Two of the favourites for the Clausura title battled in Buenos Aires on Sunday in a heated contest littered with physical play, hard fouls and yellow cards.

However, there was only one goal.

Hernan Lopez, who scored three goals midweek against Guaraní, scored the lone goal with a gorgeous chip from outside the box to seal it late.

In the 84th minute, the Uruguayan used his right foot to cleverly place the ball into the left side of the goal, stunning the Racing fans.

For most of the game, it did not look like either team would take more than a point.

Racing were able to move the ball forward in the early going but failed to create much of anything.

Gabriel Hauche had one of the side's best opportunities in the first half 19 minutes in off a beautiful pass from Pablo Luguercio. The forward gained possession of the ball as he was darting towards the right of the box, receiving it from a lofted through ball. Hauche struck the ball on his first touch, hoping to make the keeper work but was not able to. The shot flew into the stands off a tough angle.

Not much could be seen from Estudiantes either in the initial part of the contest. Hoping to bounce back after a loss to Godoy Cruz last week, the visitors were counting on the magic of Juan Sebastian Veron to provide the team with chances to score.

Each side sent in several dangerous balls off set pieces and in play, but neither club could take advantage of the chances. Veron's creativity and dangerous passing was on display for spurts of the first half, playing many of the dangerous balls that his forwards could not put away.

In the second half, it appeared that La Academia had struck the first blow.

Colombian forward Teofilo Gutierrez put the ball in the net 15 minutes into the second half but was in an offside position, much to the dismay to the Racing faithful that charged the atmosphere of Avellaneda with chants for their beloved team.

In goal for Racing, Jorge Alberto De Olivera was sound for 83 minutes before letting it slip. He was not tested much, but made the routine saves needed. However, on the goal, he was caught a little too far out of his zone, allowing Lopez the chance to score.

Lopez took it, and his club took three points.

With the victory, Estudiantes now sit on top of the table with Racing at 12 points.
