box, but their opponents aren’t having any of it and the ball is just as soon up field near their own area.
  • 37'
Sunderland are getting no say in this game whatsoever now, as Liverpool hold the ball to their heart’s content. The hosts are pressing all the time and there’ll be no surprises if Kenny’s men double their lead by the break.
  • 35'
Downing hits the bar!! The winger sprints in from the right, finds some space in-between the Sunderland defence and lashes a left-foot effort straight for goal, but has to settle for smashing the woodwork. Incredible play from the attacker.
  • 32'
It’s a good atmosphere at Anfield, every Liverpool fan seems fired up for this new season and so they should. The side has great prospects for the campaign and should be able to challenge for the heights of Europe once more.
  • 28'
After Cattermole gets booked after a needless challenge on Suarez, Liverpool have a corner. However, the Reds cannot make this chance worth their while, but look to be able to strike at any time right now.
  • 27'
    Yellow Card Lee Cattermole
  • 26'
Sunderland have given themselves a couple of chances in the last few moments, but there doesn’t seem to be any real conviction behind the final product. Steve Bruce will be wondering when his attackers will start getting shots on target.
  • 23'
Adam strikes from distance at the Belgian shot-stopper and it’s struck with massive power, forcing Mignolet to reach at the top of his net to stop it.
  • 21'
Goal disallowed for Liverpool. Carrol receives the ball from a great ball into the area, the striker gets the slightest of touches on Ferdinand and follows it up with a great strike past the Sunderland ‘keeper. However, the touch on the defender was ruled unfair, a very light judgement.
  • 18'
Young Flanagan is doing well on the right-side for Dalglish’s side, the full-back knows how to put in a challenge and also how to play it out the back. Looking as good as he was at the end of last season.
  • 15'
Liverpool are doing well to break Sunderland down as Steve Bruce’s side look for an opening. The hosts look strong in midfield and are bossing possession at the moment.
  • 12'
    Assist Charlie Adam
  • 12'
    Goal Luis Suárez
  • 12'
A free-kick is whipped in low by Adam and Suarez gets the slightest of touches off his head to put the ball past Mignolet. The Uruguayan needed that confidence boost following his penalty miss and he did well to keep positive and get Liverpool a goal.
  • 12'
    Goal for Liverpool!!!!!
  • 11'
Henderson almost knicks in a header at the front post. The ball comes across to the left side of the visitor’s area, Downing pops in a low cross, but the former Black Cat can’t make the chance pay.
  • 10'
Well it’s a high octane opening ten minutes at Anfield, with the game far from calm. Suarez’s penalty miss has kept Sunderland on their toes whilst they look to take advantage of still being on a level plain.
  • 7'
    Penalty save Simon Mignolet
  • 7'
    Missed Penalty Luis Suárez
  • 7'
