Germany 3-0 Turkey: Klose Nets Brace As Hosts Earn Comfortable Victory

Die Mannschaft continued their perfect qualifying campaign with a 3-0 victory over Turkey in Berlin.

Germany earned a vital three points 'away' to Turkey in Berlin. More than 30,000 Turkey fans were expected to turn out for the match, and judging by the number of stars and crescents in the stands, as well as the jeers directed at Mesut Oezil, that estimate was matched.

The Germans took a deserved lead before half-time through Miroslav Klose, who continued his impressive goal-scoring form for his country. The Turks had a chance to earn a point until late, when Oezil put the game out of reach with a cool finish. Three minutes from time, Klose completed his brace, and in doing so, moved to within 11 goals of Gerd Mueller's record of 68 strikes in a German shirt.

While Turkey held their hosts to only a few chances in the first half, Klose's opener was a long time coming. Oezil forced a fine save early, and Sami Khedira later stung Volkan Demirel's hands with a good effort. The Germans were completely dominant in midfield, but to be fair to Turkey, they suffered a setback in the first half when Mehmet Aurelio was forced off with what appeared to be a thigh strain. In the 43rd minute, Klose put the hosts on top after Thomas Mueller's looping header was saved by Demirel and the Bayern Munich man was in perfect position to tap in the rebound.

After the break, Halil Altintop had a good chance to draw level, but Manuel Neuer made a brilliant block to deny the striker. Later, Lukas Podolski missed an open goal after being teed up by Oezil, before the latter made a fine finish from Philipp Lahm's through ball. Three minutes from full time, Demirel cleared the ball off Klose's chest, and the Bayern Munich man made the score 3-0.

The result leaves Germany atop Group A with a perfect nine points from three matches. Turkey are now three points behind the leaders, and are now level on points with Austria.
