Ligue 1 leaders Lille have dethroned defending Coupe de France champions Paris Saint-Germain with a 1-0 victory in the final at the Stade de France.

Substitute Ludovic Obraniak's outrageous 89th minute free kick sealed the victory late on for LOSC, who also had a penalty saved by Gregory Coupet seconds after.

Lille came into the final with hopes that a cup win would be the first step towards a domestic double, given that they also sit four points clear at the top of Ligue 1 with three games remaining. Meanwhile, PSG were hoping to defend the title that they won last year after an extra time victory over Monaco.

The first half was a tense and cagey affair, with both teams committing numerous errors during play. Moussa Sow fired the best chance of the opening period over the bar from 20 yards out following a quick counter attack by Lille.

Within three minutes of the restart, PSG midfielder Claude Makelele had to be substituted following an injury sustained during a challenge. Depending on the severity of the knock, that may have been Makelele’s last appearance as a professional footballer as he has already expressed his desire to retire at the end of the season.

The second half continued in much the same way as the first, with both teams sorely lacking an end product to their attack. Moussa Sow, who had a disappointing game, was replaced by Obraniak on 79 minutes.

But with extra time lurking in the Coupe de France final for a second successive season, substitute Obraniak converted a stunning free kick in the 89th minute from near the right corner flag after Mathieu Debuchy had gone down under a hard challenge. PSG keeper Gregory Coupet could only watch as the ball bounced off the woodwork and flew into the far corner.

If Coupet was questionable for the first goal, then he was definitely at fault seconds after the restart, when he rushed off his goal line to bring down Gervinho, who had broken clear of PSG’s offside trap. The referee pointed to the spot with little hesitation.

However, Coupet made amends as he handed PSG a lifeline when he saved Debuchy’s penalty as the clock moved into added time.

But there was to be no miracle for PSG, who could not muster anything in the minutes that remained, as Lille claimed the Coupe de France for the sixth time and in the process, ended their 56-year trophy drought.
