    Bartosz Bialkowski

Normally an understudy for regular Kelvin Davis but the former Polish under 21 goalkeeper didn't let anyone down on the night as he dealt with everything comfortably and could do little about either goals.

  • Dan Harding

    Dan Harding

Had a first half goal disallowed after straying offside before firing home. Defensively he was solid though his failure to challenge Obertan for the goal proved costly.

    Jose Rocha Fonte

Southampton's captain was composed in possession and also in his defending as he marshalled his back four well though he was badly caught out by Hernandez for the winner.

  • Danny Butterfield

    Danny Butterfield

He was never likely to emulate his third round heroics of the previous year when he scored an unlikely hat trick for Crystal Palace but he was comfortable in his work, defending well against United's forward.

  • Daniel Seaborne

    Daniel Seaborne

Solid in his work alongside his captain at the heart of the Southampton defence though they were not overly tested on an off-night for the United attack.

  • Morgan Schneiderlin

    3.00

    Morgan Schneiderlin

He was a composed figure in the Southampton central midfield as he sat deep and kept his team ticking over, though he struggled to cope once Scholes and Giggs began to work together in the second half.

  • Guilherme Do Prado

    Guilherme Do Prado

The Brazilian recently turned his loan move from Italian club Cesena into a permanent one and he caught the eye with several lung busting runs but he was wasteful in possession and often miscued routine passes to his team-mates.

  • Alex DO NOT USE Chamberlain

    Alex DO NOT USE Chamberlain

With all the talk about potential moves to the Premier League this was a real opportunity for the 17-year old to show his skills against the very best. If this was an audition to show what he was about he stepped up to the mark, with a lively display which showed his pace and ability to run at players but also his footballing brain as he displayed good movement and a good passing range. Impressive.

  • Richard Chaplow
    23
    11
    3.50

    Richard Chaplow

The central midfielder gave an energetic and committed performance which was capped by his sumptuous first half striker which gave the home team the lead. But his influence waned as the United midfield took hold in the second half.

  • Rickie Lambert
    9
    11
    3.00

    Rickie Lambert

The striker was alway going to be Southampton's main threat and he fired a couple of early long-range efforts wide. After that he found himself starved of service and was unable to make any impression on the game.

  • Lee Barnard
    7
    15
    2.50

    Lee Barnard

The ex-Tottenham striker struggled as he was wasteful in possession and made little impact against the solid pairing of Evans and Smalling. Substituted in the second half for Dickson.

Ryan Dickson Flop of the Match

Substituted for Barnard in the second half with devastating results as his wayward pass gifted Giggs the ball in the Southampton half from which he set up Hernandez to score.

  • Oscar Gobern

    Oscar Gobern

Introduced for Chaplow in the 84th minute but made little difference.

    Dany N'Guessan

Brought on late for Guly but made little impact.

  • Anders Lindegaard

    Anders Lindegaard

A solid first Manchester United start from the Danish international who could do nothing about Chaplow's thunderous striker but otherwise dealt comfortably with everything the home side threw at him.

  • John O'Shea
    135
    32
    3.50

    John O'Shea

United's captain for the evening was as solid as ever and was the standout performer in an inexperienced backline. Rarely troubled down the right flank, and dealt with the threat of Chamberlain well.

  • Chris Smalling
    128
    30
    3.00

    Chris Smalling

Continues to progress following his move from Fulham and looked comfortable dealing with the big Southampton strikers. Perhaps could have tracked Chaplow better for the goal but otherwise looked solid.

  • Jonny Evans
    116
    44
    3.00

    Jonny Evans

The more experienced of United's centre back pairing but the Northern Ireland international looked the weaker of the two. Reacted slowly on Chaplow's goal but settled as the game went on.

  • Fabio Da Silva
    153
    20
    3.00

    Fabio Da Silva

Much like his twin brother Rafael, the Brazilian looked eager to attack down the left though he cut inside onto his right foot too often which negated his threat. Defensively looked less secure, as the goal ultimately began down his side. Substituted for Brown at half time after an injury.

  • Anderson
    97
    60
    2.50

    Anderson

Failed to stamp his authority on the game as Southampton closed him quickly and refused him time on the ball which he so often craves. A frustrating evening for the Brazilian who was subbed midway through the second half for Nani.

  • Paul Scholes
    194
    23
    3.50

    Paul Scholes

Once against showed real moments of quality on the ball as his trusty radar once again saw most of his passes reach their targets as he pulled the strings from his customary holding midfield role and took control of proceedings in a dominant second half display.

  • Darron Gibson
    97
    120
    2.50

    Darron Gibson

A big disappointment in central midfield where he was often wasteful in possession and unable to deal with the Southampton trio. A night to forget for the Irishman who was substituted for Giggs in the second half.

  • Gabriel Obertan
    122
    50
    3.00

    Gabriel Obertan

The Frenchman tends to blow hot and cold and this was certainly one of his quieter displays though he still managed to make a decisive impact as he beat Harding to set up Owen for the equaliser.

  • Michael Owen
    337
    40
    3.50

Michael Owen Top of the Match

Operated in a deeper role than normal and he linked the play well and showed his predatory instincts were still intact with a typically well judged header from close range. He certainly has given Ferguson food for thought.

  • Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
    355
    17
    3.50

    Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez

Scored the decisive goal with a typically accomplished finish which has been the hallmark of his early days at United. He was starved of service for much of the game, but still troubled the Southampton defence with his pace and movement.

Substitutions

  • Wes Brown
    127
    25
    3.00

    Wes Brown

Introduced at half time for Fabio and he gave a solid second half performance at right back.

  • Nani
    229
    21
    3.50

    Nani

Along with Giggs he helped United turn around a deficit into a victory as his pace, trickery and energy posed the home defence plenty of problems late into the second half.

  • Ryan Giggs
    318
    14
    3.50

    Ryan Giggs

Changed the game when he came on in the second half. Immediately made United far more incisive in possession and showed glimpses of his dribbling ability by taking on players frequently. At 37 he is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down yet.
