Juventus' season went from bad to worse following a shock home defeat at the hands of a ruthless Bologna outfit.

During a low key opening period, the Bianconeri enjoyed most of the possession despite failing to put the visitor’s goal under pressure on regular occasion. Vincenzo Iaquinta carved out the best scoring chance on the stroke of halftime, but had the post to blame for failing to break the deadlock.

The visitors took a surprise lead seconds after the re-start when Marco Di Vaio slotted home after having broken through on the counter attack. Juventus looked to react and were again frustrated as Matteo Rubin cleared Leonardo Bonucci’s effort off the line. Di Vaio then punished the Bianconeri for their sloppy finishing by skipping past two markers and burying the ball in the back of the net for his second of the night.

Luca Toni saw an effort cleared off the line in the dying seconds and it summed up Juventus’ night as they lost further ground on the race for fourth. Bologna moved to within five points of almost certain survival and celebrated their first away win over the Old Lady since the 1980-81 season.

The game started slowly with the Bianconeri failing to take the initiative going forward despite the importance of the encounter.

Juventus lacked any spark going forward but Alessandro Matri served fellow hitman Iaquinta with an inviting through pass shortly after the half hour mark. The Italian did well to break in to the visitor’s box but was quickly closed down as he looked to pull the trigger.

The Old Lady enjoyed the best of the possession early on but Alberto Malesani’s side remained extremely organised without taking risks at the back.

Luigi Del Neri’s outfit felt they deserved the lead when Iaquinta smashed a close range effort onto the post on the stroke of halftime. Emiliano Viviano looked well beaten but thanked the woodwork for keeping his clean sheet in tact.

Bologna came out flying after the re-start and took the lead after just three minutes when Di Vaio lofted the ball over a stranded Marco Storari. The former Juventus hitman had two defenders bearing down but took his chance exceptionally to stun the home side.

Juventus looked to bounce back from the setback and Alessandro Del Piero lofted a very interesting ball towards the back post on 55 minutes. Matri looked to stab it home for the leveller, but the hitman couldn’t make his mark following some close marking from Rubin.

The home side again went desperately close when Bonucci stabbed a shot from close range at the back post following Del Piero’s free kick. Once again Rubin was on hand to pull off a vital goal line clearance.

Seconds later the game tipped even further into the hands of the visitors as Di Vaio slotted in his second of the night. The veteran displayed wonderful technique to dribble the ball through traffic inside the box and his finish left Storari with little chance at the near post.
